I just read Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs. Hilarious as you can imagine from that man. Bruce was mentioned, but only in the section of unitelligible lyrics, and Blinded By the Light's chorus was in question.

But it got me thinking...
what are the truly bad songs you know?
The ones that make your cringe when you hear them...
now this could be a dangerous thread, as Mr. Barry (my literary hero) points out, your highest memory function serves to remember lyrics of songs you hate. And it would seem a lot of people hate a lot of the same songs.
Also, I want to say, everyone has an opinion, and a lot of times opinions clash, so don't take it personally. Everyone has their own musical taste. As Mr Barry points, there's a small, concentrated population who think MacArthur Park is the best song ever. We hope they find the help they need...

Here's some rules, based totally on dave barry's theories on bad songs-
Provide some reason... like "MacArthur Park was about a friggin CAKE!!! A CAKE!!!! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, A CAKE. WHO CARES"
It has to be at least 5 years old, as Dave Barry decided
a song must be hated for at least 5 years for it to stick in peoples mind and cause raging anger. "If I ever heard MacArthur Park on the radio, I swear to God i will drive to that radio station and then drive THROUGH that radio station, and then smack that DJ upside the head with a tire iron"

I'll get things started...
(drum roll)
MacArthur Park... it's about a FRIGGIN CAKE!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!

Ah so many many. Off the top of my head...In the year 2525 by Zager and Evans(?) The ultimate "feel good" song.I can't stand the guy's ominous voice crawling through years until I'm depicted as a head in a box with a machine doing everything for me. "In the year 2525 if man is still alive, if women can survive" I thank God for two things...one that lovely duet didn't last into the year 1985 and that I'll be dead when 2525 comes along. Thanks for freakin me out thinking about it.~Annie

ACK! Feelings..have to go with SugarPie on that one, Double YUCK! :P

Afternoon Delight....another ear splitting, nauseating song.

Anything by the Steve Miller Band. He was popular in the 70's and I would cringe anytime I heard one of his songs. We were driving down the road the other day listening to the local classic rock station when his song about the "big old jet airliner" came on. I made some type of sound that showed my disgust and Douger tried to tell me that it wasn't that bad. So, I told him to listen to the intelligent lyrics of the song and proceeded to sing to him. Keep in mind that I can't sing a lick, and coupled with the lyrics that go something like this " Big Old Jet airliner, don't come and take me away, Big old jet airliner, it's here that I have to stay" Douger had to agree that it's not exactly Rock and Roll Hall of Fame material.

And as much as I love Bruce, I have to say that Mary Queen of Arkansas just sucks..I hate it.

Good thread Zephyrs. :)

My friend Dave told me about an afternoon he spent arguing with a friend about the worst song ever recorded. Finally they had to split it into two catagories: Original songs and cover songs. The reason was they could not decide between Afternoon Delight and the Michael Bolton version of When A Man Loves A Woman. ;)

God, there are so many to choose from, but off the top of my head I have to go with these two:

"Justify My Love"-Madonna. Just absolutely horrible!!!! I STILL don't understand what the hell she's saying most of the time, and the video was horrendous as well!!

"Aqualung"-Jethro Tull. Sorry, Beth, I know your brothers love Tull, but this song has got to go!! What the hell is he talking about??? I cringe everytime it comes on the radio.

The five-year requirement knocks out a lot!

Is a bad song something you might have liked the first 627 times you heard it (example DMB-Ants Marching or Tom Petty's Last Dance with Mary Jane) that now you're so sick of that you scream, "I can't believe I actually liked this song once!" Or is a bad song that's filler on an album from an artist you love (example Bruce's own Pony Boy)? Can it also be something that is just so horrible that you wonder why they wasted the vinyl, audio tape, or the electronics to press a CD (anything by Chicago since 1980, Kenny G, or Michael Bolton). I'm still convinced that Michael Bolton, Kenny G, and Yanni are all the same guy.

Steve Miller's songs fall in a totally seperate category of awful. He must have written "Take The Money And Run" while drunk. Nobody can rhyme the words he did while sober in that song. Homer Simpson sang parts of "The Joker" better than Steve himself!

While this isn't exactly a bad song, it's funny nonetheless. A friend of mine knows people through her company that get free tickets to Walnut Creek. They're usually not the best shows. Last year she was able to go see Peter, Paul, and Mary. She was shocked to discover that "Puff The Magic Dragon" is not necessarily a cute little children's song ;). She was also told that "White Rabbit" isn't about Alice In Wonderland.

Two groups that I do profess to like are early Duran Duran (hey I was 12 when Rio came out) and Van Halen (Sammy Hagar version although 1984 is not half bad), but there are no two worse lyricists than David Lee Roth and Simon LeBon.

Listening to the lyrics of "Jump" are absolutely classic. I like the song, but what does it actually say. "I get up and nothing gets me down...". Panama is a little iffy as well.

Also, the classic lines from "Hungry Like the Wolf" "I smell like I sound" and from "Rio" "cherry ice cream smile, well I suppose it's very nice" are not exactly going to get Simon very far in a writing contest. "Save a prayer" maybe.

But, one of the songs that I cringe at most is "Luka" by Suzanne Vega. After the opening line it is all down hill. What a happy bouncy tune about child abuse.

Honorable mentions have to go to Edie Brickel "the what I am song" and to Lisa Loeb for her little dittie from the early 90s.

I am sure I will come up with more if I think about.

Oh, and to Paulie, my future husband, I will forgive for the Aqualung comment. I will keep it quiet from your future brothers-in-law. :)

Oooh that Smell (title?) - Lynard Skynard

Lady Marmalade (current version)
Undercover Angel (a rare gem, but pretty bad)

Wow!! I'm so glad people are enjoying this thread...
By the way, the book mentions MANY of these songs, with classic quips to add to them (good golly I sound like Dave Barry's PR man!!!)

And one thing that he says about Steve Miller, Take the Money and Run, is that he rhymes Texas, facts is, justice and taxes... but he forgives him for any bad lyrics he wrote just because he will have people trying to figure out what a pompatus is for the rest of time.

As for reptition, I'd say that you might want to have a reason beyond it was killed horribly. But let's keep in mind, that if you've heard them more than once, someone out there has to like it!

Oh Paulie, you have offended me deeply. Aqualung is one of the best rock and roll songs ever! Oh well, we all have our opinions now, don't we? ;) Better watch it around those brother-in-laws. Tull fans are almost as bad as Bruce fans.

Those are some good (bad?) choices so far. I agree with Zephyrs, who the hell writes a song about a cake left out in the rain??? But it does have a good beat and you can dance to it. ;)

How about another 70s "classic": "Eres Tu"...or, as I thought is was pronounced for many a-year, "There Is Stew".

Also, if we can nominate remakes, I just heard the new version of the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" and it is horrible!!! And of course, there's always Madonna's destruction of the magnificent "American Pie." (Yeah, I know, I'm violating the five-year rule, but I can't help myself)

Beth's post reminded me of another Suzanne Vega classic--"Tom's Diner". What in the world was that?

"Hot For Teacher" was one that proved David Lee Roth's literary genius . "I don't feel tardy"--WHAT???

I'm not sure if this is five years old yet or not, but what about the ever charming "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia?

We also have to include the Sophie B. Hawkins fave--"Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover".

As for "Safety Dance". Where in the world did they get the idea for that title? Was a defensive lineman celebrating a tackle in the opponent's end zone or something? I'm just glad they never came out with something called Field Goal Dance.

We also seem to be forgetting Salt n' Pepa--"Push It" The one that sounds almost like they're singing "ah this is bull****" That's actually the truth.

Regardless of what anyone says--Achy Breaky Heart SUCKED!

I didn't know we coul;d nominate a whole artists catalog. I vote for anything by George Thurogood. I hate his voice and I hate his songs. Frankly I don't like anything about him!!

I saw Bo Donaldson and the Haywoods at my very first concert in 1975. They opened for the Osmonds and I have to say I liked "Billie Don't be a Hero"

As for the Tull. There's this song they play on my radio station all the time. I don't know the name of it but it's about a "Fat Man". I can't stand it, I cringe evertime I hear it.

How about "Radio Ga-Ga" by Queen. I love Queen but that song is BAD!!

"We Built this City on Rock and Roll" by Starship

"Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFarin

"All By Myself"

"Sussudio" By Phil Collins ( I've never figured that one out, is it someone's name?)

Okay, with a few exceptions I LOVE most of the songs mentioned here, lyrics and all. What can I say? I'm a freak! I'm one of the few musical garbage cans remaining in the free world. I can listen to "Afternoon Delight" (I even know all the words) and the new D12 CD in the same sitting! (BTW have any of you heard the new D12? I recommend "It Ain't Nothin' But Music" and "Purple Pills")

Most of the great 70's gems noted in this fabulous thread can be found on one of my all-time favorite CD series entitled "Super Hits Of The 70's- Have A Nice Day" by Rhino Records. (Thank God for Rhino! The K-Tel of the last 15 years)

BTW Incident, you mis-quoted a great tune. The correct lyric to "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" is:

"And as he started to go
She said 'Billy keep your head low!
Billy, don't be a hero
Come back to me.'"

In order to trash the song, you must have the lyric right! ;)

What an awesome tune!

Of course I can not think of one bad song right now. Although anytime a Steve Miller or Eagles song comes on I flip it immediately.
KC and the Sunshine Band was really horrible although I forget which song they sang which was a big hit.
My 12 year old cousin visited me this week and I was forced to listen to pop music while she was here. There were many songs that I was desparately wanting to flip.
"get your freak on" ???? I think it is by Missy Elliot and what kind of song is Bootylicious?????? I think by Destiny's Child. The beginning has Stevie Nix's Edge of Seventeen guitar.

Well, if we're going back to the "Billy Don't Be a Hero" etc. era, how about "That's the Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" or "Little Willie," with these profound lyrics: "Little Willie Willie won't go home, no you can't get Willie [forgotten word] Willie won't go. Tried telling everybody but oh no. Little Willie Willie won't go home." (In typing those lyrics, it has just occurred to me that perhaps "Little Willie" didn't refer to an entire person, but merely a body part. Now I am truly frightened.)

I have to admit that as a kid I absolutely loved most of the songs from this era that have been mentioned and for the nostalgia factor alone, probably wouldn't turn the dial if I heard any of them. My pathetic defense is I was only about 10 when these were hits and I didn't come out of the womb with a highly developed rock & roll sensibility a la Dari.

Zephyrs,

I haven't read the book, but now I'm curious so I'll probably pick it up. Have we hit most of Dave's choices? Maybe it's a generational thing. Seems like songs from specific eras are popping up a lot.

Annie,

I'd say the odds are about 1 in a billion. Perhaps we need to start a famous relatives list to prevent future insults! I have no famous relatives, but my late mother worked with lots of famous types and had a particular fondness for Liberace. So out of respect for her, I ask others to refrain from making fun of him. (I'm kidding -- if you've ever been to the Liberace Museum in Vegas, you can't help but howl with laughter. Does anyone remember that song by, um, you know, that group with the singer who has the shaggy blonde hair and the guitarist who, I think, played a double guitar...you know who I'm talking about...they sing "Surrender"...oh, what are their friggin' names?!?!?!? Anyway, they sing that other song... "The Logical Song" or maybe it's the "Illogical" song? I can't remember that either. (Geez....can I get ANY part of this right??????) Anyway, this "Logical Song", oh how it irks me! There is something so disturbing about shaggy blond haired guy's voice in that song and it is immediately turned off when those first few piano notes are heard....Cheap Trick!!! Oh, I knew it'd come to me if I kept writing :)

This guy sucks, and I have a reason to hate him (non musically also.)

I worked for Christie Whitman in 1993. After her election win, I was working for Inaugural Committee '94 which was given the task of putting together an event in Atlantic City. We did come up with a great event showcasing New Jersey's cultural things. It was called New Jersey-One Family. To top off the day, we got Barry Manilow to play a concert at the Convention Center. As part of the contract, we had to sell tickets to the "Fan Club" members.

So, we all trekked to Atlantic City for the Saturday events. I think it was about 10 degrees that day too. The Giants were playing the 49ers in a playoff game that day and got beat 49-3. The event is running smoothly. I'm in front of the TV watching the game with several NJ Assemblymen when I get a tap on my shoulder. Two hours before the Barry concert, he cancels! Not because he's sick or couldn't make it in. He's in his free room, paid for by us! "He just realized it's a political event, and he doesn't play political events." We only told him 69 times what it was for.

One hour before showtime all the Whitman people are sitting in front of a window of the Convention Center looking out at the throng of Barry Manilow fans waiting to see the show. As soon as the show is announced as cancelled, the crowd gets as violent as Barry Manilow fans could get. These middle aged women start banging on the glass where all of us are sitting. I still have a picture--IT IS HILARIOUS!

To top it all off, Donald Trump was there. Paul Anka was scheduled to play one of his places that evening. Well, a deal was worked out that Anka would sub for Manilow. That didn't satisfy the Manilow brigade still outside the Convention Center. As part of the staff, I had to sit through the Paul Anka show. Sucked isn't strong enough. I'd rather live in a house with a constant smell of spoiled milk than ever have to sit through a Paul Anka concert again!

Come Monday, (not to mention the actual inaugural was Tuesday) we were taking calls from all the "Fan Club" members who wanted refunds. (They were definitely entitled). The stories were so funny, some of us had to transfer calls to others because we'd go into cardiac arrest listening to these "fans". One woman came up from NORTH CAROLINA and gave the blow by blow detail of the trip! Another came from OHIO! (Yeah, we'll do that for Bruce, but it's BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN singing Sandy, not Barry Manilow singing Mandy!)

The Trentonian newspaper gave the "Geek of the Week" award to Barry Manilow, and Donald Trump banned him from Atlantic City for some time.

I like a few of the songs others have mentioned, including "Tom's Diner" (bum ba ba-da bum ba ba-da bum ba ba-da ba-da ba-da) and silly mid-80's dance tunes.

I'll second the following:
Willie and Julio's "to all the girls I've loved before," I mean, the thought of "loving" either one of them, but especially Willie...
Edie Brickel "what I am is what I am, are you what you are, or what?" (I'll admit that sounds like something I might post on the internet after a few beers, but at least no one has to hear me SING it)
"YMCA" and the way you are obligated to get out on the dance floor and make stupid arm movements whenever it is played

And how about "tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree?" To add insult to injury, we had to sing that in 4th grade music class.

My ultimate, all-time, make-me-puke song is "from a distance" - you just couldn't escape that one around the time of the Persian Gulf war. What's with the "from a distance" refrain? Lots of nasty stuff looks OK from a distance, was that the point? I hope you'll pardon the intrusion of politics into a "fun" thread, but I think the reason God was watching us from a distance was that he couldn't stand to see what was going on from up close. Either that or he didn't want to get close enough to hear that song day and night. Yecch, ugh, phooey!

Mr. YA has been revisiting the music of his youth lately, which means I have been subjected to the Steve Miller Band. However, it seems somewhere around the time I acquired my 30th or 40th Bruce boot, I gave up my right to say anything to anyone about anything, so I can't say anything about it. ;)

I gotta disagree with Basketball Jones being on this thread, only because it was SUPPOSED to be a funny, nonsense song, and it worked perfectly with the comedy routine in which it lay.
Also, if you get a chance, check out the musicians on that song...Billy Preston, Carole King, Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Al Kooper...I think even George Harrison himself, but I'm not sure at this point...too long ago. The song actually has a great long jam at the end, which never got played on the radio. To me, it's one of the hidden treasures in rock and roll.

manfred mann "Blinded By the Light"

could that suck any more, possibly? could you ruin a good song written by an awesome guy any more??????
(i rank American Pie as a not good song, so Madonna, one of my arch nemeses, doing that song makes it terrible, but still, Manfred Mann doing a bruce tune (and people KNOWING THAT VERSION instead of bruces) makes me want to beat the DJ playing that tune with a 2 x 4 until he apologizes to the free world.)

Also ever notice how the bulk of the songs on classic rock stations are 95% drivel? I think just because a song is 25 years old, does not make it classic.

Vh-1 gave us some more ammo last night with the whats my 20? list on "power ballads" those shameless obligatory ballads released by every '80's hairband. The worst one (I only saw about 5 of them) being "Every Rose has its thorn" by Poison.

More from Barry, with some personal history. "Weekend in New England" was a song my first real girlfriend used to tell me made her think of me. Another one that became one of our romantic songs was Leo Sayre's "When I need You". When she ended our relationship I was truly heartbroken and could not understand why it had to end. When I look at these cheesey songs now, maybe that is a sign that it was the right thing after all!

Cath C - it was either Mary or Maureen McGregor that was ...."feeling like a fool".

NashCat - I love the Moody Blues but you are right - that song was overplayed and they had many much better songs.

YA - I agree with you about from a distance, and I will add to that (at some political risk) Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American". That song made me sick to hear it because of the way people used it. Enough said, I am proud to be an American, but I cannot stand that song.

Be careful, it was in the news just a couple of days ago that Bill Veeck Jr. just apologized to KC for disco demolition night. In 1979, Steve Dahl (a Chicago DJ) hosted
a promotion between games of a White Sox doubleheader where they exploded a stack of disco records on the field.

Pre-game promotion resulted in a sellout crowd and about 10,000 people who couldn't get in. People stormed the field after they blew up the records and it got out of hand. They had to postpone the second game and the field was a mess for the rest of the season. I guess you could say there was a strong anti-disco sentiment at the time.

Speaking of disco, I don't think anyone has mentioned "Disco Duck" by LA DJ Rick Dees.

My goodness ... how can we forget that wonderful one-hit wonder "Mickey" by the overgrown cheerleader (Toni Basil):

"Oh Mickey, you're so fine you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey"

PUKE!

Please ... I'd rather NOT know if anyone on this board likes that one!

In addition to that ... how about another stomach turner ... Rico Suave by Gerardo ...

"There's not a woman that can handle a man like me
That's why I juggle two or three"

IMHO ... he deserves a drop kick ... Rico ... Rico Suave.

Reunited by Peaches & Herb (I think that's who did it)- becuase it's so cheesy - YUCK!

and

YMCA - I can't stand this song but I find myself singing along on occassion when its played after having indulged in colored liquids

There is also Me & Mrs Jones - does anybody remember that one? It about a guy having an affair -

I forgot two of my all time favorites-
Red Rubber Ball by who knows and who cares? That song is pretty darned dumb.

And also

An all time favorite "Horse With No Name"
Why doesn't the horse have a name? Seriously. (that's not even mentioning what is mentioned in the book, about how if it's taking place in a desert with nothing going on, why doesn't the guy just NAME the friggin horse!?)

Hey RMO I love that song mostly after seeing it performed live a few times. But I gotta admit the lyrics are cheesy and they did play it a few times on the radio, just a few...

I just saw Tim McGraw live last weekend when he opened his show with the Elton John song "Tiny Dancer" from out in the crowd. He walked right past me when he went back to the stage after that song. BTW, before Tim's show started I heard Hungry Heart blasting out the speakers. Also during the concert I saw Tim wearing a Bruce T-shirt at times on the big screen behind his performance. Very cool concert IMHO.

Now tell me that isn't a song that goes around and around in your head.

Toots, you've just gone to far now!!! ;)

Last February, while out in L.A. for BAT II we made a trip to Disneyland, and was compelled by Paulie and All that Heaven will Allow to go on that ride. (I will not speak its name) I had to listen to several thousand hours of Bruce Boots to get that #$%&#^^$ song out of my head which I finally managed to do some time in late June.

Well listening to Bruce is not a bad thing but Toots posting that song was just Pure Evil.

I guess everyone has run the gamit, but i gotta believe ANYTHING sung by the Bee Gees is just pure evil! I couldn't stand the "stayin' alive" album and still can't. I think there were about 10 hits off of that album and they all sucked! What the hell were we thinking? Take care, douger.

Okay Incident I'm really really sorry! I had a bad day, I've had this headache that won't go away from allergies and I just couldn't help myself. I hate that ride that shall remain nameless myself, though I have to admit if you go on it during the Christmas season it's not nearly as irritating. If it makes you feel any better I've got the stupid song running around my head now. No evil intended.

I know Toots and Douger (note that Twinkle Tootser never even owns up to be married to Dirty Douger) - TRUST ME EVERYONE - THEY ARE PRETTY WEIRD.................(but lovable!!!)

Every time I've been with them - well, truth be told, they listen to Grand Funk Railroad & Barry Manilow (you really need to see Douger dance in his Maid's outfit to "Copacabana" - VERY SPECIAL INDEED - ACK!!!!!!)

Since quite a few people have gone way past the 5 yr. limit - I find it amazing that no one has mentioned the "Chipmunks" yet - ALVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zephyr-

The horrific "Red Rubber Ball" was recorded by Cyrkle. I hesitate to admit that my first concert experience in 1966 involved both the aforementioned Cyrkle and Mr. Bobby "Sunny" Hebb. Of course, they were opening for the Beatles. Until the day he died, my dad still wondered why he agreed to take us to the show.

Finally, let me add a vote for a song whose appeal completely baffles me: "Sweet Home Alabama".

I'll take your word on the live version double-click. :p

I actually don't hold Indian Outlaw against Tim McGraw so much anymore. I've come around on him now, but it took a LONG time for him to rehabilitate himself. But now that you mention the Bruce tie-in, I might be willing to completely forgive him. ;)

double-click and RMO:
I just saw Tim McGraw at the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ Monday night. Sounds like the same show - opening with Tiny Dancer from out in the middle of the audience, down to Hungry Heart over the PA before the show began. I don't know all his stuff that well but a few I've heard I like. My BF is a big fan - I think he's a little envious of Tim :)
Anyway we know Tim's a Bruce fan so that makes him alright with me!

sugarpie - anything by Wham is automatic.

Tim Mcgraw contingent - I must say I don't listen to country music and am completely unfamiliar with his music. I just disliked him based on association -- I can't stand his wife....she just doesn't seem genuine. lets keep this thread alive for four more years so I can add "Breathe" to this list! I'll have to cut Tim some slack because he likes Bruce -- I'll bet Faith doesn't share that interest.

:D I can't believe that patter gave away my secret. After all, Grand Funk Railroad was one of the better bands! There was some great times in the seventies, keep smiling. And patter, I am coming over with the maids outfit on just for you, make sure you put on the lava lamp and one of your 8-tracks of Barry M. We will turn it up a notch and enjoy the show. My evil song of the day for today is...

Let me tell you a story bout a man named Jed
Poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed
Then one day he was shooting at some food
when up through the ground come a bubblin' crude
Oil that is...
Texas tea...

Well the next thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire
Kinfolk says Jed you need to move away from here
California is the place you oughta be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly
Hills that is
Swimming Pools
Movie Stars...

Hey Granny.....Ya'll makin us some vittles?

At the risk of tearing your heart out Flory Days ;), were you aware that Faith covered IISFB on her Breathe album?

I know what you mean. I actually think Tim and Faith are ok. I just think that country music as a whole, especially during the mid to late 90's, was so much about image and outside songwriters that hardly any of 'em could be considered genuine.
