View Full Version : Who is Missing in Action?

I'm sitting here on a Friday night bored to death, Douger is in bed already watching one of those bang bang shoot em up guy movies, the teenagers are off playing PS2, the cat is on top of the computer and the dogs are asleep at my feet. And it's only 9:15. Some WWA I've turned out to be! Anyway, I got to thinking about the past couple of years (almost) and all of the people who have came and went here at livedaily. There are quite a few of us still here, but I think there are an equal number of people who have all but disappeared. So my question is, who would you like to see come back home to our little corner of the Bruce world? Here's a few of my picks...and if I forget anybody I apologize in advance.

Patter - Sparkle Ass the Glitter Girl
Flap - My darling bro
alleylady - Queen of the old lake
Gizzy - party planner extraordinaire
Obsessed - shy quiet and unassuming..LOL
Since 78 - the golfer
Onefan (Mare)- baseball chick from Iowa
Growing Young - dancing queen
1crazylady - moderator of all moderators
LONESTAR GIRL - that wild and wooly baby sis
Nebraska Fan - the farmboy who falls off ladders
Pova - everyone's favorite lawyer
Sherry Darlin' - my dear twin sister

Okay your turn now...I know there are lots of others....Will they come back out of the woodwork when Bruce goes on tour again? Or will they be lost forever?

Hey Toots,
I have an update on LoneStar Girl...
She's still alive & well..she's in
love with the guitarist from
Mike Wurtele's band and their a
great couple!! The Judge & I saw
Mike Wurtele & guys play in NYC
on 7/6 at Hard Rock Cafe...so the
Judge calls LoneStar on cell phone,
then we let her & the boyfriend talk!
It's such a great feeling to help
out friends in love!

CW,

Thanks for the update. :) I still talk to Lonestar Girl via email, but I was missing her here on the boards.

And where are the original Bovine Bruce fans Lucky and Rosie? This place just ain't the same without them.

hey Toots! robinia here (using doc's password). It's ok to have a quiet Friday night at home, Wild Women need to rest once in awhile! Besides, being a Wild Women isn't necessarily about what you do, it's about who you are. (Hummer help me out here!).

Anyway, I did connect with growing Young last February in Mpls when we took our kids to see BSB. She was alive and well then.

I miss ice22. Remember him? He posted alot last October, November and then seemed to fall off the face of the earth. And what about Tony from the UK? And pickles? Definitely miss LsG. I hope it's true she's found love and happiness!

I hope those who are no longer actively posting are still lurking so they know how much they are missed!

Oh, and where the heck is Andrew D. Wicks these days? He's been awfully quiet!

I need to get back to doc's party. A couple of beers and I can hardly type!

Good thread Toots!

people out of your car whilst driving
70 mph, so I'm sure he's out

Hi everyone!! So nice to be remembered Toots!

Patter!! You sweetie! Remember our late night phone call from my hotel bathtub?! Wait, that sounds funny. I was in my hotel bathroom and Patter was in her home (I don't know if she was in her bathroom or not). I was trying to be quiet for my hotel roommates.... anyway, it was just too cool to finally talk in person that night. And awesome to meet you and Toots and everyone else the next day for the Anaheim preshow bash!

Robinia, you take care of yourself over there with Doc!

Toots, I'm still around, peeking into the site when I can. I really miss those old Lake days. Does anyone hang there anymore?

I haven't been doing too much dancing lately... last time was in France when I caught the LINY special on my hotel TV! But I thought of all of you here and knew you'd understand how cool it was to see that.

I just got the Backstreets Until The End CDs (thanks Deena!) and it is so cool to hear that song through out the years.

We are overrun with kids this weekend; we've got our three plus my brother's four kids! Had a great day at a nearby pool - the only place to be when it's 90+ degrees and 70+ humidity!

Miss you all!!!! I'm hoping to make the next BAT (3, right?) if it happens. I just gotta party with my sisters again!!!

Love ya!

GY - Marquerite!!!!!! OH MY GOD - you are alive and well, thank God! Toots and I talk about you all the time and I've tried to E-mail you a few times but it always comes back to me as a dead end. Can you Private Message me your E-mail.....pretty please!

And yes, I very well remember that night I picked up my phone and hear you say "I'm finally in LA but I have to talk softly cause my roommates are sleeping so I'm sitting in the hotel bathroom in the empty bathtub with my laptop" What a HOOT!!! And we had so much fun that night and the next day at the pre-show and the concert.....Besides being in the 5th row right smack in front of Bruce and the band - Toots and I (the "Glitter Girls"} will ALWAYS REMEMBER watching you behind the stage dancing your a-s-s off - I just wish we could all get together again soon!!!!!

Love ya, take care Marguerite and KEEP IN TOUCH!!!!! (My E-mail address and Toots' are still the same as always!!) PM ME!!!!!!

DoctorT / Robinia: Ice22 is still alive. We're mailing from time to time. I don't know why he isn't posting here anymore. I met him in Milwaukee and we were at the Indy show, too. But it was all in 99 - we're getting older, now it looks like it was last year ;) Luckily my Bruce buddy double click is again on the board from time to time, so I have someone who was at those shows with me :)

Try to select a day in the future and those of us who know the addy's or phone numbers of the MIA's can contact them and ask them to join a reunion thread. It'll be just like old times! I spoke to the long lost Gizzy today via IM and she filled me in a little on your escapades and said you might show up around these parts. Now if we could only get her to post! I guess I should have posted the "missing in action" thread a while ago. Patter and I were talking the other day and she asked about you also. We really need to have a lake reunion soon. It will have to be at the "old" greasylake where we used to go to, greasylake.org has their chat set up so you have to register, and I think some of our antics might curl the regulars hair..LOL I don't have the link to it since my aol crashed, could someone post it? Please define "pinning Mom"...

Toots
Jul 27th, 2001, 12:34 PM
"Pinning Mom" Well Rich, with Gizzy you just never know what it might mean. Maybe it's a new type of WWF wrestling..."Gizzy pinned by son in the WWF Championship match"....Or maybe She is a bit of a masochist and likes to get jabbed with pins. Your guess is as good as mine.

Toots

P.S. It was great fun with everyone in the lake last night. :) When's the next one?

Gizzy
Jul 27th, 2001, 03:59 PM
Well, I'd normally not be able to resist such a straight line set up,
but much too potentially incestuous to go there...

When Boy Scouts are awarded special honors,
the mother (who usually remains at a
young-male-advancing-through-pre-pubescence-subject-to-embarrassment-by-mom-presence-respecting distance)
attends the awards ceremony, during which the scout pins a corresponding
pin on his mother's lapel. The proud mother then tastefully displays her
amassing pins at any and all scouting activities she might dare to attend.

Does that answer the pinning query, flameboy? :-)
Not that I couldn't take him in a fair fight...

(Of course, I brought my computer home last Thursday night only to discover I needed a different AOL password, so I missed swimming with everyone! And after Toots took the time to tell me how!)

I've missed everyone so much! Have been AWOL for so long because of the craziness in my industry for the first six months of this year. Thank goodness it slowed down after July 1st.

Been fortunate enough to stay in touch with Dari and Lori as well. Would love to join in at another Lake gathering soon. Toots: can I swim pleaaaaaase? I don't wanna just hafta sit on the dock... ;)

I do miss checking in here and promise to do so regularly. Boy, we need another tour Bruce. My "Bruce Withdrawal" t-shirt from Dari is getting awfully thread-bare!

Cheers,
Stretch

Great thread Toots! It's so good to see that most everybody is still somehow connected and not totally lost! I am definitely one that is not checking or posting regularly anymore because real grown-up life has been keeping me too busy - I miss everyone and just love it when I do find the time to participate again -

Youguys are the greatest and there is always a good laugh somewhere to be found here!

Gizzy - I too was in my thirties when this started and in about one month I will be starting a new decade myself!!

Well, let's see if I can make it in the Lake sometimes. There's a big time difference, but if I come home on a Friday or Saturday night (who knows, it can be 3, 4, 5 or 6am - substract 9 and you'll get Pacific Time), I can turn on the puter and see who's swimming...
Hey 69 Chevy, E Street Girl... where are you?! ;)

Great times!

Great thread, Toots! It's wonderful to see everyone again -- all these people who first welcomed me here and held my hand when I jumped in the lake for the first time! Let's see if we can get everyone back! Missed you all -- lots! Here's one more:

TWIG-- where are you?

Toots -- are you officially setting the next "lake date"?
Someone please pass my swim fins and my cooler...

Well I'm sitting here at work listening to NY Seranade from the NY set of discs, and have a little time to kill and I find this post going on and on and on...I know alot of you don't know me but I did meet some of you:
DocT
Andrew
RTM2
Robinia
Magic Rat
islander
Pova...
and all the others I met at the parties on the tour of the GREATEST band in the land. I hope to make it back here more often, mainly because these are some of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of meeting.
I do have 1 small request. I relocated to Seattle a few months ago and I'm missing my Philly discs from the B-day show and the following night back in '99". Could I possibly request a copy of these 2 shows from someone, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you all have a great 2nd half of summer and lets get some reunion parties going..I plan on going to Vegas in Nov to see U2.. I think Bruce was there in Nov right? Could be a start of something, nothing like Las Vegas to cure a little pre winter blues.

I didn't get to meet alot of you, but the ones I did meet were all great people... so I wanted to say hello and let you know I'm alive and well.

Much has happened since the last we met (in Atlanta-IslandFan will be pleased to know that he now adorns my wall in a Bruce collage, his picture in 'Gotti' t-shirt from the Atlanta Jounal-Constitution) most importantly in a few days, Mrs. FL and I will be joined on our journey by the third member of our combo... and we couldn't be more excited. We have waited to find out, will keep you posted as to whether the name will be Bruce or Bailey.

I check the board from time to time, and find it comforting just to see the old familiar names. Has anyone officially named Dari the greatest living Brucefan? She seems to be the EF Hutton of Brucefandom, her name on your thread always gives it immediate credibility. Man At The Top always seemed to share my viewpoint on most issues, and he clued me in on the transport in Orlando from the pub... thanks again. I had the priviledge of buying DocT a shot of something flammable in Atlanta, that was a highlight. NaughtySherry's posts always made me laugh. LightningShack was so nice and IMO has the coolest LD name. MusicTraveler, Andrew, and so many others. You guys are the greatest.

THanks,
Skip

Hi Dari and All,

I heard from GoCart last weekend.

The p.s. is from his email note...

p.s. I expect to say hi to everyone on the board again within the week. I
can't wait!! It's been a LONG four months.

GoCartMozart
Aug 10th, 2001, 04:53 PM
Well, as emsquared has foretold, I HAVE returned!! Oh, man, does it feel good to be back. I've missed y'all terribly.

I knew it was time to come back this week when:

1. Sunday I realized that I was within a couple of days of finishing the project that has kept me 120% busy at work for the last four months (more about that later.)

2. Monday, emsquared (I think) e-mailed me a copy of this thread.

3. Tuesday, I saw a headline in USAToday which read:

"Softening Hummer's Image"

It was with mixed feelings that I discovered this story was about GM trying to change the public viewpoint of the passenger vehicle they modeled after the military Humm-Vee. I was disappointed that the story wasn't about our own Hummer, but glad to see that our WWA wasn't trying to change her image!! Nevertheless, I knew this was a sign that it was time to come back. As with this whole absence, which I thought would be about a month, and never dreamed would last FOUR, it is only appropriate that it took until 5 o'clock Friday to actually make it here.

I apologize for the lack of notice of my absence, but I did have a couple of very good reasons (and a couple which aren't quite as good). It would take a lot more than just Wild Horses to keep me away from here. Mountains high, rivers wide: not enough! But here's the story in a nutshell:

Before April 1, I was accessing the site about 80% of the time from work and about 20% from home. There seemed to be a cumulative hour or so per day that I was either waiting for a program to compile or link or waiting for someone to get back to me with critical information. This is relevant because: at that point, I ran into a programmer's worst nightmare. We discovered that, on a project with an utterly immovable deadline (by law, the program had to be working on July 1), a significant section of the program which was NOT supposed to require modification at the time the schedule was laid out WOULD NOT WORK with the new changes in place and WOULD have to be modified fairly significantly itself. At that point, we were on what appeared to be a very makeable schedule. It was immediately clear that we were in deep weeds (and thus began, the multi-tasking 120%, pedal-to-the-floor from the time I came in until the time I left work situation I referred to earlier). On July 1, we had a program which basically accomplished the goal, although for some situations (which were not the norm, but unfortunately were not uncommon) manual intervention into the process was required, which slowed down both the production system AND our development since we were required to continue development and handle those manual interventions as well. Finally, yesterday we managed to get the rest of the changes in place and avoid the manual interventions.

And THAT was the easy part. Since April 1, my father has been in the hospital twice and, in between, moved from the house he lived in for 39 years into an assisted living center. He has fairly advanced emphysema, and we had just gotten him to consider looking into assisted living environments when the first hospital trip took place, and the doctors recommended STRONGLY that he go from the hospital into such a place and no longer live by himself. Handling all the details of that transition, as well as the process of applying for a military pension for which he is entitled, to help pay for the assisted living center, could have been a full-time job in themselves (it feels like I've spent as much time on it as I have here at the office!). Only someone who's dealt with the Veteran's Administration before can imagine the paperwork and the delays involved in dealing with this organization. (You military guys -- is the military itself this unbelievably bogged down in bureaucracy or is the VA actually worse?? It's hard to believe the military is that bogged down. If it were, we'd still be filling out the paperwork to get out of the Vietnam War, not just printing up the paper money to pay for it!)

Anyway, I was finally getting caught up enough with that situation to see some light at the end of the tunnel, and responded to an e-mail from Dari about three weeks ago that I would be back REAL soon, when he went back in the second time -- this time with pneumonia on top of the emphysema. THAT is a very ugly combination. I BEG any of you who are smokers, PLEASE STOP NOW!! PLEASE!! Whatever you get from the nicotine CANNOT be worth it. It was painful to WATCH, I can't imagine how hard that week was for him to go through. Fortunately, though, the second antibiotic they tried on the pneumonia worked very well (the particular strain of pneumonia he had was resistant to the first antibiotic) and he made it through his week of Hell. He's back home (his apartment in the assisted living center) and doing fairly well. Although his strength is way down, and he lost 12 pounds (which he didn't need to lose. He was already 5-7, 115 pounds!) I hope he'll gradually be able to build his strength and weight back up again. I know it took a long time for him to work his way back from the radiation treatments for prostate cancer -- and that was when he was 5 years younger.

Those are my two GOOD reasons. My not so good reasons:
1. We've had out-of-town company for 7 of the last 12 weekends. My dad had 11 sisters and a brother, only one of whom lives in Houston right now. This only accounted for half the company, but doubling our expected amount of out-of-town company has kept us pretty darned busy. It's been nice to see everybody, but why does it seem like it's only during funerals, marriages, critical illnesses, and other such stressful situations that families are able to get together? (Answer my own question: because in a family that large, it's almost inevitable that somebody will be going through such a situation at almost any given time!)

2. What little web-time I've had available has had to be used to fulfill my role as commissioner of the Fantasy Baseball league I'm in, as well as keeping up with the Springsteen-fan league we put toegether here, right before all this came down. (I don't know how, given how little time I've had for it, but somehow I've managed to stay neck-and-neck with Hazard from Harvard for about seventh place most of the season.)

"All them things that seemed so important,
They vanished right into the air...."

No, not really, this site never vanished, nor ceased to feel important to me. Just knowing it was here, ready for me to come back to when I finally got through this period of stress, was very helpful.

To those of you who e-mailed me during this time and who did send your positive thoughts and prayers my dad's way: THANK YOU. It means more to me than you could ever know.

To those of you who've expressed your hopes to see me back on this thread: Thanks for the thoughts, but you know what they say -- be careful what you wish for. (You've probably forgotten just how verbose I can be!!!)

And to everyone else: Be warned -- HEEE'S BAAAAACK!!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a LOT of catching up to do on this site.

p.s. As emsquared mentioned in the previous post -- it HAS been a LONG four months. It's really good to be back!!!

And ok, if that story was a nutshell, I REALLY don't want to see the tree the nut grew on.

Good to have you back, GoCart. Good luck with your Dad--it's so hard to see our parents getting old, huh? I am so blessed that both of mine are still basically healthy, though my mom has a touch of emphysema also. She was a smoker for 30 years but did manage to quit about 10 years ago. It's never too late! You're right, if you smoke, QUIT NOW. I work in a hospital and 8 out of 10 patients in the critical care units with hopeless illnesses are smokers. It is absolutely the worst thing you can do for your health. Anyway, welcome back.

what can i say but... YAY GOCART'S BACK ( sung to the tune of course of "kitty's back").

been missing you bigtime my friend. i am so sorry to hear about your dad. i lost my aunt who i was closer to than i am to my mom to this dreaded disease. it's very hard to see our loved ones go downhill from something that could be prevented and i echo your sentiments about smoking. i am thrilled to hear that your self-employment wound up being a great move and i totally understand the ridiculous hours. i may post here a lot but it is between the 80-90 hours i work weekly. surviving the visiting relatives is another trip altogether and i can only imagine how much youand your wife relish some time alone after all of that company.

all of that said...i owe you a tee. in case you didn't know you won the annual LD reader's poll in which you were voted "most missed board member" by a huge margine. that should, if nothing else, let you know your standing here at LD....

Glad your Dad is doing better and your project is done. Sent you the e-mail of this thread and several others e-mails. I will have some CDs for you when I get back from Atlanta (I can't remember if I told you about them in the last e-mail).

Bossmom,
I'm still here, posting once in a blue moon, but mostly working a lot and building a house and traveling every other weekend.

Mr. Andrew D. Wicks was in O-town on Friday night, so we scheduled a mini-reunion and had dinner and drinks at Disney World. We called Doc T on his cell to find him having dinner with Paulie and All that Heaven will Allow in Baltimore!

Hope to see lots of LiveTramps at the Stone Pony on the 18th and again at the Birchmere, where some of you will get to meet Mr. Moriley for the first time.

BTW, my favorite missing person is TougherThan....Where are you???? Hope to see you on the 18th.

ACK! Thanks for reminding me Obs! I've been so busy with work and helping Douger get his baseball team together that I forgot to post it. So....How about every Friday night we have a standing invitation to the "old" lake? If you can make it that would be fabulous, and if you can't then catch us next time. We had such a good time there when we all got together. Here's the link:
http://www.greasylake.springsteen.com/main-tc.htm

Once you get there, you have to click on the link that says Palace Amusements, then chat. Wait for the screen to come up where it says "Guest" you can highlight it and put your own name in. Then click enter. You do not have to put in a password. Please note that this is a different chatroom than the one at greasylake.org. It was put together by Karsten of greasylake a long time ago, then abandoned when he put together the newer site. The "new" one at greasylake.org requires registering for it, the one we are going to does not. If you have to register you are at the wrong one!

Obs...I'll do an email to my list, if you do one also we can hopefully pick up the old regulars.
