I read this last night. Then I printed it out, dug out my dictionary, and read it again. (What can I say......only a 9th grade education)
The piece was wonderful and thought provoking, and I think I'll read it again when I get home.

I think we need to send Mr. Bonca a big bouquet of flowers or anything else he wants. And every one of those idiot writers that we talked about recently should be tied in a chair and have this read to them 24-7 for the rest of their lives or until they get it.

Thanks Rumson!

Rumson Thanks!!! What a great article!

It absolutely amazes me the effect that LOHAD has on me. I have yet to hear it one time without goosebumps and getting tears in my eyes. I got a similar reaction just reading about it. I guess this is why Paulie and I have chosen it to be the last song played at our wedding reception next year.

Rumson, Thank you for posting that! WOW! Someone else gets it! He nailed LOHAD too! I can't listen to it without being affected either. I hear it, and think that's what America is supposed to be all about. I would absolutely love to use it as my campaign song, but out of respect to Bruce, I can't.

Thanks, Rumson -- this one's a keeper! I think I'll carry copies around so that when my friends and family ask for the millionth time WHY a thirty-something year old is following a rocker around the country, I'll simply hand them this article without a word.

I thought it was a great, well written article.
two minor points:

1)"That Springsteen doesn't call it a night at this point is a measure of his own rock fanaticism as well as his deep desire to continually complicate his vision. The stage darkens, the crowd roar drops (though not enough for Bruce: during the intro he says, "We're going to need some quiet"), and the band goes into the dark, elegiac 'American Skin (41 Shots)' "

American Skin wasn't actually played after LOHAD, so the above statement is kind of a mischaracterization drawn from someone watching the HBO show and not on memories of the shows, of which LOHAD ended almost all of them (it did for me at least). certainly American Skin was never played after LOHAD, right?

2)"...and of a young ghetto mother who we imagine has heard of the case and cautions her child as he heads off to school "

I didn't think it was particularly about a mother from a ghetto, I thought it was about ANY (or ALL) black mothers. The reason why it's an important distinction goes to the heart of the song, and the heart of the issue.

Now that the lawyer in me is happy, I got more chills reading about LOHAD then when I was at the shows! That song never did it for me, althought I can appreciate the message. this article also reminded me that I also really , really miss seeing Bruce live, and hope he comes back again soon.

Thank you! I'm gonna print out the whole thing and put by my computer at school to remind me that I'm not a crazy person. Or maybe it can remind me that I am a crazy person but that I am crazy for all the right reasons!!

He took the words right out of my mouth. Are you sure this guy is not our own GoCart Mozart?

It could not be said any better.
