I just heard the fighter jets flying over my house right now.
I have a cousin who works in the W.T.C. and one who works for the Justice Dept.
I am terrified for my husband who works at 1 Battery Park Plaza. It's the building at the tip of Manhattan. He saw the first plane fly by right outside his window. It shook the building. They were watching people jump out the World Trade Center building before it collapsed.
He can't see out his window anymore. He can't leave the building, and I am terrified that he is down there.
This is incomprehensible.

Everyone here is safe, they cancelled classes, and prayer sessions are starting. I just wanted to share my pain, sorrow, outrage, horror, and fear with this group. I haven't been around much lately, but you're still a group, like my family that I have to share this with. I'm shocked and horrified. Stunned. For 30 minutes, the pictures of a hi-jacked commercial airliner crashing into the World Trade Center were the most horrifying image I'd ever seen. 30 minutes later, that image was overwhelmed by the collapse of the first tower, and by the pictures of the cloud of smoke covering all of lower Manhattan.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, especially those of you who live or who have family who live in New York and Washington. May God help us all.

carey,
the justice department building in DC has been evacuated.
4 planes hijacked, 2 flights from dulles, 1 from boston and 1 from newark. (two american and two united)
i'll send this while i still have phone service. phones out much of the morning here in tampa area. i live on tampa bay, just a few miles across the water from macdill AFB, which is the HQ of some of the U.S. military operations in the mideast, so i'm lucky to have phones at all.
i'm heading into the newsroom now, but you'll have access to most of what i do by just watching TV.
God bless those in the world trade centers, the pentagon, those nearby, the people on the planes, their families, the rescue workers....
my heart is breaking.
i was born and raised in DC, and my brother, his wife and many of my friends work for the government there. not surprisingly, i can't get through on any calls to the area.
i'm told more than 50,000 people work in the world trade centers daily. that means the death toll could be akin to american lives lost in vietnam. and this war has just started.

Clearly, this is unprecedented. I am in shock as are my friends, family and neighbors, and our prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones. I have friends who work in the financial district of NYC, and I am not sure of their wherabouts. I work for a major defense contractor and our offices are shutdown.
Somehow, somewhere, someone is going to be blamed for these horrific acts, and usually these f-ing morons are going to be connected with a particular "religious" group.
Let me be clear: I am not an apologist for these bastards. Obviously, these acts are beyond the acceptability of ANY religion, no matter how it is justified. Being the resident Muslim on LiveDaily, I can tell you first hand that the Islamic community nationwide is outraged by these attacks and has already organized a blood drive with the Red Cross to assist those in need in NYC and DC.
I wholeheartedly agree that we must go after these murderers. After my community's experience in being blamed and attacked after the Oklahoma City bombing, it is important that we not blame all of a particular faith because of the actions of a handful of cowards.
If you feel helpless in any way, please give blood. You are DIRECTLY saving a life.
Peace,
Tarik (aka Heldup)

As someone who works under the 3rd largest government building north of NYC, I can say that I was a bit apprehensive until Mrs. Muddy and I were the hell out of Albany.
One of the Albany stations is saying that one of the planes that hit the WTC was tracked over Albany, and the Hudson Valley.
I think that what Tarik said is worth repeating, over and over: Just because some adherants of a faith, or religion, do something purportedly in the name of that faith/religion, that does not mean that all those people who are of that faith should be held even remotely accountable.
I have a fair amount of friends who could have been at either the Pentagon (former Army buddies) or at the WTC (the NYS Dept of Health has an office there), and I want to know what happened to them, just as much as I want to know what happened to BD and JanieGirl.

When I first heard this news this morning I could hardly believe it. I was certain that my associate was exagerating; this sounded too much like a movie. I do some work with an independent TV station here and we picked up news coverage on satellite and have been airing it all day. What a tragedy.....unbelievable. There is no way to exagerrate the horror.
I have not had much time to post lately but knew that checking in with this board community was essential today ---- just like listening to the news on NPR or watching the TV news.
My prayers go out to all of those who are suffering from personal loss and uncertainty right now. I am hopeful that all of you on this board hear from your friends and loved ones that you are concerned about; and I am grateful that those of you who might have been there were not. My boss's wife is a flight attendant, and she was home today. Our neighbor is a pilot, and he was also home. My wife is scheduled to be in NYC for a seminar exactly 30 days from now; she most likely will not go. It is scary to think how easily one could be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Update:
I got through to one of my friends who works in the financial district right next to the WTC buildings. He said he was on the phone when the first plane hit. He says they evacuated most of BOTH WTC buildings before the second plane hit and, therefore, before both buildings collapsed. He says it appears the ones who didn't get evacuated were those above the spot where the first plane hit. I sure hope he is right, because I have not heard this from any of the media reports. But since he was actually there, I have reason to believe...

This has been one of the most difficult days. I teach seven and eight year olds in a small town far removed from so called targets. To privately hear bits of what happened around 11:00 a.m. and have to look into their innocent unknowing faces and know the evil that had happened was beyond sad. I couldn't and didn't want to try to explain to them. Prayers for victims and their families--and may the ones responsible for the indescribable horror be found and punished.

Whew! Glad to hear that Bronx Darren, JanieGirl and Spirit have been heard from. Still waiting on BillyLI and JRZGRL though.... PLEASE be okay.....
My friend John is a train dispatcher and his train runs into the WTC. He's okay and most of his friends have been heard from but it's the large amount of firemen who are unaccounted for that is still a huge concern.
This is beyond belief..

Boss MD, I am glad to hear that you and your family are safe.
BTW, I don't like the last paragraph you wrote; I was afraid of that; it makes me want to keep my kids safe at home; or at least we'd all be together. One of our school principals told me today that he figured our attendance would be bad tomorrow.
CBS News just reported that there is pretty good evidence that Bin Laden is responsible for this.
I continue to pray for all of us. Most of the churches around here are setting up prayer vigils. This thing is far from over, I'm afraid.

I just want to thank everyone on this board for sharing their thoughts on this horrific day.
I've been shaking all day and I know we'll all get through this.
I live about 60 miles from New York City but we're feeling the affects here.
My local hospital, Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, has tents set up in its parking lot and is receiving several of the wounded.
I drove up Ocean Ave. to the Sandy Hook area and the smoke was clearly visible down the Jersey Shore. It was so strange not seeing the two twin towers. All you could see was lower Manhattan and a lot of smoke.
My sister works and lives in Manhattan and she and everyone in her office saw the second tower go down. They are all tramautized from seeing that. She is OK otherwise.
Her boyfriend works down near anthe World Trade Center but he left after the first plane crash and saw the second plane hit. He is OK.
I have a friend who is a flight attendant on United Airlines and flies out of Newark. I'm praying that I hear she's OK.
The earie part around here is all the cars parked at the train stations and wondering who may not return home among the commuters.

Just got home.....
What a horrific day. It is a really scary sight (and sound) in school today. The entire high school was in complete shock...it is not often you see 1000 teenagers walking around school silent. While it is a terrible day for every American, you can only imagine what it is like for us teenagers. I, for one, will be turing 18 in a couple months and (if this thing turns into war) have the possibility of being drafted. I always knew that they day would come when I would have to worry about the draft....now that day is here. Hopefully I can get accepted to college before I turn 18 so that I may have 'some' immunity to the draft.
You would think that a bunch of 14-18 year olds would not fully understand the magnitude of this event...I can assure you (at least in Woodstock CT) we do.....
My Trig. teacher is getting married in a couple of months.....his best man works for the CIA at the Pentagon. He spent all day today trying to get a hold of him...to no avail.
My cousin just started his first year of college last week.....he goes to an art school in lower Manhattan....no word from him yet.
My best friend's brother just joined the Navy a couple weeks ago and his cousin is in the ROTC....
This is the first national event that has had a big impact on me....i'm scared. I always assumed that as an American I would never have to be scared about my safety/freedom....I am.
I'm sure everyone here (that is old enough) remembers where they were when JFK was shot.....I will ALWAYS remember today.

Hey gang, even if you are outside the NY area, please still contact the Red Cross and make an appointment to give blood. For an example, Minneapolis/St. Paul shipped 1000 units to the East coast tonight, greatly depleating any supply that was here. Also, the need for blood in the areas hit will continue beyond today and tomorrow. Many of those injured are burn victims, and some of them will be in danger for weeks, if not months.
It takes a maximum of 40 minutes (it takes me that long because I'm a slow bleeder; the Red Cross has told me it normally takes about 30 minutes), it's free, it's safe, and you could save a life. And you'll get free food, too.

i watched happen live. all of it
I'll never forget it as long as I live. 9-11 will live in my mind forever. I have a three year old cousin. he'll never truly know what i saw. people jumping 100 stories to they're deaths to escape the flames. I saw New York be swallowed in dust live the two Ghostbusters movies I used to watch growing up. I am looking out my window now and I see smoke that was from New York. I maybe 100 miles away but I now know what those noises I heard at 9 o'clock eastern standard time were. I thank God that my aunt and uncle are okay. And others in my family who were in the area. I pray for the souls lost in today's bombing. I know I won't sleep tonight and for a long time I won't sleep so soundly like I once slept when the Manhattan sky line was uspoiled. Now when i got to the city, it'll never be the same.
I'm 17 and it's changed my life in such a violent way. Imagine what kids about age 8, 10, 12. Children who don't yet understand the facts of life and the fact that some things you cant explain. Somethings happen for no real reason at all.

J10, thanks for sharing your thoughts; it's good to get a teenager's perspective on this. I think we're already at war, at least that's what the newsmen keep reporting; it's just a different type of war than we've ever fought before. My kids' schools kept their tv's on all day, so they're aware of what's going on. I told them they would remember this day forever. I guess because we live so far away from NYC, they really couldn't fathom what has happening. We will all be forever changed; I am unusually tense tonight and want my youngest son to stay on the porch and play, instead of venturing out in the yard and behind the house with the pets.

Thanks for your concern, Laurie.
I'm OK here in Jersey and my family is all accounted for in various places. A friend who works in the Travelers Building near the WTC has not been heard from but we're hoping it's just a communications problem.
My prayers continue for everyone involved....firefighters, police, doctors, nurses, emts, volunteers, victims, families, the pilots, the flight attendants, the passengers....I could go on and on.
I have been fighting the urge to cry alternating with the urge to be sick all day......don't know which is a worse feeling. I've had to walk away from the news on numerous occasions..... the celebrating in various countries was something that hit me especially hard, I just can't handle that....... to celebrate the loss of human life is beyond me....innocent civilian lives.
We haven't received any casualties as of yet, as a nurse I am on call indefinitely....all the area hospitals are on disaster alert.
I pray for the LD family members we haven't heard from.
God bless,

I have to say reading this thread throughout the day has been comforting--reading everyone's stories and how most people have been accounted for have made me feel more connected than watching the news.
I found out about it (here in LA) when my mother in law called at 6:15 to tell us she and my father in law were being evacuated from their respective offices in lower manhattan. Fortunately, they were able to get through with periodic updates, including their walk across the Brooklyn Bridge back home.
Every night as I put my kids to bed we read/sing this beautiful picture book with the words to This Land is Your Land (it even includes a small charactacure of Bruce in it!) (thanks Stretch). Tonight's version was particularly poignant for the obvious reasons, but when we got the drawing of the Manhattan skyline, my throat really caught. What an unbelievable course of events. I'm not looking forward to returning to my office on the top floor of the twin towers here in Century City.
My heart, thoughts and best wishes go out to all . . .

I work in TV news.
Yesterday was the hardest, longest day of my life professionally... magnified my the fact thatI was born in NYC, grew up in that TV market, and have been to the WTC observation deck.
When I got home, I hugged and kissed my family, then went to the stereo. I played "This Land is Your Land" from Live 75-85, sung along, and released the cry that I had been holding back all day.

My thoughts are with those who have gone to a better place and those who have lost loved ones. There is a state of shock over here in London. We watched, at work, in horror as it unfolded on the TV. There were tears in the eyes of people at work. The UK is in shock.
I was over in LA this summer with my family visiting my relatives. I am a dual national USA/UK. I was born in the UK. My Dad is American and my spiritual home is the US. I have longed to live in the states with my wife and children. My wife is English and she has taken the scenes and aftermath from yesterday very badly. Our hearts are very heavy at present. I work near to where my children go to school and at 3pm London time when we first started to hear about the WTC I rushed down to the school. I don't think I have hugged my children so tight in all my life. You never want to let them out of your sight again.
It is hard to get the image of those scenes out of your mind.
I am glad to read the posts from my friends on LD that all seem safe.
Sorry to ramble but my thoughts are not clear.

As of this moment, NBC is reporting that there could be 800 dead in the Pentagon. The plane--I just heard a plane overhead, too; must be an F-15 or an F-16--was travelling over 600 mph when it hit.
On a more hopeful note, one of the NBC reporters in Lower Manhattan (Alex Witt) is saying something about a rumor that a fire company--six of NYCs Bravest--were pulled alive from the carnage. Let's hope that this--finding survivors--happens again . . . Also, she just said that two NYC cops were rescued from the rubble.

Tuesday around 3pm local time (9am in NYC). Here at work a guy told us something about a plane crashing in the WTC. Couldn't believe it, trying to get on a news website... cnn too busy, bbc too busy, local news website talking about a plane crash in NYC. Somebody has a little tv set at his desk, watched the two towers on fire and the pentagon. Then replays of that airplane coming in. Unbelievable!
Just saw a video this morning (10:30am local) of the first airplane hitting the tower...
An undescribable feeling took over me. I went on a vacation last year in June to NYC (for a reason everybody knows) and DC, went into the 3 buildings on a tourist tour and now seeing them collaps!
I was on the phone last night with some really good friends in the US to support them. I have some friends on their honeymoon here in Europe, hope they can get home in time...

Oh my God.
We already have a phrase for yesterday, "a day that will live in infamy"
9-11-2001
I feel so utterly disconnected right now. I know I can't do anything even if i was at home, but being 3000 miles away, I just feel so helpless.
Glad to hear that we have good reports, I was particularly worried about folks like Billy, but at least there's some good news here. I hope everyone and their families are all ok.
I heard the news on a bus from back into Cork city, all of us except the teacher, American. It was like something out of a bizarre dream, that was slightly before 10 am, eastern. I got to a friend's apartment and started to watch the rest unfold between Sky News, BBC, and RTE 1. This is the most terrifying thing I can imagine ever happening. Watching the radar flight paths they recreated, two of the jets flew almost directly over my house, in western mass. they probably flew directly over my school in worcester. that's terrifying.
My thoughts and prayers are with everybody even remotely involved.
Even though I have a bad history in blood donations, this is one time where I wouldn't even think twice, no matter how dizzy i get.
Just read Shea Stadium is set up as a rescue headquarters.
It's good to know that we can come together.
I can't get over the fact there are places that have people celebrating this. It's not as if we celebrated when we bombed Iraq during the gulf war. It's not as we celebrate everytime we hear about explosions across the world. We shake our heads and say " what a shame it had to come to this" we worry about the loss of innocent lives, wishing that only those who died were those responsibility for it having come this far. but we do not celebrate. and it sickens me that there are those who are glad that thousands could be dead. thousands of absolutely innocent people, people who went to work, not thinking in terms of political goals, probably never giving thought to causing harm or damage to any nation or people. thinking about a day of work, then heading back home. innocent lives. i'm saddened, and I am angered. and i don't know who to feel this anger towards. but i can say that even after watching that footage, knowing people celebrated, I still don't feel that there should be knee jerk, immediate revenge. This is beyond going simply to a legalistic style persuit, but I hope no more innocent lives need to be lost.
sorry for that political rant.

I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who called yesterday to inquire about Beth's safety. Fortunately, she works up on 57th Street (ironic, eh? :)), and was safely in her building well before these attacks occurred. She left for NJ at about 1:30 and five hours, one ferry, two buses and one train later, was back in her apartment, safe and sound. And her office is closed today, which gives me a big sigh of relief.

I am relieved to check in this morning and see how many of "us" are accounted for and safe. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. I was at a meeting in DC yesterday morning (got back home to NJ by evening) - and it's a hell of a thing when being a couple of blocks from a major terrorist attack on the Pentagon isn't the scary part of the day. The magnitude of what happened in NY is unfathomable. I hope we hear of more rescues today.

This is my first chance to get on-line, and am happy to hear the continuing "I'm OK"'s. God bless everyone who is still waiting to hear from friends and family. The reports are coming in slowly of survivors, keep the faith. I know that's easy for me to say, but it's all I've got.
Working in northeast New Jersey I was lucky to be far enough away to feel somewhat safe, but close enough to have the opportunity (Can't think of a better phrase) to witness this dispicable series of events, first from an eerily clear view northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike and then from the balcony of my office.
It's all been said so I don't have to get into the feelings ranging from shock to anger, of compassion and contempt. It's so unreal, yet so very real, if that makes any sense.
Say prayers, GIVE BLOOD, have faith.

Thank you to Billy, Rich, and all others in the NYPD and FDNY as well as those helping in all ways they can.

Glad all of our board members are okay. Didn't realize so many live and/or work in New York. Another reason I think we should put hometowns back on with the members' names and number of posts (when everything begins to return to normal) - it makes us seem more human. And as Ken said, thank god there are people there like Ken, Billy, and all of the other wonderful people who are putting their own lives at risk to help the victims. From everything I saw on tv, and contrary to the stereotypes of only caring about themselves, New Yorkers certainly do know how to step up in times of tragedy and reach out to help others.

Dari,
I can't tell you how relieved I am to read that you are alright. I had this sick feeling all day yesterday thinking about how you were probably still back east and praying that you weren't anywhere near the WTC. As to all our fellow LD friends I am so glad that all of you are safe. There are no words to describe how sick I feel for everyone who lost a loved one yesterday and for what this has done to our nation and to the world. My prayers go out to those who are injured, trapped and to the families of those killed.
God Bless all of us.

Just as a show of solidarity, worry, and hope.

Thanks Madame Marie for the thoughts. Murphs AOK.
I work in NJ but also have staff in NYC (midtown) and I was actually with my mom in a NJ hospital yesterday when the terror was in progress. I watched it on TV and I could see the towers collapse from her window.
I worked in downtown for 11 years and commuted to the Trade Center everyday and was at a system demo less than 4 months ago on the 102nd floor at 2 WT. Although the people were not friends per se they were business contacts. I have no friends that worked in the Towers but knew a few other business contacts that did. My girlfriends new job is 4 blocks from the towers and she was to start on October 1st once her leg completely healed. We visited downtown often and it will NEVER be the same. Yes America will rebuild and NYC will rebound but the world was changed forever yesterday.
My boss has a brother that is a fireman and he just told me 5 minutes ago he is missing and might be trapped. Needless to say I am sick about it. I know 2 other fireman in NYC and they are both AOK.

I am relieved to hear good news about so many of our group. I've been especially fearful for the firemen and policemen from our board and I'm so glad to hear them accounted for.
I'm afraid that we have way too many greater New York members to avoid having one of us or one of our acquaintances be among the victims. This is a true disaster and it affects all of us, but my prayers and thoughts especially go out to those of you in the New York and Washington areas. This is going to hurt for a very long time.
Zeph, I understand the feeling of helplessness and isolation you feel being so far away from home at a time like this. In 1994, I was living in England during the worst flooding in the history of Houston (until this year, anyway). I'm just glad that you were able to get to this board and join us in sharing our sorrow and pain. Even that far away, you AREN'T alone!

Glad to hear more "OK's" from board members. The friend I mentioned has been accounted for, evacuated in time. He had been in #7 at the time of the first plane crash and was evacuated then.....witnessed the rest but is safe.
Thank you Rich, Billy and all other rescue workers. Still praying hard for all involved in both cities.
Also, if you pray please add prayers for our country's leaders at this time. We may not agree with our government at times and our personal choice for leadership may not be in a top seat but the people in these positions really need prayers for guidance at this time.
Brucegroupie - Thanks, I made it home over the weekend. I keep trying to get an e-mail out to you and keep getting pulled away from the computer but I should have some time tonight and will get one out. I'm really sorry I missed you when you were here in Jersey.
God Bless,

I've been lurking on this thread for the last day and a half and like all others, hoping that all of our own were all right. My hope, love, and belief that all is well goes to all the families in need. Thanks to all on the board who worked the phones and physically went to NYC to check things out. You are much appreciated. May God be with them all those who are still looking for family members and loved ones.
On a side note, as a college student, I took my first trip to NYC. I snapped shots of everything, including myself in the Waldorf Astoria lobby bathroom. Tonight, I finally pulled myself away from the news coverage to find that batch of photos that included a trip to the top of the WTC. As a naive young woman of 21 who had grown up in the mountains of NC and really never went anywhere before, I snapped photos from every side of the WTC. It was the most spectatular sight I had ever seen in my whole life. One of the things that really sticks in my mind is that the elevator was so crowded (maybe not in the minds of NY'ers), we literally zoomed up to the top of the building. We all marvelled at modern techonlogy. (It's 1981). As I tried to find these photos tonight, I went down memory lane, a couple of Bruce tour books, many photos, news clippings and postcards of Bruce that friends have sent me. Some postcards that are now considered politically incorrect. So many articles on Bruce that I have saved, someday I guess they will be worth something. Believe it or not, many smiles. So many others are doing the same thing as I am now, looking for pictures of loved ones. Shots that stick in their head of their loved one as they are now stuck in time. Time is frozen for all of us.
The worst part of today, about 2:00PM, our power went out. I had been trying to get on with life as usual, pull myself away from the TV and get on with it. I told a friend last night who had a 9 year old that was having a hard time that terrorists love country music and there is no way they would hit Nashville (well, hey, what's a small white lie at this time???) Needless to say, I was shaking for an hour until the power went back on. No excuse, beautiful day, no reason for the power to go out. Dumb luck.
Just needed to connect and share. Hope no one finds these memories and thoughts offensive. Love to all.

Nash Cat, your post was very beautiful and I don't think anyone could be offended by it at all. It made me remember one of my sisters who, also as a college student, in 1985 or so, visited NYC for New Year's Eve. She toured several of the buildings; I remember her telling of going to the top of the Empire State Building; I don't remember any of her stories of the WTC. I can only imagine what she is thinking right now as well; probably thoughts just as you.
I'm not as apprehensive today as I was yesterday; but I can understand your uneasiness about your power outage today.
God bless us all; let's stay United.

My husband has been through his share of personal tragedies, but I have never seen him like this. He is in a state of shock. He says that he keeps reliving the sounds of the blast and the fall of the buildings, and the sight of all those people leaping to their death. I know that what he is going through is nothing compared to what so many others are experiencing.
There is a highschool girl in town who lost both of her parents. My next door neighbor, who has worked there for many years says she has lost at least 30 of her co-workers and friends. She is inconsolable. The president of our school board is clinging to hope that his son is alive and unaccounted for in one of the NYC hospitals. The stories are endless, and I am sickened and grief-stricken.

You're making me remember too Nashcat. I keep thinking how the noise must have sounded and must be echoing in everyone's head who was there. I remember when we were in NY and walking toward the WTC hearing that awful sound of thunder that reverberates off the tall buildings. I had never heard anything like it, really frightening. I thought I wouldn't want to live where I had to hear that then lightening struck the top of one of the towers (can't remember what year it was) I always remembered that sound. Can't imagine what this must have sounded like.

I am a member of several lovely communities…
One of them is my family. Although I live in the Boston area, most of my family is in NJ. One of my brothers had an office on the 100th floor of the WTC. Before I even had time to work myself into a sickening panic about his well-being, my sister called to let me know he was out of town on a business trip. Thank God. Little by little his colleagues are reporting in and a remarkable amount of them reached safety. Thank God again.
Another one is MIT. As an administrator here, I have a front-row seat (something I've never gotten from Bruce, btw) in which to witness the brilliance of our faculty and students. This international community is unified in solving the mysteries that humanity and nature present, and it is never more remarkable than when faced with a problem beyond comprehension. Over these past couple days, there have been countless classes and forums reflecting on this tragedy, but always firmly focused on a continued forward motion. I find that very comforting.
And another one is LiveDaily. The posts on this thread and so many others are so warm and worried and caring and concerned and respectful and reassuring and even victorious. And they all reflect the general tenor of this place, no matter what the circumstances. I'm so fortunate to be here with you all.
Peace,
Mary

This is the first chance I have had to get online since this whole tragedy began. I worked Monday night and was taking a computer class after my shift ended when we got news of what happened. We were asked to go back to the hospital b/c our services were needed. Luckily NY Hospital is uptown and removed from the WTC. We have the Burn center there and that seems to be most of the pt's we are getting.
Looking out the windows of the hopital we could see all the people walking over the 59th street bridge back to Queens...it looked like the Marathon. We see the fighter jets flying over my neighborhood every few hours...we are right by LaGuardia Airport.
I'm glad to hear so many of the LiveDaily crew are safe.

People are just going stupid everywhere
Pro-Islam grafitti hits Melbourne
From AAP
13sep01
PRO-ISLAMIC slogans were found daubed on a building at the west end of Melbourne's central business district.
Graffiti was painted on at least three entrances to the Primus Telecom building on the corner of King and Collins streets sometime before 6am (AEST) this morning.
The words "Victoy (sic) of Islam, Death for Jew + Christ" were painted in white paint on a black background across a building entrance on Collins Street.

It is so good to hear from board members who live/work near the sight--that you are o.k.. I cannot imagine what it must be like, knowing how horrible it seems from far away. I too dug out my old pictures of NYC. Some from 95--shots straight up from the bottom skyward of the WTC's -trees in the foreground to try to get some perspective on the size of the buildings-- and ones from last year's trip for the 7/1 concert: shots from the Brooklyn Bridge with the towers in the background and one with me on the observation tower of the WTC--eery to see my hand on the handrail. It's hard to explain why I wanted to dig those out. It's like a need for some kind of concrete tribute for all those directly involved in the horror. Something to focus on when prayers are said. It's just such an overwhelmingly sad feeling--for lack of better words. I'm far away and seem so emotionally tied to this--as I suppose many others are. Can anyone put it into better words?

I'm so glad that everyone is reporting in. I don't post much but I'm always lurking and keeping up with the gang. I'm way out in Las Vegas, far from danger (if any of us are), and I feel outraged and shocked like all of you. After the initial panic passed, I couldn't stop thinking about how much we've lost as Americans. People, landmarks, history, security, innocence...so much. Big things and little things, and it sounds stupid, but it struck me that I can't imagine how Bruce is ever going to sing Darlington County again (...our pa's each own one of the World Trade Centers...) It seems like they've wrecked even the small parts of our lives that make us happy. It feels a little like when I lost my stepson in a car accident...ripped off, cheated, and helpless.

For nineteen years I've looked over that bridge and saw about the the top 60 floors of WTC. Not in the picture to the right stand the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. Tonight both of the latter stood quietly, unlit as to pay respect to their fallen brothers. I can only offer my prayers to the families who have lost. When I look over that bridge from this day on I will be reminded of all the people who's lives will never ever be the same.

I just came back from the bus stop - putting my 5 year old on her school bus. There are 10 elementary school children who get on at this stop, and I've watched most of them grow up and have known most of the parents for well over 10 years.
One of the fathers eyes were red and teary. It was evident that he had been crying. He's in his late 30's, and about a dozen friends that he went to high school with who worked on the 104th floor in the second tower hit are missing and feared dead.
Last night, at one of the churches here in town, there was an interfaith candlelight service. My husband and I provided the sound for the event which, despite being unadvertised due to time, drew over 500 people. When the pastor asked for people to call out the names of people they knew who were caught in the tragedy, over 30
names were called out. As each name was said, the shock and despair of the crowd grew and grew. One man even passed out, and possibly had a heart attack, during the event.
It seems in this small suburban community of ours (Port Washington, Manhasset, Plandome and Sands Point, Long Island) we may have lost at least 40 to 50 fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, aunts, uncles....friends. I even heard this morning that several of the dads missing called their wives from the 104th floor of the second building after the first plane hit to tell them they were OK and were being evacuated. Then the second plane hit, and there was no hope for those above the plane.
The shock and grief have not peaked yet. I fear we will be hearing a lot more in days to come.
My heart and prayers go out to those of you who have lost loved one or friends close to you.

Checking in. It's all been said. I grew up at the Jersey shore and spent lots of time in and around NYC. I have very fond memories of a few special events that took place at the WTC for me. After the funeral of a family member in upstate New York, my dad and I were driving home to Jersey. As we drove south on the turnpike I, 18 yrs old or so, looked over at the WTC all lit up and said to my dad, 'wow that's really something' or something like that..and he said,'let's go there and have a beer' so we did..we drove into the city parked and went up to Windows on the world and had a Heineken. What a father-son moment that was.
Years later I was living in Hoboken and met a woman I fell in love with. I decided I was going to marry her and surpised her with a special dinner at Windows on the World and proposed to her there.
Two very special memories of happy momnets in my life at the WTC.
God bless America.

One of my fondest memories of the 2000 tour occurred on the top of the World Trade Center:
July 1st...the afternoon of the last concert...BumperWayne's 40th birthday....me, him and mrsports outside on the very top of the building....me and Bump raising a cold beer in honor of that most special b-day...a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky....you could see for miles....
and now....
The photos I took up there have taken on greater meaning in the last three days.

wish now I had joined ya on that day - do remember the night of the mad limo ride (6/16/00) - we drove over to the Brooklyn side and just looked across the river at those two giant towers of light - then the infamous harbor cruise on 6/28/00 - Bump trying to take pics of his building, all of us almost getting kicked off the boat and now..........
well, happy memories anyway

Thousands of miles away out near Seattle, I've been trying to figure how to respond to this thread. As an almost lifelong resident of various places on the west coast, we tend to wonder why anybody would ever want to live near a place such as NYC. I think I now have a better idea why. The courage, energy and support that I see everybody giving is just amazing.
I've traded boots, lost Mariners bets, and corresponded with many of you. I'm so glad to hear so many of my east coast cyberfriends check in OK.

Those who have read the thread "What Once Was..." knows that as of Thursday September 13, 2001 10:15 pm Eastern standard time I will attempt to write a song that hopefully I can get released and I will personally see all the money that the song makes if released will go to the families who have lost. I had tow reletives who got out. Others aren't so lucky. I guess this the only way I can really help. I'm so close to NYC but too far away.

I wanted to say how nice it is to know you are all safe. I work with close to 700 (pre K through 5th grade) children... when you say your prayers please say one for the children. It has been very hard on them. At my school today we did the five min. of reflection...the school was so quite. I listened to the Boss sining This Land... I cryed. Thank you for all the worm thoughts sent our way. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
God Bless you
