1/3/02 - Asbury Park, has just hired a new Development Planners, they didn't feel the last group had the city's best interest in mind. So I guess we are starting to make a difference. Now is the time to step up the campaign. There will be 2 more Town Meeting's before any decisions are made.

We are planning a support rally at the Pony, and a show of support at the final meeting in February. Keep Those Letters and Petitions coming. More news to come very soon!!

A Message from Asbury Park City Councilwoman Kate Mellina
Greetings from....the usual place!

Most of you know that we're working on a beachfront redevelopment plan for Asbury Park right now, and many of you know that the developers would like to demolish the current Stone Pony and relocate it elsewhere in Asbury Park, since they would like to build residential units in that area.

As many of you also know, the Stone Pony is asking people to sign a petition, saying that they want the Stone Pony to stay where it is.

I would like to urge you to sign it this week, if you haven't already, and to ask your friends to sign it, as well. Our new city planners will be doing some high-intensity planning work with our redevelopment partners during the week of January 15-23, and it is important for your voice to be heard before then.

People in town have said that they want to save Asbury Park's heritage along the beachfront, but there is very little left to save: the Paramount/Convention Hall, the Howard Johnson's, Madam Marie's, the Stone Pony, and the already battered Palace and Casino.

I personally don't feel that we can afford to lose any of it and still claim to be the Asbury Park that so many people remember.

Please spread the word.

Thank you,

Kate Mellina

It's fun. It's funky. It's a little bit retro. Cap City Fine Diner features all of your diner favorites– with flair. Where else can you find a slab of meatloaf, piled high with buttermilk chive mashed potatoes and French-fried onion rings, and finished with barbecue gravy? Or our Knife & Fork Chili Dog, loaded with sirloin? And what about our Seriously Big Chocolate Cake – one slice can easily satisfy three people! So go ahead and dig in. Because at Cap City, everything we do is well done.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 7, 2002

“SAVE THE STONE PONY”

A grassroots effort to save the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park from the wrecking ball will get its official kick off during a press conference to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, at the famous night club at Second and Ocean avenues.
The “Save The Stone Pony’’ campaign consists of Stone Pony staff, patrons, and other supporters from around the world who hope to reverse a decision to demolish the club as part of an extensive redevelopment plan slated for the city’s oceanfront area. Officials at Ocean Front Acquisitions- the designated redevelopment company- have announced they intend to proceed with plans to demolish the Stone Pony to make way for condominiums and stores. Ocean Front Acquisitions has the right of eminent domain in the redevelopment zone.
“We hope to convince the redevelopment agency and city officials, especially the City Council, that the Stone Pony should remain in its present location and be spared from the wrecking ball,’’ said Lee-ann Nibbling, chairperson for the “Save The Stone Pony’’ campaign.
Nibbling said the campaign is independent from the Stone Pony itself although the efforts of the group have received the support and endorsement of owner Domenic Santana.
“I respect and appreciate all of the support . I have always realized that such efforts would come forward at the appropriate time- and, undoubtedly, now is that time,” Santana said.
Santana said he is presently under a gag order- agreed upon between his attorney and Ocean Front Acquisitions- not to discuss aspects of the proposed redevelopment that would affect the Stone Pony.
“Therefore, I have little to say publicly about the matter at this time,’’ he said.
Santana acquired the club two years ago after it was closed in 1995 and he has spent about $1 million to purchase and renovate it.
“Save The Stone Pony plans to begin a worldwide media blitz in its efforts to save the club and petitions are already pouring in through our web site, www.savethestonepony.com,” Nibbling said.
Thursday’s press conference will announce efforts and events that will be held in an attempt to save the Stone Pony- including a rally at the club, continuing the petition drive, and a planned protest.
The Stone Pony is known throughout the world as one of the most famous venues for rock ‘n roll and scores of famous acts have appeared at the club since it opened in 1974. Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, Jefferson Starship, Elvis Costello, Peter Frampton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Russell Crowe, and Patti Smith are just a few of the famous acts to perform there.
“We are strongly urging the media to attend the press conference and get the word out about our efforts,’’ Nibbling said.
For more information call Nibbling at 732-262-3971; Stone Pony general manager Eileen Chapman at 732-502-0600, Ext. 13; Anthony Amato at 609-294-1821; or campaign media advisor Don Stine, owner of Antic Hay Books, at 732-774-4590.

Please Post to other meesage boards that you know of - Dominic Santana is standing behinde me watching.

Great press conference today. Bocci pumped up the crowd by talking about how important The Pony is to him personally; Butch, the former Pony owner, talked about its history; Kate Mellina and Don Stine (who is media dude for Save the Pony) explained the background of the redevelopment effort and advocated the creation of a large entertainment zone extending from Second Ave. all the way to Cookman; and Dominec announced that he no longer needs to stay in the background on this, but is stepping forward to join the front lines. "Read my lips -- Hell no, we won't go. No amount of money could make us tear this down."

Bottom line -- the new planners will be holding meetings over the next week or so that will involve advocates of Save The Pony and Tillie, as well as the public, and will be presenting their final proposal Saturday, 1/19, at 10 AM at the Berkely Carteret. The public is invited. Pony supporters should gather at The Pony that morning at 9.

There will also be a rally at The Pony on Wed., 1/16, from 9 to midnight.

Just this afternoon got a phone call from a friend of mine who knows Joe and Domenic, saying that Joe has been contacted by CBS, expressing interest in doing a piece on the Pony and its current situation for 48 Hours. Now that would be some kind of exposure. The shot in the arm, perhaps, we are all looking for. Julie
