View Full Version : You're a genuine New Jerseyan if...

Forgive me if you've already received this "FWD" in your e-mail; based on the conversation on this board I bet even some of the non-natives here will qualify.
You're a genuine New Jerseyan if you recognize or can relate to at least 10 of these:
1. You still call the PNC Arts Center the "Garden State Arts Center" and Brendan Byrne Arena will always be Brendan Byrne NOT Continental Airlines Arena.
2. You've been seriously injured at Action Park.
3. You don't think of citrus when people mention "The Oranges."
4. You know that it's called "Great Adventure," not "Six Flags."
5. You've ordered a hard roll with butter for breakfast.
6. You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
7. You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 am.
8. You remember that the "Two Guys" were from Harrison.
9. You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
10. At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
11. You know what a "jug handle" is.
12. You know that a WaWa is a convenience store.
13. You know that the state isn't all farmland.
14. You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey - there's "The Shore," and you know that the road to the shore is "The Parkway" not "The Garden State Highway."
15. You know that "Piney" isn't referring to a tree.
16. Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs. And you call it a "sub" not a "submarine sandwich" or worse yet, a "hoagie" or a "hero."
17. You remember the song from the Palisades Park commercials.
18. You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
19. You knew that the last question had to do with driving.
20. You know that this is the only "New..." state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try ...Mexico, ...York, ...Hampshire - doesn't work, does it?).
21. You only go to New York City for day trips, and you only call it "The City."
22. You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
23. You consider a corned beef sandwich with lettuce and mayo a sacrilege.
24. In the 80's you wore your hair REALLY high.
25. You don't think "What exit" (do you live near?) is very funny.
26. You know that the real first "strip shopping center" in the country is Route 22.
27. You know that people from 609 area code are "a little different."
28. You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton - that's for out-of-staters.
29. The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
30. You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
31. You can see the Manhattan skyline from some part of your town.
32. You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
33. Every year, you had at least one kid in your class named Tony.
34. You know where every "clip" shown in the Sopranos opening credits is.
35. You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of Willowbrook Mall.
36. You've eaten a Boardwalk cheese steak with vinegar fries.
37. You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally...
38. You've never pumped your own gas.

And Philiadelphian's are "adopted" New Jerseyan's...
We agree with all of the above except we view Manhatten as a day trip and eat hoagies.
We call them subs only down the shore!
And we cross the bridge to have our gas pumped at a cheaper price.
Very cute thread!

You're making me proud!
Here are a few more I've heard and/or thought through the years:
You once said "It smells like New York in here."
You've eaten a porkroll, egg & cheese on a hard roll -- and loved it.
You've pondered..."Maybe basketball would be more popular in NJ if the Nets weren't here."
You've lived through hurricanes, nor'easters and brushfires, but you have never seen a tornado, earthquake, tsunami or volcano.
You can't believe that MTV went to Seaside Heights.
You know that ACME is an actual store, not just a Warner Bros. creation
You have had sex on the beach (not the drink).
You can't understand why there aren't any 24 hour diners in the rest of the country
You know who Uncle Floyd is.

Great list!!
And from a native "609'er" (Atlantic City High School Class of 19-never mind):
The big city to the West is "Philly," never Philadelphia. And Philly is a much cooler place than The City.
The real "White House" has nothing to do with the President or Washington.
The greatest nightclub ever was the Latin Casino, and you went there at least once for New Year's Eve.
You never ask "which Boardwalk?"
It's not the Atlantic City Expressway, it's just "the Expressway."

You're bringing back many memories of my home state. My first Little League team was Little Jimmy's Ices. What else can I add that hasn't been said yet? Oh yeah, it's MINATURE GOLF-NOT PUTT-PUTT! The only Roy Rogers I've seen are on the Turnpike. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is now $3 to cross into Delaware.
Remember Team Texaco? The New Jersey Devils before they changed colors. Rutgers, The State University. The only school where you spend more time on the bus getting to class than you actually do in class. What about Friday night traffic jams on the Parkway to the shore? We always went to LBI. I remember Seaside being called Sleazeside Heights.
I also remember almost everyone in high school driving an IROC, Firebird, or Trans-Am. The "Guidos" drove the newer Trans-Ams, and the "dirtbags" drove the older ones. Only in Jersey could a pair of sweatpants and cut-off sweatshirt be called stylish.
Well, I have to tell a joke now. Hear about the guy who's girlfriend asked him to "kiss me where it smells?". So he drove her to Jersey. http://talk.livedaily.com/docs/smile.gif

I pretended to be a Jersey Girl for four days and loved every minute of it. On June 24th we landed in Newark and drove down to Atlantic City. To my surprise the drive was like go south or north on 169 from Mpls. It was beautiful and very green. I went to Asbury Park since this trip was about Bruce Did the boardwalk stroll, took pictures, went to the Stone Pony and took pictures. Stayed in Toms River. Stay in Atlantic City and drove to Long Branch and took the train to MSG on 6/27 to see Bruce. Met a great guy named Alex from Trenton and his Boss rode the elevator with Bruce and Patti on 6/26. He also had 'If I should Fall Behind' as one of the songs in his wedding. Rode back on the train with tons of Bruce fans from Jersey, it was a great trip. Pumped my own gas in Long Branch. There were about four other people at the station and I think that's why I got to do it. The guy checked on me a few times. Saw tons of deer on the Parkway(I'm thinking I'm in Minnesota). I had people from Jersey ask me if it was cold in Minnesota now. The answer is no, its just as hot and humid here as it was there. Anyway on the 28th we headed for NYC for the rest of our trip. I liked being a jersey girl for a few days and would go back to the shore again. I loved your state, your music, and your shore. Thanks for having me and being so nice......Sue

Grew up in the Mid Hudson Valley area actually (around Poughkeepsie NY, NY's version of "the middies") Jersey was the place to go for those low budget vacations (Palisades Park, the Shore, Cape May) when we couldn't afford to go to Mystic, CT or Cape Cod. Later in life, it was Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ (do they still have the safari park?) and of course, the starkness of the revitalized boardwalk (including the Playboy Casino) of Atlantic City against the poverty and decay of it's inner city. Every time I hear Atlantic City, I see the picture in my mind so clearly. My heart hope it's cleared up some but my head says the street to the west of the boardwalk resorts is still wider than it should be.
On a lighter note, I did purchased a truck in Sussex, NJ once in 1985, thus forever cementing Jersey as major center of commerce.
And who can forget Twisted Sister? Now you know you are a Jerseyean (at least honorary) if you went to see them play.

No one has mentioned Lucy the Margate Elephant!
The worst part of this is you guys are making me remember 4th grade. That's when we got hit with the New Jersey lessons. We actually had a workbook.
Who's seen a concert at Waterloo Village?
Anyone been to Bowcraft Amusements on Route 22? It's really for little kids, I just remember being taken there as a kid.
Talking about really bad Jersey smells--have you ever passed Tuscan at the Union Toll on the Parkway on a really warm day?
Someone mentioned Molly Pitcher. Hate to break New Jersey's bubble on this one, but it's very likely that Molly Pitcher was from Pennsylvania. Most of the Continentals at the Battle of Monmouth were from Pennsylvania. Also, many wives traveled with the soldiers at the time. Most likely, "Molly" was a wife of a wounded soldier from Pennsylvania who started bringing water to her husband, then brought more to the other soldiers.

Hate to break THIS news, but just found:
...Molly didn't start involved with the war, in 1754 she was born on her parents dairy farm in Trenton, New Jersey...
The fact that she was raised in Pennsylvania and married a soldier from the Pa. militia means nothing to me. (But that's just my opinion.)

cd3, I vaguely remember the go-cart track, I was probably more interested in the batting cages then http://talk.livedaily.com/docs/smile.gif. Did you ever play the Bowcraft indoor miniature golf course? That was a trip. I think they had 12 holes downstairs, then you had to go back upstairs for 4. We couldn't find the 13th and 14th holes.
I can also remember stealing free games from the outdoor miniature golf. We'd look like we hit the ball, while one of us would hide next to the "clubhouse", but wedged in where the attendant couldn't see us. We'd tap the ball to the person hiding, and then he'd throw the ball in the free game chute. I can't believe we never got caught!
Also, what the he** is an ice cream bakery? My sister worked for Carvel in college, and I used to ask all the time. If I can remember correctly, Tom Carvel's face kinda looked like a blocked kick. I think Wednesday was Sunda(e) at Carvel.

Ah, Crazy Eddie . . . personified by Jerry Carrol (NYC DJ Dr. Jerry) who used to get pretty wound up in the Crazy Eddie TV commericials but remember, he was just the messenger.
The Crazy Eddie electonics stores (similar to Circuit City, got my first CD player there at the store in Paramus) was very successful early on (they started in the late 70's), then around 1984 or so, stores began closing all of a sudden and by 1989, they were all shut down. Allen, Eddie, and Mitchell (the brothers Antar) were charged with a bunch of fraud and racketeering charges in 1992. If you look at some of the court documents pertaining to the Crazy Eddie IPO in 1984, you start to think they were crazy. A lot of stock transactions that were not quite legal and not well covered up.
Eddie and Mitchell were sentenced to 12 or 13 years in prison and fined over $100 million (Allen was cleared of charges). Eddie tried to run and hide but he was captured in Israel and sent back to the US (a reminder to people fleeing the US to always check local laws before trying to hide out somewhere) to face prision.
As pointed out, Crazy Eddies is back (one store anyway)!
The cleared brother Allen is now acting as a consultant for a new Crazy Eddie's store and their web site (based out of Wayne NJ), both of which are being run by the grandkids of the the brothers.
They are reportedly trying to get Jerry Carrol back as spokesperson but he was burned pretty bad the first time around so we'll have to wait and see if that happens.

Yes, the Raceway Park commercials were really annoying, yet I never thought I'd really ever be reading about them. For the 609'ers, what about the hot rod shows at the Spectrum, Spectrum, Spectrum, Spectrum?
When I go home, the commercials that are really annoying are the ones with that really cute, yet really dumb sounding blonde girl for Salerno-Duane auto dealerships. I've never seen anyone move their head in the ways that she does.
My father had his credit card number stolen at Crazy Eddie's on Route 22 in Union. It's the only time he ever bought anything in there. He bought me a pack of 5 1/4 floppy disks for my old TI99/4A. Next thing he knows, a whole bunch of smut got ordered on his card. It got traced back to a kid that worked at Crazy Eddie. Not only were they criminals, they employed them too.
Weren't the Crazy Eddie commercials done with about the same production quality as the Uncle Floyd show? Wasn't Uncle Floyd on Channel 68 before it became WHT? Now 68 is the Home Shopping Channel. There's an Uncle Floyd reference in a song by another Jersey band called Dramarama. Anyone remember them?

Teenage years spent on the Seaside boardwalk, listening to the rock and roll music at the bumper cars...chasing those factory girls. All night deep sea fishing out of Belmar. NCBrucefan -- I remember that New Jersey-centric 4th grade curriculum! We had to memorize the names of all the counties as well as of silly-named towns like Loveladies. I don't know if they still do that, I suppose I will find out in a couple of years when my son gets there.
Patter -- as a 201-er transplanted into 609-land a few years ago I have for the most part gotten used to the funny accent. But just the other day, I was at the swim club and I heard something that made me turn and stare open-mouthed -- another mom who was behind me had just instructed her child to dry herself off with her "tail."
Zephyrs -- I remember back in college my New-England-born husband (not my husband yet) talking about making a "packie run" like it was really cool, and actually expecting people to understand what he was talking about(and I know he still owes you an e-mail, sorry about that)... and I spent a couple of "wicked awesome" years in New Hampshire but all that clean air and natural beauty got to me and I just had to come home
cd3 -- thanks for the Uncle Floyd links. Gotta love the music on those sites!
Uncle Floyd fans -- I remember watching it on channel 68 out of West Orange. From where I was in Ridgewood (just a few miles away) you could barely make out the picture through the snow. I think it improved somewhat when the station moved to Newark. My brushes with Uncle Floyd greatness included getting a picture on the wall, and the time when Scott Gordon came into the bakery where I worked in high school (where people would ask for a "coffee regular" and not being a coffee drinker - yet - I had NO IDEA what to give them!).
Crazy Eddie fans -- I still have the stereo I got there when I was 16!! I'm not exactly proud of that, but it is my connection to that great cultural icon.

I guess the $3.00 settlement the USFL (thanks NCBruceFan, got my WFL / USFL mixed up a little) won against the NFL in it's antitrust lawsuit didn't cover too many of their expenses.

It is taylor ham http://talk.livedaily.com/docs/smile.gif. Not that many North Carolinians call it that, but they do love their pork products here. They'll take any kind of pork, stick it between two pieces of bread or roll or whatever, and call it a pork sandwich. It's also a can of SODA and ICED tea. I really do miss Jersey corn though. Two people from Clark! Wow. I think more people move from there than actually move there. I graduated AL Johnson HS in 1988. The funniest thing about going there was that no one ever referred to a "ramrod", thanks NaughtySherry http://talk.livedaily.com/docs/smile.gif, as a Johnson in my town. I walked around the U of Delaware with a Johnson Varsity football jacket, and heard funny comments. I guess looking back, it was kind of funny.
Exit 114, Clark always used to play Rahway in the Thanksgiving battle. Then the year before I got to high school, the state made the smaller schools leave the Watchung Conference, and join the Mountain Valley Conference. We played Hillside two years, then were supposed to play Berkeley Heights. They were given the "death penalty" by the NJSIAA for illegal practices. So we played Cliffside Park, then played BH my senior year.
As for funny restuarant names, there's a place called Tar Babys in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The picture on the sign is 1000% more offensive than the Confederate flag.

Magic Rat, you beat me to the punch! I had a prettied-up copy of that RMAS post all ready to go... the funny thing was, the guy who posted it to RMAS seemed surprised that we are perceived that way. Even in a snooty town like Ridgewood (which got a mention in the Preppy Handbook), all the cars outside the high school were camaros, firebirds, or mustangs! And a few years later I had pretty much the same hairdo as Jon Bon Jovi, and held it in place with Stiff Stuff.
Born in Queens (from which we would ride the subway into "the city"), raised off exit 163/165 -- the Thanksgiving football game was against Fair Lawn, and then we would drive to the Fireplace in Paramus to do a little slumming and get into fights. Now I'm off exit 4 (no, not Wildwood, I'm off the Turnpike now), halfway to heaven and just a mile out of Philadelphia, is that the way it goes?

In Atlantic City we called it Taylor Ham but we knew what it really was.
Patter: those rock shows were great. We could only get 1010 in 609 territory late at night. BTW, Cousin Brucie never measured up to Murray the K. Brucie was too much of a hysteric.
young again: Thanks for reminding me of those stupid facts we had to memorize in school. Twenty-one counties! If you were in high school in 1964, everyone got dragged to the A.C. convention hall for the state's tricentennial. There was even a State Song:
"New Jersey! Way back in 1664. New Jersey! You welcomed all men to your shore. New Jersey! You've grown 300 years and more. And still today your future looks bright."
I can't believe I remember it! Where was Bruce wheen we needed him???
Am I the only one who did his first underage drinking at the Opus in A.C.? Now they have the "loosest slots." Then they had the "loosest bouncers."

Very cool thread!
This is what I remember from growing up a 609'r....
Mr. Softee ice cream trucks
The diving horse at the AC Steel Pier
Catching lightning bugs in a jar with holes poked in the lid, then wondering why they died
Riverview Amusement Park
Cherry Hill Mall --- my first one ever
Watching my big brother on Dick Clark's American Bandstand
The Philadelphia Zoo
And, then later...
Working a summer job at the Shore
Really neat field trips -- The White House; Gettysburg; Shakespeare plays at Princeton
Iron Butterfly at The Fillmore East, (with opening band, Led Zeppelin)
Doing 'cid while driving across the Walt Whitman
Ed Schiaky from WMMR playing Bruce
And now...
Returning every 5 years for my high school reunion
Staying in Cape May
Seeing David, my friend since 1955, and his wife Mary, my friend since 1965.
Taking my mom to the cemeteries (yikes!)
Lots and lots of memories, like almost 50 years worth, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Yep - you got the submarine chant right Sis!!!!! (didn't think anyone remembered that but me) - I think I still have my "Submarine race watchin'" card - Murray the "K" and let's not forget "Jackie the K" also.
While I was still in high school I had a part time job working for Murray the "K" at WINS - the first job I ever had. Needless to say, the benefits were great - I got to sit in the studio with him while he did his radio show, meet all his guests (Bobby Darin once took me home in his limosine and then had the limo driver honk the horn real loud as I got out so all the neighbors could see me get out of a limosine - a big deal to me back then), I got to be backstage at all Murray's shows at the Brooklyn Fox and met all the acts and I had the best record collection in town and didn't have to spend a penny - thanks to the WINS record library!!!
But I can't let this thread go by without mentioning and paying tribute to "THE MAN" who brought Rock N Roll to all of us in the Tri-State area - Alan Freed!!!! (wow - I'm really giving away my age now!!!!) He started it all in our area and even had the very first R&R shows at the Brooklyn Paramount (way before Murray did his shows at the Brooklyn Fox) - of course the shows at the Apollo Theater were actually THE FIRST!!!!! God, I think Jocko is still around today - talk about the 'ORIGINAL RAPPER' - Jocko was the BEST!!!!!!
(The line for those 50 and older forms to the left............LOL!!!!!)

114 - I grew up in Middletown. I remember getting up at the crack of dawn to drive to
the Englishtown Auction. At the time it seemed so far away. I now live only 5 miles
from it and have not been there since we moved here. Yes, that big clown face in front of Foodtown...it always gave me the creeps! Is it still there? Many South vs. North Thanksgiving Day Football games. Driving to Krauszers when I got my drivers permit. Going to the Howard Johnson's by Two Guys for dinner on Sun nights. Can't believe that restaurant stayed in business for as long as it did. It is now an Outback.
Flamingo Lane - Another graduate from Montclair State here. So many great memories from there. Many nights at "The Rat" Whenever Glory Days came on we would sing "I'm going down to the "rat" tonight.
And I'm gonna to drink til I get my fill.
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around
thinking about it but I probably will"
billy in LI - Did you ever go to the Turtle Races at Mary's Husbands Pub in Belmar? I still have my winner's t-shirt and many bandannas from there.

What's amazing to me is how much of this stuff DOESN'T change -- we didn't go down the shore when I was a kid (what can I say, my parents were New Yorkers who preferred the mountains), but I just got back from a weekend in Ocean City with the family, and after spending the morning on the beach we had pizza at Mack and Manco's, played a round of miniature golf on the boardwalk, and stopped off for some Kohr's frozen custard. Later on we played in an arcade and went on some rides. So 30 years from now my kids' memories won't be too different from some of what's posted here.
BTW, Ocean City is "dry", which is fine with me, it helps keep it very family-oriented, but you're out there on the beach, working up a thirst in the sun, and every 15 minutes another plane flies overhead carrying a beer ad! That's just cruel if you ask me!

jerseygirlinpa,
You may remember this as a former Clarkite. I grew up right near Esposito's Farm. You know that garage thing on Madison Hill Road? I remember walking up every Saturday to get corn. I have no idea if they grew it themselves, or where they got it from, but it's the best Jersey corn I've ever eaten. They also had good fruit there too.
There was also Schefferstien's down the road a little too, but their stuff didn't taste quite as good. They keep talking about getting rid of the farms and putting in more homes. I hope they don't.
Apple cider donuts are great too!!

NC Bruce Fan,
How funny the things that you remember about Clark! Believe it or not, one of my best friends from ALJ married one of the sons of Esposito's farm. I remember that my parents loved to go there because they gave you 13 ears of corn for the price of 12. I remember Schefferstein's as well. Our family went to St. Agnes Church, and we normally stopped there for watermelon on the way home (or penny candy when I was younger). I grew up on Grove Street - off of Lake Avenue. Do you remember Rotondo's Liquor Store? They recently did a major face lift. My parents still live in Clark and we visit them every few months. Another couple of Clark necessities - Vacarro's bakery for crumb buns and Deli King for the absolute best sandwiches! I love this nostalgia stuff!!

holy s**t steve
haven't thought about claude kirshner's terry toon circus since i was old enough to want to watch it!!!!! jeez...talk about memories, that is one i NEVER would have remembered. of course the movie was million dollar movie with it's theme stolen from the movie "gone with the wind". i used to pray when igot sick as a kid that million dollar movie would have a movie i liked on that week and then i could watch it over and over again. my all time fave was "mighty joe young". they showed it all the time.
and ANDY"S GANG!!!!!!
okay here's the theme song for those of us old geezers who remember this stuff:
i've got a gang
you've got a gang
everybody's gotta have a gang
but there's only one real gang for me...
good 'ole andy's gang
then came this (not sung)...
yes sir it's andy's gang...with that mystical magical froggy the gremlin (then froggy comes out and says) "hiya kids..hiya hiya..."
oh god...this is too much fun....

I JUST FOUND THIS THREAD & I LOVE IT!!!
Especially the mosquito truck, the gum tree at Great Adventure, Rocky Horror Picture Show in NB, Crazy Eddies, Carvel
and mostly,
PORK ROLL !!
It was always Pork Roll to us, never Taylor Ham.
I grew up in Spotswood and someone mentioned an all you can eat shrimp buffet...I can't remember that one!
Anyone ever go to the Ground Floor? And there was another live music bar in that area but the name escapes me...

My parents have Giants season tix in section 206. When I would bring friends they would ask where section 109 was.
Does anyone remember Joe Piscopo playing the "I'm from Jersey" guy on Saturday Night Live? I thought it was funny when he said his food always tasted better at the chemical plant.

I just want thank everyone for all the great memories.
By the way, Bob McCallister was not the original host of Wonderama. It was Sonny Fox, and he was far superior!
Did anyone ever go to Wild West City? I remember going there on a class trip in 3rd grade. It's a re-creation of a old Western town with a cowboys having a shoot-out in front of a saloon.
