No, that's not what my white bread self would be yelling to cheer Snoop Dogg in a footrac, or me shooing away Macauley Culkin.

It was, in fact, one of my first and favorite children's book. I saw it in a box at my parents' house and reverted back to age 3.

http://www.edutainingkids.com/reviews/bkgodoggo.jpg I was just so glad the red dog finally liked the pink dog's hat!

Do you have favorites that stick out in your mind?

My favorite was Hats, Coats, Cows, and Goats (can't seem to find a picture). I had memorized it by age 4 from my family reading it to me every night. Strangely, I still remember snipets.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

That and the Bearenstein Bears "B" Book

My dad says he still has those two books memorized from reading them to me so many times as a little kid. :D

It seems to be a Dr. Suess theme - mine was The Sleep Book. My mom used to read it to me every night.

Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod

Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod, one night sailed off in a wooden shoe;
Sailed on a river of crystal light into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going and what do you wish?" the old moon asked the three.
"We've come to fish for the herring fish that live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we" said Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod.

The old moon laughed and he sang a song as they rocked in the wooden shoe.
And the wind that sped them all night long ruffled the waves of dew.
Now the little stars are the herring fish that live in that beautiful sea;
"Cast your nets wherever you wish never afeared are we!"
So cried the stars to the fishermen three - Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod.

So all night long their nets they threw to the stars in the twinkling foam.
Then downward came the wooden shoe bringing the fishermen home.
'twas all so pretty a sail it seemed as if it could not be.
And some folks say 'twas a dream they dreamed of sailing that misty sea.
But I shall name you the fishermen three - Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod.

Now Winkin' and Blinkin' are two little eyes and Nod is a little head.
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies is a wee one's trundle bed.
So close your eyes while mother sings of the wonderful sights that be.
And you shall see those beautiful things as you sail on the misty sea
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three - Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod.

I also really liked Ferdinand . . . the story of the bull who just liked to sit under the cork tree and smell the flowers. :)

My Grandfather was the BEST story reader in the world to me. He read Winkin Blinkin and Nod and Little Black Sambo so much to his own kids, that by the time he got to us, there were no books. It was just from memory. I miss Gramps.

The Kingston Three (featuring Mama Cass before she was Mama Cass) sang that Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod song. Quite well too.

The Little Red Hen. My poor father had to read this every single night. He would try to leave parts out to shorten the story but since I had it memorized I would let him know if he missed something...even if it was a simple 'the' or 'an'.

I still love hearing my father read...so does Little Man.

I just remembered another favority.....Coon Holler.

After mentioning Coon Holler I went over to Amazon.com to see if you could still purchase Coon Holler. I was amazed at what I found. A used paper back copy is selling for $30+. I'm now wondering how much our hardcover copy would be worth.

Potato is kind. I was thinking human liver or ambulatory turd.

The top hat is because I'm fancy.

Ambulatory Turd is such an outstanding name for a band...or laxative. Whichever.

Garnet, was the Disney worker playing a part of a character? Or was that her real hair? I'm thinking Snow White goes blonde or something...

Sunny's book cover is the absolute best. I can't wait for her busy body self to pop on the boards so she can change her avatar.

garnet
Aug 22nd, 2002, 12:56 AM
Sunny's is cute. It's sort of Pippi Longstockingish...

No, the Disney worker didn't play a character. She worked in reservations. It was her real hair.

Speaking of characters, I always wanted to be one. I thought it would be kind of fun. They had strict height requirements though. I wasn't short enough and I wasn't tall enough.

I met this girl who played the part of Eeyore in the Magic Kingdom and they actually send the people to a special class to learn the mannerisms of the character and also how to write like them for when they sign the kiddie's autograph books. How are the kids going to know the difference? Did we see Eeyore or any other character for that matter write anything? Is a kid going to look at the autograph and say "You're not the real Eeyore...this isn't Eeyore's handwriting?"

On another note, I had an upset guest tell me one day that she and her kids had gone to the Kingdom that day and the characters were quite rude to them. WTF! They aren't allowed to talk or anything..did Mickey flip them the bird or something?

O.k....enough rambling. Me thinks I've had too much Cokie Cola before bedtime.

MJ
Aug 24th, 2002, 11:09 PM
I love the avatars....I'm more of a horse laugher than a giggler though...just so you know...*giggling*...

Back to the book question....I'm not really sure if anyone read stories to me as a kid...we were the poorest of poor and didn't have many toys,books or anything for that matter....but we did survive that period in our life(my parents were only 20 and 16 when they married so things were tough back then)

Books that I enjoyed reading to my children were Doctor Seuss and also a club I joined with Sesame Street characters in them.I think the kids all time favorite though(and they had it memorized) was "Are You My Mother"....I think I'll make them listen to it again some night......
