I found a site with 80 questions about the 80s. How about something on topic again? I'll post 'em 5 at a time and when we get all five, the next five can go up.

1. What was the British equivalent of "We Are The World?"

2. Name six members of the Brat Back

3. What Liverpool band popularized the Doors' "People Are Strange?" in the 80's?

4. Who had the trademark saying "Nanoo Nanoo?"

5. What was the original name of Duran Duran?

2. Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Anthony Michael Hall (or Robert Downey Jr.)

4. Mork

NikDC

Robert Downey, Jr., according to the key, not considered Brat Pack. Anyone else want to pick up the last two?

Yay on the others.

#3, I believe, was Echo and the Bunnymen . . . .

I can't believe that I can't remember Duran Duran's original name. :o This is going to drive me nuts until I remember!

MerrySunshine
Sep 17th, 2002, 09:42 AM
How I wish a fellow Durannie would appear . . . . I seem to remember that Nick and John started the band/a band originally and that band's name was some initials. Let's face it, I didn't pay all that close attention to the articles in TigerBeat, only the photos. ;) :p

vester

2. Judd Nelson and Demi Moore?

MerrySunshine

2-Mare Winningham

vester
Sep 17th, 2002, 10:18 AM
You know I also typed Judd Hirsch

And this is what I found about Duran Duran:

Duran Duran's original name is Duran Duran. John and Nick allegedly performed under the moniker RAF (which means Royal Air Force), but this "band" did not include any of Duran Duran's first-album line-up. The name Duran Duran is taken from the film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda.

Excellent, V. Getting them both right.
And Mer for the Echo and the Bunnymen.

Next 5...

8, Name any of the Newberry Award Winning books from the 80s.

9. Who was the leader of the Transformers?

NikDC

#8 - The Polar Express?

NikDC
Sep 17th, 2002, 12:03 PM
Chris, so very close. The Polar Express is indeed an award winner but it won the Caldecott Medal for children's picture book in 1986. The Newberry would be more young adult.

*Hint: at least two that I know of were made into movies--think Hallmark Hall of Fame*

MerrySunshine
Sep 17th, 2002, 12:05 PM
Sarah Plain and Tall is the only Hallmark Hall of Fame movie I can think of, and I don't think that's a Newberry book. ;)

How about Are You There God It's Me Margaret? (Another guess, but hey! Even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while. :p)

9. Optimus Prime was the Autobot leader and Megatron led the Decepticons

NikDC
Sep 17th, 2002, 12:37 PM
And Sarah, Plain and Tall is a correct answer- 1986. Jacob Have I Loved was another that I remember seeing the movie of and reading the book. It was 1981. The Westing Game from '79 is also another GREAT book if you haven't read it. Oddly enough, Ky, Anne isn't on that list. I guess it was written before Newberrys started in the 40s?

And iggy is right on our non-literary question.

iggy
Sep 17th, 2002, 02:44 PM
Fig Boot was most definitely a character...he was the little dinosaur thing that looked like it made big scary footprints but it was actually the shape of his tail and butt as he hopped around. Why do I retain such information?

Glam: "Hair metal" from the eighties, mainly due to image. While almost always razor-sharp in riffs and production, occasionally simplistic in musical format. Topics quite often top out with girls, sex, and money. Despite all of this (or perhaps because of it?), still given a bad rap--there is a lot of splendid metal that arose from this genre"

43. Celibacy?

NikDC
Sep 18th, 2002, 07:57 AM
The correct answer for 43 is in fact masturbation, according to the answer key. News to me.

According to one article : "Over in the States, "Turning Japanese" was deciphered as a paen to masturbation - more specifically the Oriantal[sic] - looking facial distortions one pulls in the moment of climax (so I'm reliably informed). Fenton is characteristically reticent on such matters. "It means whatever you want it to mean," he says, before admitting: "I wrote it as a love song. But when I went to America everyone said to me, "Is it about wanking?" In interviews, I'd say alternatively, "Yes it is", and "No, it's not". It could be about a lot of things. I just woke up with that phrase in my head. It's just an image which captures what that song was all about. But, no it wasn't intended to be about wanking at the time. What surprised me was that the Americans thought it was an English phrase!""

The other answers are all correct.

Mars

Educational Note: All planets that are not Earth are henceforth known as "Mars." Of course, this still makes me wrong if the answer is, actually, "Earth."

I qualify my statement. There's a time and place for cheating....like when you're the sole person responsible for an answer and money rides on it.

That said besides the fact that I was your lifeline because I know everything already

I got off from work early and the prison is on lockdown... so I have time to answer some questions!

Now... the answer to Nik's Robotech question:

The singer was Min-Mei... but I don't think she died! She was Rick Hunter's fling. All I remember was that Rick's step-brother died. His name is Roy Folker... and his girlfriend was Claudia (the first interracial couple I've seen in Japanese Animation). Does that answe the question?

Vince Clarke then formed Erasure."

Sep 24th, 2002, 07:25 AM
Ewok Adventure was first, and these two kids were being helped by Wickett to find their parents, being held hostage by a midget witch and a giant spider.

Battle for Endor was against these big things that looked like the sand skiff guards. All the family was killed except the little cutusey "I wanna be Shirley Temple" girl. At the end she befriends an old dude and his speedy pet/friend and they adopt her and take her off Endor.

Scary, huh?
