What an awesome night at the Stone Pony! It was just like the old days. There was an electricity in the air, packed house and everyone knew Bruce would be playing.
He came on at 1:30 a.m. and played until 3:15 a.m. (the bar was supposed to close at 2 a.m.!) He played with Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers. In addition to may of Joe's songs he did Murder Inc., Ramrod, Light of Day, I Don't Want to Go Home and at the end all the musicians came up to do Twist and Shout. Patti came up at the end also.
One of those special nights that will go down in the history of great nights in Asbury Park. A new one for the millenium!
Bruce seemed to have a lot of fun. At the end of the show after the bar cleared out, Bruce came out to the back bar with Patti and Joe Grushecky. He wouldn't sign any autographs but he did take pictures and shook hands with people.
I got a handshake and took my first photo with him!Something I will cherish forever. Just a special night.
Know a lot of other board people were there and they witnessed a super evening.
Thank you Bruce!
Stan
PS Also in attendance were Dave Marsh and his wife Barbara Carr. Kevin Buell, and Terry Magovern.

About the only thing that we who weren't there can take from this is this: pray for something to happen in 2001 . . . 'cause it looks as if Bruce still is at the top of his game . . . !

I can't wait for those of you who were there to tell all! Take your time and include all the details, so that those of us who are experiencing it vicariously can fully torture, I mean, enjoy ourselves.

Muddy, you are the eternal optimist, and I am hoping and praying right along with you!

thanks guy!!!

The Legendary Stone Pony...Asbury Park. A benefit for Parkinsons Disease. The event started at about 7, but I didn't get there until about 11. I was really interested in seeing some of the later bands, but I had planned on getting there earlier. Oh well. As I approached The Pony, I noticed people outside, unable to get in. The event was a sell out.

Within 5 minutes of being in the bar (before I had my first beer in my hand), a friend told me that Bruce was there. The rumor spread throughout the night. A friend was in the back and saw him, someone said that he had prepared a setlist with Joe Grushecky, his guitar was there, his guitar tech was there, etc.

Marah was one of the bands on the bill. When they came on stage, Bruce came out to watch them. Patti was sitting at a table near by, so she joined him by the soundboard. We were standing not too far away and I noticed he was wearing a Dolphins hat. After Marah's set ended, he walked past me and I said something about the hat to Mike Given. I was hoping for a Yankee hat, or maybe a Giant hat, but definitely not a Dolphins hat.

After a long delay, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers hit the stage about 1:30. They played two songs and in the middle of the second song, the crowd started to buzz. Bruce was standing about 10 feet from us, watching the band. As the song ended, he made his way towards the stage. Joe introduced him and there he was, back on the stage at The Pony after a five year hiatus that included a time when the bar was closed. Bruce's first appearance in
the new Stone Pony.

The initial set was about an hour and fifteen minutes. Mostly Grushecky songs, some which he had co-written with Bruce. From memory and not in order, I remember Never Be Enough Time, Homestead, Diddy Wa Diddy, Walking with the King, Everything's Gonna Work Out Fine, and I know I am forgetting others. During those songs, Bruce played guitar and sang some amazing back up. The set did include a great Murder Incorporated, and closed with a raucous
Ramrod (absolutely amazing) into Light of Day. I still can't get over how much fun Ramrod was. He even said "Big Man" where the sax solo normally is. However, he took the solo himself on the guitar.

After that, Joe Grushecky called all of the other musicians who had played during the night up on stage. He also called up Patti. Once she got on stage, Bruce gave her a proper introduction. Joe then started into a very weak version of Twist and Shout. As you could feel it wrapping up, Bruce took over. He said, "Hey band, you ready to take it to another level? You ready to take it to the key of C? OK...watch me..." He then launched back into
the song, really started it over. His guitar solo to restart the song energized everyone on stage and in the bar. He took over. He sang lead vocals and was directing the band. It was the best Twist and Shout I have ever heard. He called over a bunch of other singers to take the lead vocals at different points, and then called over Bob Benjamin (the organizer of the event who happens to suffer from Parkinsons) to sing back up. Great gesture.

Joe then finished the show with a weak version of I Don't Wanna Go Home. The only saving grace was Patti's back up. Bruce seemed to want to jump in, but it looked like he didn't want to step on Joe's toes (again).

The show ended around 3:15. Bruce played for about an hour and a half. At one point, I said to Mike that he was just head and shoulders above everyone else on stage and he was. He was really amazing. Well over 10 songs in all, again mostly Grushecky songs. I decided to walk out the back door because it was closest to my car. It is also the door that leads backstage (long story, you have to know the bar). Sure enough, Bruce was walking in the
door as I was walking out. I didn't want to bother him (which a bunch of other people were), so I just stuck out my hand and said, "Great set...thanks." To which he replied "Thanks."

So that's my story. Right place, right time, great night. Sorry if this is a little incoherent, but it's now 4:15 and I am very tired.

Thanks for listening,
Jeremy

What a night... pictures didn't come out well but I'll get them up in a few minutes. As stated above WOW, have goosebumps up my spine when he hit the stage. Glad to see so many friends there last night. Mrs G. didn't believe me when I walked in on cloud nine this morning with news that the promise was delivered. Bruce left the stage at 3:30am played about 1hr and 20 minutes. Crowd was exausted but happy.

OH MY GOD!!!! I was floored when Bruce took the stage, although I knew he was in house and we all knew he was going to take the stage, it was still an unbelievable feeling when he actually stepped out into the spotlight. He was (as you can see) was wearing soft black demin jeans, black boots, a blue demin shirt, and of course the Dolphins Hat!!!! Gotta love a man who loves the Dolphins!! Anyway, Billy and I had great spots right near the right side of the stage and GeeBoss was not far behind us! Oh Gee, sorry about moving in on your spot....Bruce took leads from the Houserockers lead guitarist and often took a solo jam. He, as always, played with a passion that would make anyone weak in the knees....Billy had another great NYPD sign and to see the look on Bruce's face when he read it was pricelss, I really hope THAT picture comes out. Philly and Janie99 joined the front crew not long into the set which added such a great feeling of togetherness!! I am not going to repost what songs he sang because it was already mentioned, but Bruce looked to be having a great time...It was just so unreal!!! Last night's show takes my total up to 50!! and that was the first time I had EVER seen him up so close!!! What a great end to a crappy day!! Strolled into my house at around 4am and I am still on cloud nine!! For all the ladies, Bruce's butt looked so good last night that when I was on stage with Billy during the encore song I just wanted to rush over and pinch it!! But I refrained..it wasn't easy but had to be done!! To all that were there last night, thanks for making it a great night...it was so wonderful to see everyone again, I love hanging out with you all!! meet you further on up the road...gypsyangel AKA Rosie!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

Well home by 4:30...up at 6:30...off to work & here's last night again as close as I can remember...

OK, here it is....We got there around 9:30 Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan came on shortly after, first time we'd seen them but had heard from friends that they were real good , which they were. Next up Willie Nile joined them on stage & did a couple of his songs. One of the girls we sat with on 6/29/00 MSG had told us about him & she was right....he's a pisser...funny, nuts, crazy...would reccomend seeing him too.
HEY... I'm building up to the good part...so bear with me.
Next up...SamHill...we've seen them half a dozen times & they're OK, but let's move on....It's somewhere around midnight and they had announced earlier that Bobby Bandiera would be the special guest appearing...nice diversion, but me thinks me seen a BRUCE, tells the wifey this & she tells me I'm nut's....yeah I am, but me still thinks me seen him...oh well, probably just a wishful halucination or something...doubtful after 2 beers, but hey, let's just enjoy the show. Next up....Marah...(as featured in the last issue of "Backstreets". They cooked!! Great band & the lead singer seems to have a Steven Tlyler-ish vocal style going for him. Well we had firmly planted ourselves by the post next to the front bar...easy access to the bar & 15-20 feet from the stage.... the only pitfall was a lot of foot traffic between sets, but a little less crowded than the corner of the stage, where we had started (& were for the last Stone Pony outing). Think I spotted GEEBOSS on the way to the restroom, but I'm not a "hey I know you" person, so I'll just consider him spotted. Doctor T was wearing that coonskin cap & managed to wake up my wifes foot on a trip to the bar, was polite & appologized, but again none of that "I know you" bull'''', not that there's anything wrong with that, but just didn't feel like a "I know you from the internet" conversation, it was too crowded, just keep it moving. OK, enough mindless drivvel (sp.)....Now for the main attraction!
Grushecky & his band (minus the usual guitar plyer with the bandana) take the stage.. after a little hokey pokey...let's get this show going BS Joe introduces "New Jersey's fovorite son"....Mr BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!!
Sporting a blue cap & denim shirt, Bruce takes the stage...The crowd IS LOVIN' IT!! BRRRUUUUUUCCCCEEEEEE!!!!! Well, they do a bunch of Grushecky tunes, some of which, Bruce co-wrote with Joe...among them & not in that order: Brand New Cadillac, Pumping Iron, Talking To The King, Everything's Going To Work Out Right & Down The Road Apiece. Bruce did backup vocals on the Grushecky tunes, but was ripping it up on the guitar, I also noticed when he changed guitars, that his regular guitar tech with the blonde hair & mustache was along for the ride. For you ladies, who are morer visually oriented than me, Bruce was also sporting the new "stache". He seemed like he was having a real good time & is still at the top of his game! Well we were also treated to a great rendition of Murder Inc. that for me showed the potential of Joe G. & his band to just rip it & plain ROCK OUT...Punch it Margaret, we're goin' for a ride! They did a nice job on Ramrod, although I missed seeing Max...I think he just lights up when the do that one! They ran into Light of Day done more in a Grushecky's stlyle than Bruce's, but great none the less.
We got Joe's somewhat slower & more subdued version of I Don't Want To Go Home., hey, I'm not knocking it, it just wasn't the raucious version I saw Southside do last month. Finally they got all the bands up on stage & did a version of Twist & Shout that started out a little slow & just grew....About the time you thought they were done, Bruce calls out to take it up a notch in the key of C....And they smoked that mother!!!
WOW, it's nights like that that make being 35 minutes from the Stone Pony worth all the rest of the traffic & hassle we have to deal with here in Jersey! If you couldn't already tell, I think we had a GOOD TIME! THANKS BRUCE!!

It's nights like that, that make New Jersey the greatest place in the world to live....despite all the traffic. :D

What a Night! Gee, I can't look at anymore of those pictures that didn't come out that good(tongue in cheek of course). It would have been a great night just being able to hang out with the cast of characters from Live Daily. Add to that the fact that we were there for a good cause. Then to have Bruce put on a Rock Clinic, that's enough to make me Twist and Shout. I have to think Billy's shirt is someday destined for the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. Here's hoping everybody got home safe. There are alot of stories from last night. I'm waiting for "Alley at the Snack Bar" so come on Alley let's here it if you landed yet.

WHAT A NIGHT!

The rumors we flying, but I kept my cool till someone pointed out Bruce's guitar tech. The heart started pumping, the booze stopped - no way I do a bathroom run, and then to turn and see Bruce standing in the crowd..........thank you Loose Ends!!

This was Rock & Roll at its best. Danny White, Willie Nile and Joe D'urso were awesome!! I actually enjoyed Danny White so much that I bought a CD. Then to hear Joe G live for the first time ........THEY ROCK! Of course the temp guitarist didn't hurt. Bruce tried real hard to play a backup role, but all that ended with Murder Inc. Then to hear Ramrod.....AWESOME!!

It was great to meet more of the LD "family", and see friends from the tour. You guys are great. I just wish we could do it more often. Bruce, are you listening?

I must confess that while I wanted to see Joe G and the Stone Pony, I was really there for one reason. Faith was rewarded last night, and I for one will NEVER forget it.

GEEBOSS,
I sure hope my pictures come out!

My first instinct is to say 'I hate you all!' but I know that is the furthest from the truth - I'm just jealous!
For all the years I lived in Jersey, I never got to see Bruce inside a bar because I was too young.
That's not to say I never saw him - just not on the same side of the glass, you see.
Thanks for the photos Gee! :D
Come on and show us more - I know many of you must

Hey all …

Like Billy said “DAMN IT WAS AMAZING”. I cannot even explain the feeling!

I am still in the numb mode. Last night was a great show of togetherness all around. I couldn’t have shared such a special night was better people (Alley, Gypsy, BillyLI, Janie99, FireRich7, All That Heaven Will Allow, DocT, PhillyFan and Hubby, Thundrrds, Dirty Annie, Bronx Darren, Gee, Dhenise, Scoot, LooseEnds and Bruce Juice, JukeBox, Dredk (forgive me if I forgot anyone)). You people rock! Let’s do it again real soon … might someone’s birthday be coming up? (like we really need a reason).

By the way … Billy and Gypsy … you looked MAH VE LOUS on stage with Bruce.

Gee … thanks for the pictures

Alley … have you washed your face yet?

I must, however, take a minute to thank that security guard at the Pony (whose name I don’t even know) who I will remember the rest of my life.

I had left the infamous “Snack Bar Area” to check out one of the bands and the security guard tapped me on the shoulder and told me I should have never left the spot where I was previously standing. OK … thought he was nuts or had the wrong person. Let it go for a few minutes until my curiosity got the better of me and I returned to the back bar area. He called me over to the door and kicked open the door just enough so that I could see DA MAN himself hanging out having a beer. Pretty cool … until the security guard said “Go to the Snack Bar Window”. I looked at him and said “Snack Bar is Closed” … he said “Not serving food right now” (nodding to the left). To my surprise … they were serving BRUCE. Right smack in front of me … all by his lonesome. Took full advantage of the opportunity and went over to chat. After a few minutes he autographed my program (sorry Stang) and got a handshake. That, of course, made my day! Ran over to the security guard and gave him a BIG KISS.

After Bruce took the stage … Patty was behind me and I chatted for a bit (but to be honest my attention was more on her husband at the time).

To make a long story short … the memories of last night will always be in my mind and heart … but the “party favor” is already displayed in my living room … a framed program from the “Light of Day” benefit adorned with the signatures of both Mr. and Mrs. Springsteen.

Alley is probably still in la la land. Last I saw her it was about 3:50 a.m. by the Snack Bar. She had asked Bruce for an autograph ... he declined ... but kissed her on the check instead. The look on her face was priceless! However, we did share quite a moment which I neglected to mention earlier ... Bruce took off his shirt to change and there he was nekkid from the waist up. Alley thought this should not be seen by too many others and Bruce should have his privacy so she took off her sweater and tried to cover up the view (after we stared - of course).

Very condensed version of last night...

Night totally ROCKED!! Great bands and Bruce was the sweetest icing to an already perfect cake! I was about 3 rows from him for about the first 45 minutes but decided breathing was more important at that point so left the floor. Went to the back bar area and who should be standing by my things but Terry MacGovern! Only way for Bruce to get from Point A to Point B was past me. I was a little hesitant but knew I was never going to get another opportunity. He looked at me and I asked for his autograph. He said sorry no. I said ok then felt his hand on my arm and figured he had changed his mind. He leaned over and kissed my cheek then walked away. I looked at my friends and they all nodded...Yes, alley, Bruce just kissed you! I was ready to die at that point.
Little later I was sitting in front of a serving window and someone handed me a camera. Said Bruce was shirtless right behind me. I said no way, took the camera and turned to take the picture. I couldn't do it. Said sorry to Bruce and turned back around. Someone made a comment and I took off my sweater to cover the window. Which lasted all of a milli second. Bronx Darren appeared from nowhere applying for Max's job and then Domenic, the Stone Pony owner was back there talking to Bruce. He saw me sitting there with my postcard and motioned for me to ask Bruce to sign it. I explained what happened earlier and that I was quite happy. He grabbed the card and said "Bruce, I'd like you to meet someone" He then went on to tell about our get togethers and how we tie them into various fundraisers. Bruce asked me a few questions about some of the fundraisers, made a comment about his fans doing that and then THANKED ME!!! That floored me!
He proceeded to sign the card and handed it back to me.
Someone mentioned they had gotten pictures but I can't remember who said it sooooo, if you happen to be reading this....PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!
Slept for all of two hours, saw the most perfect sunrise over the ocean, looked at the postcard again and came home. Unfrigginbelieveable!!
One comment on Bruce last night...he looked well rested but was very energized on the stage. Saw Patti in a different light. Not sure if it changes my band opinion of her but you can see she truly supports her husband and he definitely loves her. Least that was my take on the interaction I saw between them. Think he needed the family time. Whatever it takes, Bruce darlin...just don't leave us too long!!!

Thanks all~

What can I say about last night that hasn't already been said...AWESOME, AWESOME,AWESOME..What a night !
A dream come true, seeing Bruce at a Jersey Bar, but not just any bar THE STONE PONY !!

I First spotted Bruce sitting at the Bar, drinking a Miller lite. Then he moved to the back bar and into a trailer out there, he came out and I was right next to him, I didn't have the nerve to say anything so I just touched his arm.
I got a few decent pictures , if I can find someone with a sanner I'll post them.

I was to the left of the stage about 4 people back when Bruce took the stage. Geeboss & Janie99 graciously made room for me and I was up front .Thank you dear friends !!

What made this night so special was of course that Bruce was there, but also that I got to share this night with so many friends from this board..Alley, Janie99,Scoot,GeeBoss,Billy LI,Janiegirl,Firerich, DirtyAnnie,DoctorT,Gypsyangel, Bronxdarren, Lightningshack and others who's names I'm sure i forgot to mention.
Thanks to all and of course Thanks to Bruce for one hell of a night !!! I'll be floating on this cloud for quite some time ;)

Love,
Philly

You guys are incredible. I'm in awe of how well you all take care of each other. And I'm so glad Joe Grushecky's manager sent along the show info in the first place so the folks close enough to go could get a shot at tickets.

WOW!!! I finally had a chance to read all these posts about this amazing night. Thanks GeeBoss for all the fantastic shots and to everyone for sharing their night with those of us who could not be there. I am kicking myself now because I had to choose this date to have a 40th bday party for my husband. His birthday was the 2nd and while I was in the beginning planning stages of it I was going to have it on the 4th and then I heard that this benefit show would be on Sat the 4th so I decided to have the party on the 3rd and go to the Pony on the 4th. Then once it was all set, restaurant booked, deposit given, etc I find out the show is on Fri, 11/3. UGH!!!!!!! Anyway, I'm so happy for all of you who were lucky enough to be there and your stories helped me feel like I was almost there (sort of).

Alright... now that I can stand back.. get some perspective on the night's events...all I can say is Holy FREAKIN SH%T. All the talk about Bruce is one thing and you guys did a beautiful job of describing what took place. But the thought that ran through my mind coming back on the GSP with an idiot smile plastered on my face was this. The people from this board are THE BEST. The coolest thing ever is to see the look of delight on everybody's face when Bruce came out.Dr.T , absolutely beaming(Thanks for pinching me to prove it was for real.Rich thanks for the strickly platonic neck massage,Scoots, again thanks for the company, the ride, and the present of the Charlotte Boot(We should all have such goodies in our trunks)and Billy, always constant ,always there. And to the woman,Thunderroads,Philly,Beth,Both Janies, all Janies,Rosie and Alley...If any man wanted to see a reallly content look in a women's eyes, all they had to do was look at you girls!!!Blown away by everyone's coordinated efforts.Like a swat team you guys moved. Stolen set list, pilfered Bruce beer bottle.... God it warms my heart.Best images of the night and there were many good ones( Philly flushed with delight,Rosie dancing,T bopping)Alley slumped against the stove with a sweetest hangover(she don't wanna get over) and D. talking to Bruce real cool like he was ordering fries. Man If I had my camera!!!!Love to you all and I don't throw that word around often.I mean it!!!~Annie P.S. Loose Ends,Brucejuice, Dan,Ace and all the lake people nice seeing you and anybody else!!!!

As I sit here now reading the posts and seeing the pictures it has finally started to sink in. I saw Bruce at the Stone Pony on Friday night... HOLY MOLY!!!!

I (along with Scoot, Philly and hubby Dan) moved from our spot at the back bar kind of early (DAMN!!!) because we wanted to get a good spot just in case the rumors were true. Thanks to Billy and GEE for letting all of your friends move in on your table. The best part about being in that spot for me was not so much how close to Bruce we were (that helped of course) but that we were all together!

Philly and her husband took a walk between sets. I remained feet glued to the spot.. it was starting to get crowded and pushy up there. Then, a few songs into the Joe D'Orso set, Philly taps me on the shoulder and says "You have to come back here NOW!" The girl next to me agreed let me back in and off I went with Philly and Scoot. I caught a glimpse of Bruce and Patti headed for a trailer out back and couldn't believe what I was seeing. HE was really here and HE LOOKED VERY GOOD!!!!

I waited just a couple of minutes for him to come back through. I was in awe when he passed me - I was too stunned to say anything at that point. He was stopped on his way back into the bar by someone so I took the chance to get ahead of him and went to stand on the ramp from the outside area to the back bar and wait. By this time he seemed like he wanted to keep moving. Patti on the other hand was chatting with everyone.. really seemed to be enjoying the contact with the fans. Not that Bruce wasn't... he just wanted to keep moving. My turn was finally here, he was headed towards me. But he wouldn't look up and I didn't want to intrude too much. As he brushed by me (- and he did! you know how people brush by you in a crowded bar! Yikes!) I put my hand on his shoulder and said "Good to see you Bruce!" He didn't look me in the eye (darn it!) but he sort of shouted "hey!" (as in "Hi!" not as in get your hand off me...) over his shoulder at me. It all happened so fast and I just remember looking back and seeing Scoot and Philly and we were all standing there like it was some kind of dream, looking at each other like ... DAMN!!! (thanks billy for finding the word to define that feeling so completely!) Phillyfan - I can never repay you for coming to get me and making me move when you did! Thank you my friend.

I decided not to track him through the bar.. even though I really wanted to. Back to our spots as quickly as possible. It was pretty tight up there by this point but hey, we're all friends.. and if we weren't before - we are NOW!

Joe Grushecky came on and did a song or two then introduced "New Jersey's favorite son..." and well, you know the rest. It was AWESOME! Just .... DAMN!!! The looks of sheer joy on everyones faces, the high fives, DocT and I pinching each other every 5 minutes and saying "yeah, we're really here!", the dancing, the mayhem, the friendship... and BRUCE!!!

To be that close, in that setting and watch him work was a dream come true for me. I'm not a musician.. not even a little bit.. though he seemed to be following the other guitarists lead - maybe he didn't know all of the materal that well. But his presence took over the whole scene... because he's Bruce, yes. But his approach, his energy and passion are just that knotch above the rest. You can feel it, it's there. If there was ever any question as to why some of these other very good artists haven't succeeded the way he has, I now have my answer. It's crystal clear to me... You've all read about his restarting "Twist and Shout" at the end. Unbelieveable. A completely different song - and the crowd went NUTS!

DocT is the winner of the 'reality check of the night' award by simply stating "Yep, it's 3am, we're dancing at the Stone Pony to Bruce LIVE!!!!"

I cannot say enough that what made this night extra extra special for me was the people from this board and Greasylake who were there to share it. Gee and Billy... thank you again for the great spot. A special thanks to Gee for giving up his spot at the stage so Philly and I could move up there for the last 1/2 of the set. WOW!!! That was an unbelieveable thing for you to do!

DocT (it was a pleasure to dance next to you! Thanks for the reality checks!), LooseEnds and hubby brucejuice (did we find the right Durango?), Rosie/gypsyangel (what energy you have girl!), JanieGirl (hey, sister!), DirtyAnnie, firerich... new friends and old friends. It was a great night!

Alley, my roomie and good luck charm... thanks for waking me for the sunset! I'm so happy for you and your encounter with the man. Good things do happen to great people!

Scoot - I'm so glad you made it! It would not have been the same without you!

Well, that's my story. Oh, what a night!

Janie

btw - do I recall a night ending group Roxbury??????

I absolutley loved hanging out with all of you...and as so many of you have said, WE NEED TO DO THIS MORE OFTEN!! I totally agree...I miss everyone already. :(
I still can't believe this all happened and I haven't even told the story to my friends at work...I have made all the calls to my family and they keep telling me, "enough already!" I hope we can get together again some time soon..you know....the anniversary of the first time we all met is coming up soon...maybe we can make Icabod's an annual thing...you know like the 2nd annual meeting of Bruce junkies...??? LOL
well, maybe the title needs a little work...oh well, thanks to everyone again for sharing their stories!! I loved reading them!! take care and meet you all further on up the road...love gypsyangel :D

When I made the "pilgrimage" to Asbury Park back in '85, my first stop was the 'Pony. Unfortunately, it wasn't open. However, some guys were loading beer and stuff into the back (or side) so I got a decent (albeit quick) glimpse of this place of legend and lore.

It didn't seem like it was a big place (and looking at GEE's photos confirms my memory). Does anyone know just how many people were crammed in there? It looked A LOT smaller than the Roxy or the Coach House. Anyone?

I wonder if he's wearing the hat because he's not entirely happy with the haircut?

BS maybe we should have a coalition of Mass residents experiencing Bruce withdrawl.

And maybe if we get tired about whining about Bruce not being around we can whine about how terrible the Patriots are.

to answer your question the pony is smaller than the coach house and about the same size as the roxy. it's set up very differently in that the roxy is a place set up strictly to see a show...this is obviously a bar (band or not).

in other words...not really a bad seat (stand) in the house!

Damnation!! I really am glad so many of "us" got to go. Like the West Coasters, I live so far away that I know I couldn't be there, so it really helps to live vicariously through the rest of you. Thanks for all the reports and congratulations to all of you who were able to be at a truly remarkable event.

JanieGirl: When I started reading this, I hoped that you were there. When I read your post I was really excited. My only regret is knowing that I can no longer say I shared your most special "Bruce moment"!!!

Alley: OMG!! What can I say about that experience? Nothing except that if anybody deserves to be kissed and thanked by Bruce, you do for all the efforts you put into organizing the "get-togethers" and allowing so much to go to charities during the last tour. I know how hard it is to find/make the time to organize any pre-show gathering, let alone have it actually BE "organized" and "charitable"!!!

So, everyone's done a great job of letting you know what Friday was like...I'll try and add my take...

I was kind of sick Thursday and Friday so I almost didn't go, but then figured that if Bruce showed up I would never forgive myself. So,I roadtripped from lower manhattan to the Bronx to pick up my machine (85 Chevy wagon)to Asbury Park-- Marlboro Lights, Sudafed and Roy Rogers keeping me fueled.

Upon entry (thanks Annie!)the buzz was pretty obvious that he was gonna play-I heard rumors that Max and Steven were there in the afternoon, along with Sting(?!)-must have been just rumors. After boozing it up a little and finally meeting Scoot (thanks for the Cds!!) and Doctor T, checking out the other bands, and getting right next to the side of the stage (thanks Billy, Gee and everyone!!), well, you know what happened after 3 songs.

Misc: I know Bruce had lyrics on yellow sheets of paper rolled up in his pocket, I think he took them out at some point but I don't remember when; the Dolphins hat was made by Puma; the jeans had a tag I couldn't read, not Gap or Levi's, and I actually thought they were blue grey. Patti was wearing a cool looking skirt.... ANYWAY,

The first few songs Bruce didn't look like he was having a great time, just doing a job, but I think it was the thing about him not wanting to upstage Joe. He played and sounded great but he wasn't really acting loose... The songs of Joe's that stood out were "Everything's Gonna Work Out Fine" and "Down the Road", (which when written on the setlist caused all of us to think they were gonna play "Further on Down the Road"). Bruce was playing a lot off of the guitarist (which was mentioned), but also was looking at the drummer a lot, especially before Murder Inc, when Bruce confirmed the tempo, and also when the drummer mistakenly went into Light of Day instead of Ramrod and they all laughed... There was one song that the screwed up the beginning about five times before they got it right but it was all in fun. By the time Bruce played his songs he really was having a great time and took over the show. The end of LOD (which I am not normally a fan of) rocked very hard, great guitar work by Bruce and Joe's guitarist.

It felt natural seeing Bruce in such a smallvenue, like the best bar singer ever--but iwasn't a freakout-just very very cool and strangely normal...In retrospect my biggest feeling was that yes, it was one of the coolest nights of my life, but also it would have been cooler with the E Street Band. I know this will sound insane and like I'm complaining but I promise I'm not. I am saying that that when Bruce plays with a rock band, if it's not the E Street band it really takes away from his sound. Not that the Houserockers weren't good--they really were--just that Bruce and the ESB have a magic that can't be denied. While it was tremendously exciting to see him so close, I couldn't help but feel a little bit like it would have been even better and cooler if it was the guys playing during Ramrod and Murder Inc. And if they had played Junghleland and NYCS also!!! Boy, am I one picky sonofabitch or what?!!!!??? But I promise, I had an amazing time- I had been waiting for something like that for 15 years.

More stuff: When he invited the bands on stage during twist and shout, me, Billy and Gypsyangel climbed onstage and were dancing and singing about 5 feet behind Bruce. I was debating weather or not I should move closer and try and sing with him but I didn't....I thought everyhting had gone so well, he didn't need security the whole night and wasn't hassled by anyone, I didn't want to be the one a**hole to get thrown out...I also didn't have a clear path, would have had to go in between the guitarist and bassplayer...and it wasn't really my place and I didn't want to intrude, ya know? He had already given me a great night, I didn't need to try and take even more...

Afterwards, being very thirsty, I grabbed the 3/4 filled Coors Light Bruce had been drinking from, passed it around-DA, TR, GA and I all had a swig (I think i got the names right, it's pretty hazy).

The Funny Part:
Bruce is getting changed in the kitchen area, it's kind a like a diner where there's a rectangular hole cut out in the wall for the cook to put the food on and for the waitress to take it away. Bruce is back there talking to people, and then autographing someone's guitar, asking if he should sign the front or back, talking for a while to this guy even though it's 3 am. So when there's a lull in the conversation i say
"Hey Bruce." He looks at me and says "Hey" back.
I go "Hey Bruce....you ever need another drummer to play with? I play drums...I'll play funky for ya."
Bruce laughs that hoarse kind of chuckle and goes
"Yeah, all right, all right.." and chuckles again
Then I thanked him for the show and Bruce, I think he said "All right, all right"-in a nice way, like "cool, cool", and then leaves while the Stone Pony guard tells me to move along, move along.

After having dreams about meeting Bruce, and thinking about it, and seeing him and listening to boots and interviews and being pretty familiar with his style of talking, it didn't feel really weird to finally meet him--it felt totally normal, like this was just a guy from a party who I was saying what's up to as he was leaving. He seemed nice, if wanting to leave and probably tired. But considering he's probably had 10 or 20 thousannd silly little encounters like this he was pretty cool. Yeah, someday I'd like to actually jam with him, but this wasn't bad..it wasn't bad at all.

Well, time to do a little work so I can go to rehearsal and get out a record so me and Bruce can play the same awards show, where I will reintroduce myself and see if he wants to jam...I swear it's gonna happen.

THANK YOU LIVEDAILY BOARD FOR GIVING ME THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE

[BronxDarren said that he wasn't sure what the label on Bruce's jeans said, so. . .]

ok, so I may have been staring a little bit, but I'm pretty sure the label on his jeans said something like "Toddy Smiths". Is that possible?

Finally I get chance to read this thread!
What a night!!! I'm so pleased that so many of "us " were able to be part of it.
Dari/Toots, I agree - being several thousand miles away makes it a little easier to bear....

Alley!! Have you come back down to earth yet???
Bronx Darren - great story.. maybe one day..

Glad to see that a couple of you mentioned Joe D'Urso, I think he is brilliant. Did he play "Rock & Roll Call"
".. Bruce is the Boss
Elvis is the king etc.."

Great to read all your stories! (I'm as sick as a pig really.. :()

"...Old blue eyes is the chairman of the board,
And Dylan is the muse...
Dylan's always the muse"

I love that song!! And YES he did play it, MM!!! Besides Bruce, hearing Joe sing that was one of the night's highlights!

I have it on good counsel that Bruce, Joe and the Houserockers didn't rehearse for this show. (Joe isn't one for rehearsing for ANY show, I'm told.) Bruce was holding back mostly because he didn't remember the songs.

Bill, Joe's guitarist, is a good sport and a very helpful sort of guy. Perhaps that's why Bruce kept looking to him for assistance. Plus, Bill really enjoys being on stage with Bruce, so he was delighted to help Bruce get it together and keep pace.

Fortunately, everyone up on stage was in a "go with the flow" mood, and it worked out fine.

Alley - if you can remember with all the excitement, did Joe D'Urso play "Deep End" of the new album? I bet that is AMAZING live... :D

You lucky people!
