View Full Version : Recommendations for the day!

Equinox
Jan 27th, 2003, 09:09 PM
I'm gonna start recommending three albums each day (basically just trying to spread the word;)).

For Today:

Aphex Twin "Richard D. James Album"
Chemical Brothers "Dig Your Own Hole"
Fatboy Slim "You've come a long way, Baby!"

Starting with some old school, and tryin to give variety since I do favor a subgenre of it now...

ahh, great ole Leftfield lol

you think that Live disc is good? I think its horrible, but its your recommendation

Vengeance
Oct 3rd, 2003, 05:46 AM
Its not bad, I didnt think much of it at first as the first tracks werent that good but it did get better.

I got it as a double CD with 'Do you know Squarepusher?' and the title track sounds better on the live CD than on the original. Well in my opinion anyway. Though I do admit the sound quality wasnt particularly brilliant on it. :p

Anyway moving on Leftfield are indeed great! ;)

One other recommendation would have to be:

Underworld - Beaucoup Fish :)

Equinox
Oct 3rd, 2003, 01:42 PM
yeah, I originally got it as the double cd as well and then sold it , but i did get a copy of the first disc, which I still think is great, not minding the critics of course...

I like Underworld's early albums like "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and "Second Toughest in the Infants" more than Beaucoup, but you know how it goes

I'll add one for the day...

Kid606 "Illness" EP

Vengeance
Oct 6th, 2003, 06:58 AM
Sly! Though half of the time its not worth listening to the critics, I mean the reviews for Aphex Twins Drukqs album were hardly inspiring though probably would be to do with the fact that you have to listen to the album at least a few times before you can appreciate it.

I keep seeing 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' for sale on ebay, might get it though its just the lack of time at the moment...

Equinox
Oct 7th, 2003, 07:26 AM
go ahead and get a copy! I've never personally owned one, but I did listen to it a few times...

Drukqs is classic, I know a lot of people that hate it because its too varied and they call it non-consistent, but I think it brings every single idea he's had in his career and puts it on 2 cd's...the experimental weirdness of Selected Ambient Works II is on this, the maniacal IDM on RDJ album is there, and even the weird funny samples at times that were part of a satire on Windowlicker...

I think it's great, but i'm only one person with an opinion...

Recommendation for the day:

Loess "Loess"

Hmmm, its a good album and the first one of his I actually bought but the sheer randomness of it I suppose might put some people off maybe. Though theres at least a third of the tracks on either CD that are works of art. It is quite varied though speaking of Classic, whats the Classics ablum like? I've noticed it around once or twice, have you heard it?

Equinox
Oct 23rd, 2003, 11:23 PM
have I heard it? of course I have, had it for awhile now, it's mostly his techno **** from around 89-91, hardcore techno stuff that has the 4/4 drum beat of house, but with a big difference in distortion, and the use of his custom made tb303...It's quite good if you like that kind of stuff...if you listen to Polygon Window's "Surfing on Sine Waves" or Caustic Window's "Compilation" album (both polygon and caustic being Aphex), you will see the similarities in the styles because of the timeframe...

Hmmm, not sure, I don't think I've been into radiomute. I've only ever really been Dotmusic or at the Deep Dish forums, I've also ventured out into the Tech House forums and now here! I get ALOT of mail to Widges of random nature so I'm guessing it could be a popular name!

But I love the chance to rant on about music, even if no-one cares! I MIGHT even get down and paste my HUGE amount of Amazon reviews on here too!

OK! Today I'm on Adam Beyer's Ignition Key LP, after having this on vinyl and being blown away, decided to grab a CD copy so I could listen to it at work. Its kinda like what happens when IDM meets tech house in a dark alleyway for a bit of a scuffly scuffle. The result is cracking, groovealicious with very Warp friendly sounds.

Tracks to go for ARE:

Ignition Key -> title track and plain WICKED opener
Nanobot -> electro at heart, with nice IDM style synths adding a layer of warmth to proceedings
Bluetone -> downtempo number, mechanical clickings and scrapings make up the beats that hover echoing in the background, the synths over the top, icy, add a more friendly nature to the track
Those Funny Moments -> Downtempo on this track, melacholic and almost Boards Of Canada-y, with a dash of good old Autechre

cLOUDDEAD is floating my boat at the moment, QUITE happy about this discovery:

cLOUDDEAD - Apt. A (2)
cLOUDDEAD - Two Dogs Dead (Boards Of Canada Mix)
and I'm sure they're on DJ Krush - Song For John Walker

Equinox

the whole cLOUDEAD cd is great, taking all the songs from the 10" and putting them on one cd. I know they have a remix on the boom bip 12", at least, I think so.

Digitonal's "23 Things Falling Apart" is superb, try it at once!

I'm currently running on fumes fundwise! There is alot on my 'to get' list, cLOUDDEAD, Digitonal, Prefuse 93, Selected Ambient Works 2, considering Confield and want to listen to draft 7:30 ... all with no money! Plus there is a new Fila Brazillia mix coming out, a Tyrant one from Fabric .... VERY impressed with cLOUDDEAD's sound though!

Equinox
Jan 12th, 2004, 10:30 AM
not a fan of confield, but I guess Draft 7.30 is actually pretty good. Get all the Prefuse 73 you can get (including his Savath+Savalas and Delarosa+Asora side projects), and also check out Hymen and Ant-Zen labels if you want to get in the darker/harder side of electronics.

Beefcake is superb!

K&D are definitely good ones...Dorfmeister has a side project called "Tosca" which is another chill-out type suit. That DJ Krush is album is with Toshinori Kondo. One of the most underrated trumpet players around.

hi everyone,

im new to the boards, thought i'd start off in here with a few reccomendations.

firstly 'Layo & Bushwacka' - start with 'love story', thery're pretty sweet duo, mixing nu-jazz with beats. very nice.

secondly, Mr. Scruff - pretty much just pure funk, he samples a lot of older stuff, my dad's always coming in saying 'what that sounds like' :rolleye2:

anyway, look forward talking to y'all!

Very unique (Kalevala inspired) and I just love the vocals and the rhythms! They're kind of a fusion between Finnish folk, jazz, rock, progressive, electronic, ect. depending upon which tracts you listen to. Take a listen, and the more you listen, the more you may find yourself listening :)
