David Beckham is a Real Madrid player!

Signed and confirmed. David Beckham is already a Real Madrid player. Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez and England captain signed the contract binding both parties together for the next four seasons. “Thanks, President. I am very happy”, said Becks to Mr. Pérez after the signing at Santiago Bernabéu offices. It might sound like a cliché, but just looking at the satisfaction on his face, one can tell his statement was most sincere.
David Beckham arrived at the Stadium around 17:30 in the company of his wife Victoria and his oldest son Brooklyn. He only took just a moment to stop by his hotel for a little break after the medical checkup at Hospital Sanitas La Zarzuela. Next thing in his schedule was the signing of the papers that make him a Real Madrid player.
With a smile on his face he greeted Jorge Valdano in a very relaxed manner, just before meeting an old friend of his: Carlos Queiroz. Both of them chatted for a while and said good-bye with a hug. They will meet again on July 24th when both will begin a new phase together in Real.
A few minutes later, the other party of the agreement, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez , arrived in the Stadium. Everything was set at Santiago Bernabéu’s Board Room, though Becks preferred to step on the pitch along with Victoria and Brooklyn. He already knew it, but this time it was from a different point of view: as a white player. He even asked for ball to give it some kicks with his son Brooklyn. “I just can’t wait”, he said.
Finally, the most special moment came at 18:30. Beckham proceeded to sign his contract with Real Madrid using a fountain pen that his wife has given him as gift just for the occasion. The Beckhams also did a very nice gesture: in return to the Club’s gifts, two Siemens SL55 cellular phones, they gave Florentino Pérez a diary and a fountain pen. “This one is for the next conctract”, said the President to Beckham. “I wish, President. Thanks to everybody. I am very happy, really, very happy.” These are Beckham’s words. He is now a Real Madrid player.

New team, new thread, haha. I have yet to see him put on a Real jersey, hope it doesn't look weird on him. I still feel odd not seeing him playing for Man Utd.

Beckham will always be a Man Utd fan:)
David Beckham is in no doubt Manchester United will cope with his departure, as he looks forward to a new chapter in his life.
On the day the 28-year-old was unveiled as a Real Madrid player, the England captain admitted the move has 'not yet sunk in'.
But he took time out to remember his time at Old Trafford and insisted the club will 'always have a special place in my heart'.
He told MUTV: 'I spent 13 years at Manchester United - I've always been a Manchester United supporter and will always follow them. It's been a massive part of my life and they will always remain a big part of my life.'
Beckham continued: 'I have to move on and Manchester United will have to move on. They're a great bunch of players and to be a part of them for 13 years is a great pleasure - but they'll move on, as I have to.
'With a captain like Roy Keane they have got a great captain who'll lead them on to success. They're great players and great lads. I've got so many great, great memories - so many great things have happened to me. The club will always have a special place in my heart.'
Beckham admitted he will particularly miss the five players he grew up with at Old Trafford - Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary.
He added: 'I'll miss the players I've grown up with - that's the one thing I'll miss about Old Trafford. I'm the first of the six to leave and it's hard because I regard all the players as family more than anything and to be leaving like this is sad for me.
'They will always be friends to me - but Madrid is a big challenge and I'm looking forward to it.'
Beckham said: 'I'll be starting totally afresh - but living in Spain has always interested me. I was honoured to be linked with Real Madrid and it's going to be an honour playing for them - such an exciting experience.
'It's been a busy last two or three months and my head probably won't be clear until I meet up with the rest of the lads, get back training and meet people in Madrid.
'It's started to hit me since I've arrived in Madrid and seen pictures of me with the kit on - but I suppose it won't really, really hit me until I walk out at the Bernabeu with the kit on.'
Beckham acknowledged he had had 'ups and downs' with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, but repeated his earlier claims that he would not be a Real player without the Scot's influence.
He continued on MUTV: 'People have always said we had our ups and downs - and of course we did, that's part of life. But we always had a good relationship - he's the reason I joined the club and he's the reason I'm the player I am today.
'Of course I have to thank him - he has always been a father figure to me and I'll never forget that. Sometimes it is disappointing when you are out of the team - I like to be involved in every game.
'But there are great players at Manchester United and you have to get on with it - which I did. I'm sure the same thing will happen at Real - I'm sure I won't play every game there, but that's football.'

I'm not sure though because last time Manchester United fans came to Cardiff (Worthington Cup) all they did was moan and complain(apparently, I read it in my local newspaper. It is. A lot of us Welshies are really annoyed and the assembly is annoying. 55 million on a new assembly building so they can "send out the right message" but oh no, they can't give that money for a children's hospital. Wales is the only European country without a dedicated children's hospital and the people of Wales have to raise most of the money for it. Politicians, who'd have them?

They did a comparison on Sky Sports News shortly after Becks signed for Real. They only compared the 2002-03 season but the results showed they were equal in converted free-kicks that season although i think Becks had a higher percentage that hit the target. I think they both converted 2 free-kicks that season. I was kinda surprise with that

Book Description
David Beckham is one of the world's foremost media icons, his popularity transcending sport and cultural divides. This is his own in-depth account of his career to date, for Manchester United and England, his childhood, family and personal life, and the full story of his transfer to Real Madrid.
Synopsis
With endless newspaper column inches devoted to one of the most talked about men in the world, it seems that we know everything there is to know about David Beckham. Or do we? This is Beckham's life story in his own words. The book deals with his complex relationship with United boss Alex Ferguson and looks at how he handles the pressure of playing alongside some of the most volatile footballers of his generation, from the likes of Cantona, Schmeichel and Keane. It tells the England story, from being vilified by the nation before returning as the prodigal son and almost single-handedly guiding his country as captain to the 2002 World Cup Finals. From Beckham himself, we gain an insight into the family man behind the famous footballer, the international model and fashion leader. He describes how he first met and then married ex-Spice girl Victoria Adams and the upbringing of their two children Brooklyn and Romeo. He goes on to discuss how his family's every step is monitored by a posse of newshounds and paparazzi. He also tells of the influence of his parents, growing up as a shy youngster in the family home and how their subsequent split affected him.
From the Publisher
With endless newspaper column inches devoted to one of the most talked about men in the world, it seems that we know everything there is to know about David Beckham. Or do we?
This is Beckham’s fascinating life story in his own words. His stormy relationship with United boss Alex Ferguson and the highs and lows of his career at Old Trafford. The England story, from being vilified by the nation before returning as the prodigal son, captain of his country and almost single-handedly guiding them to the 2002 World Cup Finals. And the full account of a turbulent 2002/03 domestic football season, when relations between Beckham and his manager hit a new low, culminating in his highly publicised transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Now from Beckham himself, we gain a vivid and at times searingly honest insight into the family man behind the famous footballer, the international model and fashion leader. He describes how he first met and then married ex-Spice girl Victoria Adams, and the upbringing of their two children Brooklyn and Romeo. How his family's every step is monitored by a possee of newshounds and paparazzi, and the threats to their safety. Also, the influence of his parents, growing up as a shy youngster in the family home, and how their subsequent split created a yawning chasm in his private life.
This book is an intimate and soul-searching portrayal of a massive celebrity, a family man, and an awe-inspiring footballer – the likes of which we are unlikely to see again.

Yay, go David! I read some of it in The News Of The World. It's only David's side of the story but if he's telling the truth then Ferguson didn't treat him well. Brooklyn was ill and David wanted to look after him so he rang the club and left a message saying he wouldn't be coming in for training. He goes in the next day when Brooklyn was feeling better and Ferguson has a go at him blaming his wife saying that she went off gallivanting(her picture was in the paper) and that he'd got his priorities wrong. Beckham then says that his family are his main priority so he thinks he has his priorities just right.
Dreamer7

I think we can say we pretty much know Fergie is a very controlling man, so I can see where Beckham is coming from. Also everyone usually blames everything on Victoria, which I think is unfair.
muffins
Sep 1st, 2003, 03:43 PM
Yeah, I'm not a fan of hers or anything but the man clearly loves her and the feeling is mutual and they have two gorgeous kids and they should be David's main priority. I think he's a good example to men because he puts his wife and children first. I mean, what does Fergie want, Manchester United to be the focal point of everyone even if they have more pressing matters. Some things are just more important than football. And then it's like Victoria gets blamed for him missing training etc. He does have a mind of his own I'm sure!

I don't think so, maybe slightly. Maybe a better term to use would be over-popular. Lol. I have read many people criticising Beckham of being slow, can't dribble, this and that or that Owen only can run fast, so over-rated? Nay.
muffins
Sep 24th, 2003, 08:40 AM
I don't think that they are over-rated at all. Problem with Britain is it builds people up and once they reach the top they have to instantly dislike them and knock them off their pedestal. The amount of times England(and Liverpool in Owen's case) have been on the brink of defeat and either Owen or Beckham has won it for them I've lost count!

I mean, they're not kissing or anything, it may not be Becks, it could be a fake! But the body language expert said that Victoria should be worried.

Is pretty good but I think Ronaldo kicks ass and he doesnt get half the attention DB gets for being a pretty boy.
Dreamer7
Sep 29th, 2003, 07:06 AM
It is just the attention, and this doesn't makes any difference to who he (Ronaldo) is as a player, he will always be considered one of the best player/striker in the world and I don't doubt that either. In footballing terms Ronaldo gets pretty much a good share of attention....Now if you are talking about attention outside football.....well too much attention isn't good at all imo.
Well Beckham's ankle injury seems to be quite serious and he won't be playing for Wed's CL, too bad, another missed chance to watch him play. Hope he gets better. :hat:
Wait, you are talking about Real Madrid's Ronaldo, not that Man Utd's Ronaldo right? Hahaha.

found something while surfing through the internet. it's about alex ferguson:
By NEIL CUSTIS
ALEX FERGUSON'S long-term future at Manchester United has been thrown into serious doubt.
The Old Trafford board are said to be `frantic' that boss Fergie has gone ahead with legal proceedings against United's major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus over racehorse Rock of Gibraltar.
Now they want the issue sorted out before he signs a new four-year contract. The dispute has delayed the signing of the deal which the club had hoped to announce at last week's AGM.
United board members are trying to negotiate with Ferguson and Irish millionaires McManus and Magnier, who own 23 per cent of United shares.
But neither side appear willing to budge in the row over Rock of
Gibraltar's stud rights — worth between £40million and £80m.
If Ferguson does not get the support he wants from the United board it could see an end to his 17-year reign.
Publicly United have been saying the issue is a private matter.
Privately, senior figures believe the court case will cause the Scot
too big a distraction.
One source said: "The case may not come for another year and could last six months. That is too big a distraction when he already has the biggest job in football."

David Beckham is to take on Gazza and Princess Anne to find Britain's greatest sporting personality.
The BBC is giving TV viewers the chance to vote for the ultimate figure to celebrate 50 years of its annual Sports Personality Of The Year award.
In a series of 30-minute BBC1 shows to be screened early next month, Gary Lineker will profile each of the winners since 1954.
Viewers will then choose five to go forward to be named Golden Sports Personality during a live vote during the show on Sunday
December 14.
David Beckham makes it into the vote after winning the 2001 title.
Paul Gascoigne was the 1990 winner while Anne won in 1973. Other winners over the years have included motor racing champion
Nigel Mansell, ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean and last year's champ Paula Radcliffe.
The final vote will be taking place as part of the regular annual Sports Personality show.

Beckham: OBE my biggest honour
David Beckham today admitted receiving his OBE from the Queen was probably the highest honour of his career so far.
Beckham: Order of the British Empire. (PhilCole/GettyImages)
The England captain, who scored in Real Madrid's Champions League victory in Marseille last night, sported formal morning dress of black top hat and tails for the ceremony at Buckingham Palace where he was accompanied by his wife Victoria.
'This is just an amazing day,' said Beckham. 'It's a dream come true.
'It's definitely on a par with my football medals - if not better. Her Majesty said she was very pleased to be giving me this award.'
The former Manchester United star revealed the Queen had asked about his travelling arrangements to and from Spain.
'She asked if it was exhausting travelling around the world to play football matches, and I said `no, because I am used to it now'.
'I know Her Majesty is a football fan because when I was at a number 10 reception, the Prime Minister told me he had watched a World Cup game on television with the Queen and William and Harry.'
Beckham, who scored with a trademark free-kick in France, revealed he was nursing a bad back.
'I scored a goal but I also picked up an injury. But it's back to Spain for me tonight to prepare for a league game on Saturday.
'I love it in Spain - I love the football and I love the life.'
First, however, there was time for a family celebration.
'I think Victoria has organised a surprise lunch somewhere nice.
'We'll meet up with our children. Brooklyn is four and a half now and Romeo is one and a half, and we thought they were probably just a bit too young to sit through an investiture.'
Beckham's wife wore a black tailored outfit with designer hat featuring fine feathers and the midfielder spoke lovingly of his her pride when he received the award from the Queen..
'Victoria is so proud - maybe she was even crying. And I'm so proud that she could be here today to share this with me.'
The Beckhams were accompanied by Beckham's maternal grandparents, Joseph and Peggy West and arrived in style in two chauffeur-driven Bentleys.
'One is mine and I hired the other one for my grandparents,' Beckham revealed.

DAVID BECKHAM can add `world's best free-kick specialist' to his list of titles after collecting his OBE from the Queen.
That is the verdict of Roberto Carlos, 28, who once had no equal when it came to blasting a swerving, looping set-piece shot into the net.
But the Brazilian deadball master admits he has to stand aside for Becks when Real Madrid get a free-kick just outside the area because no one bends it like Beckham.
And Carlos is even mistakenly happy to call the England skipper `Sir' after he bamboozled Marseille keeper Vedran Runje with another inch-perfect free-kick.
Carlos said: "Lots of players have the ability to take a good free-
kick but, on recent form, David is the best in the world."
The goal against Marseille was Beckham's first in the Champions
League for Real and the 600th in the club's European Cup history.
Carlos admitted he was in awe of the strike but got a little bit
muddled over Becks' trip to Buckingham Palace to be honoured by the Queen.
After filming a TV commercial where the pair take on Sumo wrestlers, Carlos has no trouble picturing Becks as a shining Knight jousting with goalkeepers.
The World Cup winner added: "He deserves his meeting with the Queen.
"You have got to respect him for that. He is not just an important
man in England but the whole world.
"Everyone at Real Madrid is happy over this honour and all the things that are happening to him.
"We don't have those kind of things in Brazil. But at the age of 28, to be known as Sir David Beckham is some achievement."
The two players formed a close friendship after Carlos took it upon himself to help Becks settle in Spain after his £25million move from Manchester United.
The cheeky Samba king gave Becks his first Spanish lesson by teaching him how to swear.
And Carlos revealed that Beckham is showing his appreciation by
teaching him a new trick or two when it comes to sending a ball over a defensive wall and past the keeper.
Together with Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo, they spend hours at
Madrid's training ground mastering their techniques.
Carlos revealed: "David is scoring important goals at the moment but it depends on the position of the free-kick as to who takes it.
"Against Marseille, it was close in and he strikes the ball very well
from there. If it is further away, then either I or Luis Figo can
have a shot."
5 BECKHAM SPECIALS
ENGLAND v COLOMBIA (26.6.98)
BECKS opened his England account with a stunning 25-yarder in a 2-0 win.
ENGLAND v GREECE (6.10.01)
ENGLAND were seconds away from missing out on automatic World Cup qualification when a mohican-clad Beckham stepped up. His heart-stopping strike sent Old Trafford wild.
MAN UTD v REAL MADRID (23.3.03)
CAME on as a sub to score twice, the first of which was a sizzling
trademark free-kick.
REAL MADRID v FC TOKYO (5.8.03)
BECKHAM'S first Real Madrid goal was a stunning strike into the top corner which put his army of Japanese fans into clover.
REAL MADRID v MARSEILLE (26.11.03)
SHOWED the legendary Roberto Carlos how to do it with a brilliant 25-yarder which just dipped in under the bar.

David Beckham has been voted the sexiest man on the planet with one in fivepeople globally rating the football star as their numberone hunk.
The Real Madrid star and England captain beat strong competition in the form ofHollywood actors George Clooney and Ben Affleck to take the title.
But it seems his popularity varies markedly around the world. Twenty per cent of
respondents to the Durex poll picked Beckham as
the sexiest man alive and while 55% of Vietnamese nominated the star,
that figure dropped to just 2% in the US.
Clooney scored 15% of the vote and was most popular with Italians, while Ben Affleck, with 13% of the total vote, was a big hit in Germany.

DAVID Beckham is worth a cool £60million — but that is peanuts
compared to soccer's real fat-cats.
He is only 43rd in the Top 100 of British football's money men and
women.
At No1 is Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich who has a
£5.5BILLION fortune.
Tycoons Joe Lewis and Trevor Hemmings rank second and third. They have invested in Spurs, Rangers, Preston, Charlton and Bolton and are worth a combined £3billion.
The only manager is Man U's Sir Alex Ferguson, who creeps in at No92 with a £15million fortune — one of 13 in the 100 linked to Old Trafford.
The full soccer rich list is in the latest issue of soccer mag
FourFourTwo out today.
Just nine players feature. After England captain Becks, the next
richest is Liverpool's Michael Owen at No73 with £21million.
Newcastle's Alan Shearer is at No74 with £20million. Man City's
Robbie Fowler and United's Roy Keane share 85th spot with £18million each.
Full list ... in
FourFourTwo magazine
Man U's Ryan Giggs and Arsenal's Sol Campbell are at No89 with
£16million apiece.
Man U's Rio Ferdinand is in 92nd place with £15million. And rival
City's Steve McManaman is at No98 with £12million.
Just two women appear — Ruth Gist, widow of Chelsea's late investor Matthew Harding (61st, £30million), and TV cook and Norwich shareholder Delia Smith (74th, £20million).
FourFourTwo editor Mat Snow said last night: "Not even David Beckham can seriously rival the people who own club shares and sit on the boards."
British football's ten richest
1 Roman Abramovich, businessman and Chelsea owner: £5,500million
2 Joe Lewis, investor in Tottenham Hotspur and Rangers: £2,200million
3 Trevor Hemmings, investor in Preston, Charlton, Bolton: £700million
4 Dermot Desmond, non-executive Celtic director, £10m stake in Man U:
£660million
5= Malcolm Glazer, US tycoon, second-biggest Man U shareholder:
£650million
5= Fred Walker, brother of Blackburn Rovers moneyman Jack.
£650million
7 Sir Alan Sugar, second-biggest Spurs shareholder: £609million
8 John de Mol. Dutch TV tycoon and Man U investor. £600million
9 Mohamed Fayed, Harrods boss and Fulham owner: £560million
10 David Sullivan, press baron and Birmingham City owner: £500million

DAVID BECKHAM'S Real Madrid face a nightmare Champions League clash with bogey side Bayern Munich.
German giants Bayern, who are four-time winners, have the best record of any European club against nine-time champions Madrid.
They have beaten the Spanish soccer powerhouse nine times in 14 meetings, with one draw.
Bayern's star midfielder Michael Ballack said: "I bet you anything
Real weren't amused.
"They wanted to play against any other team than Bayern.
"On the other side, we were really happy with the draw. It's going to be an absolute highlight."
Real's assistant manager Emilio Butragueno admitted it was the
toughest match-up in the draw.
He said: "Of course I would have preferred another team because we know Bayern Munich are a very strong team and maybe it is too early to play against them.
"We would really have preferred to face them later in the finals or
semi-finals."
AC Milan — winners last season after a penalty shootout against
fellow Italians Juventus at Old Trafford — face a Sparta Prague side that finished second to Chelsea in their group.
Sparta midfield star Radoslav Kovac said: "It's a terrific draw —

Scaloni continues Becks war of words
Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Lionel Scaloni has warned David Beckham he 'will be waiting for him' when they next meet at the Riazor Stadium in May.
The players became involved in a heated row after a foul by Beckham during the closing stages of Real's 2-1 win at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
The England captain attempted to diffuse the situation by offering to shake hands but Scaloni was not interested and claimed Beckham's gesture was insincere.
'The referee asked us to shake hands, but I didn't want to,' Scaloni said.
'I didn't think he meant it as we wanted to kill each other 10 seconds earlier. I think it's false to offer your hand because we couldn't stand each other.
'He fouled me from behind, we both fell over and threw out a couple of kicks and after that he made a gesture that I didn't like at all.'
Depor host Real on May 2 - just over a month before the start of Euro 2004 - and Scaloni has promised England captain Beckham a hot reception at the Riazor.
'There is always a chance of revenge in football and we will see each other again on a football pitch,' Scaloni said.
'That is where things are decided and I will be waiting for him in our Riazor stadium for the next game.'

more about becks and fergie:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON believes Manchester United are better off without David Beckham.
The United boss is adamant he has a better squad at his disposal
since selling the England skipper to Real Madrid for £25million last
summer
United have scored more goals, conceded fewer and won more games than at this stage last season - proof, said Fergie, that they are even better than last year.
"Squad-wise we are much better this year," said Fergie. "Last season we lost David Beckham, Seba Veron and Laurent Blanc, while Fabien Barthez went on loan. But the young players we've bought are improving all the time, the likes of Darren Fletcher, David Bellion and Cristiano Ronaldo. We're much stronger. The club is really moving forward."
Ferguson's withering dismissal of Beckham's contribution to the club has reopened the wound left by the England skipper's sale to
Real.
Beckham hit back on Christmas Eve by claiming on the ITV1 documentary The Real Beckhams: "I didn't think for one moment the sale would happen. I was more upset than anything because I had put so much into United. I felt I had given 120 per cent every time I performed."
Becks added: "Ferguson still hasn't spoken to me other than at a
funeral. I expected a bit more respect to be honest." The good news for Fergie yesterday was that injury-plagued defender Wes Brown came through a full training game with flying colours.

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid overcame the loss of injured David Beckham and flu-struck Zinedine Zidane to open up a five-point gap at the top of the Spanish first division with a 1-0 win over struggling Murcia.
Beckham was forced to leave the field after 79 minutes after a
crunching tackle by Rafael Clavero left him with a bloodied right
ankle.
The England skipper needed four stitches in a wound on the ankle, making him doubtful for Wednesday's Spanish Cup match against Eibar.
Raul scored the only goal of the game after just eight minutes as the Spanish international striker became the third highest scorer in the club's history.
He joins Hugo Sanchez on 164 goals in third place in a table topped by the Alfredo Di Sefano (216 goals from 1953 to 1960) and Carlos Santillana (186 goals from 1971 to 1988).
Real had already lost the services of Zidane at half-time with the
Frenchman suffering from a heavy cold and a fever.
The absence of two of their more creative players had a destablising effect on the league leaders who had to withstand long periods of Murcia pressure and the visitors, second from bottom of the table, had two penalty appeals turned down.
Deportivo La Coruna began 2004 in rampant fashion by thrashing Celta Vigo 5-0 away, with Spanish striker Victor smashing a hat-trick and Alberto Luque and Diego Tristan notching the other goals.
The victory left Deportivo in third place, one point behind Valencia
who can cut Real's lead back to two points if they beat Villareal on Sunday.
Atletico Madrid moved up to fourth after a goalless draw at
relegation-threatened Real Zaragoza in Saturday's other match.

David Beckham has an infection in the ankle wound he suffered last week and is likely to miss Real Madrid's Primera Liga match against Real Sociedad.
The 28-year-old England captain was initially injured while playing
against Murcia when he needed four stitches.
And he was still expected to return this Saturday for the clash with Sociedad until the recent complications came to light.
A statement from Real's medical department revealed: "He (Beckham) has an infection in the wound.
"He still has four stitches which they gave him to close the original wound. These require a period of time before they are taken out as the wound has to form a scar."
Beckham has not been able to train yet this week at the Spanish
giants' Las Rozas headquarters.

Beckham still has treble vision
MADRID, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's form has dipped noticeably since the turn of the year but England midfielder David Beckham believes the club are still on course for a domestic and European treble.
Real lost the league leadership at the halfway mark in the season as they limped to a 1-0 defeat away to Real Sociedad on Saturday.
That result let Valencia take over at the top with a 1-0 win over Albacete but Beckham, who missed Saturday's game because of an ankle injury, remains upbeat about his side's position.
'The treble is still a definite possibility,' Beckham said at a news conference on Sunday. 'We're doing well in all three competitions.
'It's always important to win the league, the Champions League means so much to people in Spain and at Real Madrid and we want to win the Cup as well.'
Real started the season in spectacular form, with Beckham immediately settling in following his 35 million euros move from Manchester United.
They made it through the group phase of the Champions League in style and cruised to the top of the Primera Liga with four straight victories at the end of 2003.
The week-long break over the festive period has taken its toll, however, with the team's form deserting them in the new year.
FORTUNATE VICTORY
They managed to make it five straight wins by claiming a fortunate 1-0 victory at home to relegation candidates Murcia in their first game back, but they had no such luck in Saturday's reverse against Real Sociedad.
They also face a scrap to reach the quarter-finals of the King's Cup after a 1-1 draw away to Eibar in the first leg of their third round tie last week and a Champions League second round clash with Bayern Munich is looking more and more of a hazard.
Real have undeniably lost their spark but Beckham is still confident in the players around him and in coach Carlos Queiroz, who followed him from United to Real Madrid.
'We've obviously played a lot, lot better than we did against Sociedad,' Beckham said. 'The most important thing is that the players realise when we haven't played well and work to get it right.
'If we don't start playing well again soon, I'm sure it will be something we talk about.
'The manager is very good at picking players up and, if he feels he has to do that in the next few days, I'm sure he will, because the last couple of games have been a bit disappointing.'
On the subject of possible new signings in the transfer window - something ruled out by club president Florentino Perez - Beckham added: 'We've got great players at the club and I wouldn't change any of them.'
As for his injury, the England captain has fixed his likely return for the club's next league game away to Real Betis.
'I hope to be back for then,' he said. 'I had hoped to be back for the next Cup game against Eibar in midweek, but it was very painful when I kicked a ball in training today and I don't think it will be possible.'

news again:
David stars in his first pop video
DAVID Beckham has shot his debut pop video with one of Europe's sexiest singers... but Posh was nowhere in sight.
Becks is starring in the video for Spanish singer Ana Ann's new
single, Children Of The World, because it's all in aid of children's
charity Unicef.
"David is a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and the track is the
official Unicef song," says our source.
"He happily agreed to appear and waived the fee."
Brazilian footie legend Pele and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan also star in the video to promote the track, which was recorded
alongside the London Gospel Community Choir.
He says: "I believe all children deserve the right to peace, health
and dignity." A spokesman for LL Records - which is putting the
single out on February 9 - told 3am how thrilled the label was when Becks agreed to take part.
"We are delighted that David is in the video. It can only be good for the charity.
"We are thrilled he has offered his talent to the organisation in the hope that we can help to increase awareness of what Unicef does throughout the world, and also raise funds through selling CDs."
It's not the first time Becks has helped the charity out.
In 2001, when he was playing for Manchester Utd, he took time out from the team's tour of the Far East to visit a UNICEF centre for abused girls in Bangkok.
He said at the time: "It's just so sad to think about how these girls are growing up without their Mums and Dads.
You can tell they just want to be loved."
Other goodwill ambassadors include Robbie Williams, Geri Halliwell and actor Roger Moore.
We've got a great idea for Unicef bosses - a charity video with
Robbie and Beckham.

latest news:
DAVID Beckham has revealed that one of his legs is shorter than the other.
The problem, a medical condition called Lower Limb Inequality, came to light during the medical for his £35million move to Real Madrid last summer.
Becks, 28, said: "Earlier this season I had a slight hamstring
problem that was being caused by my back and the fact that I was playing all the time.
"I'd had a bit of a back problem at United for a couple of years.
"I think it must be caused by the fact that one of my legs is shorter than the other. I know that's the case with a lot of people, but mine is quite a bit shorter.
"I didn't know about it until I signed for Real. When I came out of
the medical they said, 'By the way, you've got a bit of a problem...'"
Becks added: "I think it's my left leg that is shorter than my right.
"I've tried to wear insoles, but I just can't wear anything in my
boots. That's the problem with my present injury. I don't like
wearing anything padded because I only want to feel the boot against my foot and nothing else, especially when I'm taking free kicks."
Beckham has been plagued by a succession of niggling injuries that have disrupted his season and are likely to leave him battered and bruised ahead of this summer's European Championship in Portugal.
His most recent injury - a deep gash on his right ankle sustained as a result of a challenge by Murcia's Argentine defender Jose Luis Acciari - has forced him to sit out Real's last three games
Today he will make his first appearance in two weeks when Real take on Real Betis.
Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz said last night: "Beckham is going to
play. Yesterday he was in pain but today he has trained again wearing protection and he's OK.
"It's a delicate area because it's close to the bone of his right
ankle, the foot he kicks the ball with, but he has got better quickly and we are hopeful he will be even better tomorrow."
Becks told the Sunday Mirror: "We'll see how it is tomorrow. It's
still sore, but I need to play some football. It could open again,
but I don't think it would cause any serious damage."
He said the disruption has been particularly annoying because he has been playing some of the best football of his life since joining Real.
"I think this has been one of the best seasons in my career," he
said. "That's why it's so frustrating to be sat at home watching
games.
"But I don't think the injuries will make a difference at the end of
the season as my fitness can be put right in two weeks, so it
definitely won't affect me for Euro 2004."
Six out of 10 people suffer from the same condition as Becks - and often don't realise they are suffering.
If ignored it can lead to pelvis pain, a curvature of the spine, and
can spell an early end to the career of a top sportsman like Beckham.

MADRID (Reuters) - England captain David Beckham has been sent off for the first time since joining Real Madrid and put the incident down to harsher refereeing in Spain.
Beckham was shown a yellow card midway through the second half of Real's 3-0 King's Cup quarter-final first leg victory over Valencia at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, apparently for something he said to the referee.
The former Manchester United midfielder, who joined Real last July, was then dismissed for a second booking, given for clipping the heels of Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar three minutes from time.
"I definitely didn't think it was deserved because I was running back and I just clipped the back of his ankle," Beckham told reporters after the game.
"I don't know what the first card was for. Even if I did say
something to the referee he wouldn't have understood it.
"It's different for English players in Spain. The mentality here is
different. You can get away with things in the premiership that you can't get away with here.
"I definitely wouldn't have been sent off for that in England but
I've got no qualms with the referee. It's his decision and that's the end of it."
Beckham will miss the second leg of the Cup quarter-final next week, when Real will look to defend their three goal lead at Valencia.

LONDON (AFP) - George W. Bush and Jesus were left far behind football superstar David Beckham in an Internet survey of British young people's heroes.
Jesus and the US president were each ranked 123rd in the survey of 2,500 young Britons, way behind Real Madrid playmaker Beckham, whose good looks and celebrity status -- and perhaps his athletic abilities -- scored him 132 votes and first place.
"It's slightly depressing really. What links all the names in our top
10 is not their great minds but their great looks," commented Adrian North, a psychologist at the University of Leicester in central England who organised the poll.
"They went for people with nothing much to say but who look good," said North.
Bizarrely, Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) was ranked
69th equal with David Blaine (news - web sites), the US illusionist
who earned ridicule in Britain last year by spending 44 days without food suspended above London in a glass box.
"The Hutton report... will really tell us who is the true master of
escapology," quipped North, referring to the crucial report due to be released Wednesday on the suicide of weapons expert David Kelly.
Providing further proof that good looks are the key to success,
Beckham was followed in poll by filmstar Brad Pitt with 60 votes and singer Justin Timberlake with 58.
Next came Michael Jackson, followed by Jennifer Lopez and Robbie Williams in the survey published on www.celebritystudy.com.

New article:
.......
Meanwhile, David Beckham admits his new role in the Real Madrid engine room is going to see him suspended for a Primera Liga game sooner or later.
'I don't want to get another yellow (card), but it's bound to happen in the next stage of the season,' he said, accepting suspension as just one of the risks he runs in his new role.
Beckham will miss Wednesday's Copa del Rey quarter-final return leg against Valencia after being shown the red card for the first time since moving to Real. He he was booked twice last week against the same opponents.
After last week's sending off Beckham commented that he would probably have not been given his marching orders had an English referee been in charge, but in Spain his more English style of play has caused him a few problems.
'My style of play is to work hard and if we lose the ball to recover it as soon as possible - sometimes it gets me in trouble, but that's the way I play and the way I'll carry on,' he said.
'It needs to be done (making challenges) coming into a team like this you have players who have an enormous amount of skill and those who work hard.
'I'd like to think I've got a little bit of skill and work quite hard,' he added.
Beckham insists he prefers this central role to the one he had previously filled on the right for Manchester United and which he still occupies for England.
'It's a different job playing in the middle than on the right wing, you are more involved in the game and you get more touches of the ball.
'You are not just looking one way, you've got both ways to look but I'm enjoying the change.
'I prefer playing in the middle, I've always said that when I've been asked if I prefer to play on the right or in the middle, I had a lot of great years at Man United playing on the right and it's just a change,' he said.
Beckham also admitted he has learned a great deal from United captain and midfield enforcer Roy Keane.
'You learn from the great players,' he added. 'I've played with Roy Keane for a long time and to play with him and be captained by him was a great experience with me.
'We had two great central midfielders in Manchester, and I was lucky to play with Roy for a long time.'

REAL MADRID answered a six-goal supershow by title rivals Valencia with a stunning comeback win at Valladolid last night.
Valencia won 6-1 at Malaga on Saturday to reclaim top spot in La Liga and they looked likely to stay there when Real trailed 2-0 at halftime. But Ronaldo led the fightback, which ended with the Brazilian star rifling home a last-minute winner.
Valladolid, beaten 7-2 at the Bernabeu earlier this season, took the lead through Oscar in the 34th minute and the striker added a second eight minutes later.
Ronaldo started the Real rally four minutes into the second period
when he diverted home a Zinedine Zidane shot.
Luis Figo equalised from a 62nd-minute penalty spot after defender Juan Manuel Pena was ruled to have handled and was sent off for the offence.
Then Real went down to ten men when Santiago Solari picked up up a second booking eight minutes later.
An out-of-sorts David Beckham was substituted eight minutes from time, but Ronaldo had the last word with a lethal finish for his 18th League goal of the season.
Valencia's goalfest at Malaga was sparked by a hat-trick by Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira.
John Toshack marked his home debut as Murcia coach with a much-needed 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Zaragoza.

Real Madrid ace Becks reckons he can fulfil that dream by winning a major tournament with England.
He said: "I've been the second best player in the world twice and one day I'd like to become the best."
Real's French wizard Zidane was crowned FIFA World Player of the Year for the third time last year while Ronaldo has also collected the gong three times.
Beckham, 28, came within one spot of claiming the accolade in 2000 and 2001. And he added: "I had no fear of joining Real because I'm confident of my ability.
"I just had to prove to everyone in Spain I was a good footballer and not just here to sell shirts."

By Paul Giblin, PA International, Madrid
David Beckham admitted a stomach complaint affected his game as RealMadrid struggled to beat Malaga.
The England skipper was below his best in the Bernabeu clash, whichMadrid won 2-1 to retain their lead in the Primera Liga.
And although coach Carlos Queiroz was keen to play down Beckham'sfitness, the midfielder himself conceded that he was below par healthwise.
"My stomach's not good," he said after the game.
"I've had problems for the past two or three days."
Of the Saturday night match, in which Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos gaveMadrid a two-goal lead before Malaga came roaring back intocontention thanks to substitute Jose Juan Luque's 74th-minute solo strike, Beckham hinted that Real had perhaps been reckless.
"It was a tough match and maybe we relaxed after the second goal," he said.
Despite lasting the full 90 minutes, Beckham rarely hit peak form,
and by blasting three free-kicks over the Malaga bar he again failed to score from a set-piece.
He has yet to score a free-kick for Madrid at the Bernabeu and could lose responsibilities the longer that statistic remains.
However, Beckham reasoned: "There is no pressure on me to score a free-kick here.
"When you have players like Zidane or Roberto Carlos who can take a free-kick, it's not a problem."

A VALENTINE'S Day treat awaits Victoria Beckham next weekend.
David Beckham was recently seen in a Chanel shop in London
buying "armfuls" of skiwear for his wife, apparently in preparation
for a romantic weekend on the slopes.
"It's all rather sweet, really, because he couldn't decide what kind of clothes she'd like," my source tells me. "That's why he walked away with so much stuff. He bought an unbelievable amount."

DAVID BECKHAM put on his Glad rags as he starred in the latest Pepsi TV commercial
The England skipper dressed as a Gladiator alongside a host of worldclass stars including Real Madrid team-mates Roberto Carlos and Raul.
Meanwhile, Beckham owes Arsenal a vote of thanks.
Becks lines up tonight for the Kings Cup semi- final, second leg at
Seville, where Real Madrid were thumped 4-1 earlier in the season.
But that humiliation was the work of Jose Reyes — who recently quit Spain for Arsenal in a £20million deal.
Real lead 2-0 from the first leg. And Becks said: "I have horrible
memories of that day.
"Playing there again will be very difficult for us.
"We will have to forget about what happened last time and go into the game determined to win."

By ERIC BEAUCHAMP:
Seville 1 Real Madrid 0
(Madrid win 2-1 on agg)
ZINEDINE ZIDANE'S red card sparked a massive row as this nail-biting King's Cup semi-final clash descended into chaos.
Real Madrid star Zidane was dismissed after an off-the-ball incident.
He appeared to land an elbow on defender Javi Navarro, who also saw red later on.
The ref failed to spot ZZ's 42nd-minute blow but, after being
surrounded by furious Seville players, he stopped the game to consult his assistant.
Subs, team officials, TV crew, photographers, ball-boys and stewards all got involved in the row.
The arguments went into round two after a shocked Zidane was flashed a straight red card, before order was finally restored. Seville were also reduced to 10 men when Navarro collected a second caution for a 53rd-minute challenge on Ronaldo.
There was anarchy from the word go as a flare hurled from the crowd billowed orange smoke in the Madrid penalty area.
And Seville midfielder Antonio Lopes hit a stunning opener through the mist after just 40 SECONDS.
Madrid, who arrived with a 2-0 lead, tried to get to grips with
Seville as the home side charging forward like men possessed.
Antonito and Dario Silva were unlucky not to get a second goal as
stand-in Madrid keeper Luis Cesar was forced into action.
But, after Navarro received his marching orders, Real found their
composure and held on.
And boss Carlos Queiroz insisted: "We deserved to go through because we held on to the end. Even after Zidane was sent off we didn't lose composure.
"I didn't see the incident, so I don't know why he was sent off."

England captain David Beckham has revealed he came close to quitting football last year and says he has not talked to Sir Alex Ferguson since leaving Manchester United.
The Real Madrid star endured a difficult end to his Manchester United career and has explained how he once considered leaving the game behind in order to spend more time with his family.
"I was really close to finishing my career in the spring of 2003,"
admitted Beckham to L'Equipe.
"I was living a very difficult period in my life. I just wanted to
remain with my family.
"It was a conjunction of several things, my parents' divorce, threats to my children and football. I just didn't want to be exposed to the outside world."
He also explained how he found it difficult to leave Manchester
United after being at the club since he was a schoolboy.
Beckham departed Old Trafford in the summer after a falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a situation he admits he did not envisage after the pair had enjoyed so much success together.
"We have not talked since I left the club," the midfielder
stated. "It is sad because at one-stage we had a father-son
relationship. I had dreamt of a better end.
"When I left Manchester United I was moved deeply. All my life I will remain a fan and I still follow their results closely.
"I have some exceptional friends there and will remain in contact
with Gary Neville and some of the other players there."
Beckham has made a huge impact since moving to Madrid and is now fully focused on life in La Liga.
The only drawback to Spanish life for the player has been the
increased media attention which he feels is even greater than he
endured in England.
"The Spanish people have been fantastic towards me and my family and playing in such a fantastic team is an extraordinary experience," he said.
"The only negative thing I have found since moving to Madrid is the paparazzi. I have no private life.
"I dream of being able to walk with my sons without fearing
photographers who want to make money off our backs.
"The only place I can find peace is on the football pitch."

DAVID BECKHAM EXCLUSIVE
From Simon Baskett In Madrid
DAVID BECKHAM is convinced England have their best chance of winning a major championship in more than a decade when they head to Portugal this summer.
The England captain believes his side will be a match for any side at the European Championship finals.
That's because of the emergence of talented youngsters like Wayne Rooney, combined with the experience of players like Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Beckham himself.
The 28-year-old Real Madrid midfielder said: "As England captain I've got to think we're good enough to go all the way. But I really do think that we are.
"We've got so many talented players in our team. We keep saying every time we go into competitions that we must win something, but it is about time that we should be making a real impact on the international stage.
"When you've got players coming through like Wayne Rooney who can perform at 17 or 18 years old and talent like Michael Owen, then it definitely helps the older lads in the squad like me.
"I think that this is England's best chance in a decade," insists
Becks. "I thought we had a great chance in the World Cup when we got knocked out by Brazil, but when you come up against Brazil you've got to be at the top of your game and unfortunately we weren't."
England undergo their first major test as they begin their
preparations for the Euro 2004 finals when they play hosts Portugal in a friendly in the Algarve on Wednesday.
Beckham and coach Sven Goran Eriksson see the game as the perfect opportunity to focus the attention of his players on this summer's challenge after their 3-2 defeat against Denmark in November.
Beckham added: "It's going to be helpful because Portugal are a very good team and we know it's going to be a tough tournament in the summer.
"So it will be great to go over there to see what the atmosphere will be like. I reckon Portugal are definitely one of the favourites.
"Although the real games start in the summer and this is a friendly, we'll be taking it seriously. We have to get back to winning ways after the Denmark match because that is the best way to lead up to a tournament."
The game against Portugal will also help Beckham erase the memories of the time the two sides met, in the opening match of the last European Championship finals in Eindhoven four years ago.
Kevin Keegan's side stormed into a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes courtesy of goals from Paul Scholes and Steve McManaman, both coming from Beckham crosses.
But a stunning 25-yard drive from Luis Figo put Portugal back in the game and, marshalled by classy midfielder Rui Costa, they went on to a 3-2 win against a demoralised England.
The game ended on an even more sour note for Beckham after he flicked an obscene gesture towards a small group of drunken England fans who hurled a torrent of vile abuse at him as he left the pitch.
Beckham said: "What's happened in the past stays in the past as far as I'm concerned.
"But it would be nice to win after that game, because we were
cruising at 2-0 up. Figo then scored an amazing goal and it went on from there. A win against Portugal would be the perfect way to forget all that went before."
Now, of course, Beckham shares a changing room with Figo at Real Madrid, and the former Manchester United hero says playing with the Portuguese star has given him even greater respect for him.
Beckham said: "I'm really looking forward to playing against Figo in midfield. It's going to be different being on the opposite team to Luis."
Beckham was quick to dismiss suggestions that there is any ill
feeling between them.
He said: "There was something a few games ago when someone said that Luis wasn't happy with me, but the week before we'd been out for dinner together.
"People made too much of it, saying that we weren't talking and we had words, but Figo is probably one of the players I am closest to at the club. There's absolutely no rift."
As well as the duel with Figo, Beckham could also find himself face
to face with his replacement at Manchester United, 18-year-old
wonderkid Cristiano Ronaldo.
Beckham is unconcerned by the comparisons between himself and Sir Alex Ferguson's new golden boy.
"We come up against great players every game," he says. "Cristiano Ronaldo's doing well at Man United and good luck to him."
As for his own role with England, Beckham appears resigned to having to surrender the central position he now fills at Real and return to
his less favoured slot on the right wing.
Beckham added: "I don't know where I'll be playing to be honest. It's up to Mr Eriksson, but I assume I'll be playing the usual role on the right.

Beckham struggling with free-kicks
STEPHEN MACKEY
Canadian Press
Tuesday, February 17, 2004
MADRID (AP) - David Beckham was regarded as a free-kick maestro when he joined Real Madrid but has since struggled to live up to his reputation.
The England captain's injury-time free kick against Greece booked his team's passage into the 2002 World Cup finals. Yet Beckham, who leads England against Portugal on Wednesday, has scored just twice from free kicks in 30 competitive games for Madrid - in the Champions League against Olympique Marseille in November and against second division Leganes in the Copa del Rey the following month.
Beckham, who has had 33 free kick attempts in the league, acknowledged he was underachieving after missing the target again during Sunday's league draw with Valencia.
"I can't explain it but it's something which bothers me. In the next few days, I'm going to try and sort it out," Beckham was quoted by the leading sports daily Marca on Tuesday.
Of Beckham's three Spanish league goals, only his strike against Malaga in September recalled his prowess in dead-ball situations. Beckham tapped Madrid's free kick to Luis Figo, who then teed the ball up for the English midfielder to shoot home.
This season, Madrid has failed to profit from its array of recognized free kick specialists, who also include Figo, Roberto Carlos and Zinedine Zidane. The Spanish leader's only league goal from this route came through Roberto Carlos' recent thunderbolt against Malaga.
Beckham will be denied the chance to recover his expertise in next Saturday's league game against lowly Espanyol as he is suspended.
Even though the former Manchester United player has failed to find accuracy with his free kicks, he is still widely viewed as having made a success of his move to Madrid.
Beckham won his latest accolade from former Spanish national coach Jose Emilio Santamaria, who has described him as the "perfect prototype of a team player".
"What most fascinates me is his talent to move the ball, either centering into the area or changing the direction of play, sometimes from more than 40 yards and always giving a teammate a chance to play with the ball," Santamaria said in the weekly magazine Don Balon.
----
I just hope he scores, he is on target most of the time but fails to get the goals, I think he should put more power into his kicks. His style is to lift them and try to hit into the top corner and it therefore allows time for the goalie to make to save. Give us a free kick goal today! Go Becks.

LUIS FIGO last night hailed David Beckham as the 'complete
footballer' and dismissed talk he ever saw his Real Madrid team-mate as a threat to his career in Spain.
'I cannot remember many other players being able to run and cover as much of the pitch as Beckham. His work rate is like no other I have seen.
'It has helped him as a player because it has given him a new
challenge. Not only has he come to a new club but has played a new position.
'That is the sign of a great player and I'm sure he will play there
for England one day because you always play your best players in
their best positions.
'He became very popular very quickly in Madrid because you can always see hisdesire and commitment to the team and he has fitted in.
'To have someone like that as captain of your country is very special and Beckham is a great player for England.'
you're right, figo!! :)

THE road to greatness began here on the Algarve for David Beckham last night when he was given a glimpse of what it will take to achieve his dreams.
Beckham watched spellbound before the kick-off as the crowd in the Estadio Algarve rose as one to applaud the landmark of Luis Figo's 100th cap for his country.
And after his Real Madrid colleague had been feted by a series of
presentations amid a barrage of firecrackers, the England captain
even planted a kiss on his left cheek by way of congratulation.
It was a game laden with significance for Beckham. For the second half, he played for the first time against his Manchester United replacement, Cristiano Ronaldo.
For that same period of his 66th cap, Sven Goran Eriksson also
allowed him to play in the central midfield position he covets and he responded by laying on the opening goal for Ledley King.
Earlier this week, Beckham was hailed by Figo as a player who can become one of football's immortals and he knew last night marked the start of a crucial phase in his career.
He is in his prime now, playing consistently excellent football in
Madrid and earning one rave review after another from the critics. He is dominating play from the centre of midfield in La Liga, a position Sir Alex Ferguson always seemed to feel was beyond him at Manchester United.
And perhaps most importantly of all, he has now begun the build up to a tournament that could confirm him as a leading talent recognised more for his ability than his image.
It was about this time two years ago when Beckham broke his foot in the run-up to the 2002 World Cup.
And even though he scored that famous penalty against Argentina, he was never in a position to stamp his authority on the tournament.
This time, it's different. Beckham is fully fit and the England side
he captains should be nearing its peak by the time Euro 2004 rolls around.
England are third favourites for the tournament behind France and Italy but if Beckham, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and Sol Campbell are fit and play at their best, they will have a chance of winning their first major trophy since 1966.
So in many ways last night was the perfect occasion for Beckham to measure himself against a man of the stature of Figo.
There was a lot to live up to. For once, Beckham was even
overshadowed in the build-up by the frenzy of celebration surrounding Figo's century of international appearances. The Portuguese FA produced a special souvenir programme to commemorate the occasion and filled it with lavish praise from the biggest names in the game.
Ronaldo said there was "a lot of merit in achieving what Figo has
achieved". Roberto Carlos said as a right-sided midfielder, Figo
is "matchless".
Zinedine Zidane was understated as always. "As he is one of the
greatest football players in the world," Zidane said, "it is not a
strange thing that he has reached this landmark."
Real boss Carlos Queiroz won the prize, though. "I'm very honoured that our lives have crossed," he said. "I feel a special tenderness for all his great times when football, happiness and joy all mingled." Before Beckham moved to Real, he and Figo were fierce rivals and it was rumoured Beckham would take Figo's place.
Instead, they have played vital roles in Madrid's rise to the top of
La Liga with Beckham playing in the centre of midfield and Figo on
the right.
Last night, Beckham reverted to his role out wide in the first half
although he drifted inside as often as he could.
It is easy to understand his dilemma, too, because for all his
crossing excellence, he is not as natural a wide player as Figo.
Figo is a genius, the king of the hip sway and the body swerve, the ability to beat a man without touching the ball. Beckham is more reliant on service and having a ready target for his passes.
But when Beckham was moved to the centre of midfield after the
interval, his first touch yielded the game's opening goal when his
free-kick found Ledley King at the back post. Permitted more time
than usual on the pitch amid the usual rash of substitutions, he
still struggled to impose himself on the game in the second half.
In that respect, Figo came out on top. He was at the centre of
everything Portugal did and by the time he came off in the 66th
minute, he had illuminated the game with his trickery.
Beyond the free-kick for King's goal, Beckham's influence was
limited. There was one clever dummy in the third minute that created the space for a chance for Michael Owen. There was a lot of hard running, a lot of crosses that did not quite find the intended recipient.
Most of England's best attacking movements actually came down the opposite flank in the first half where Frank Lampard did his cause for a starting place no harm and linked well with Wayne Bridge.
This was not a night for Beckham to shine. This was Figo's night. To a man, the Portuguese players mobbed him on the touchline when they equalised. Beckham's defining moments lie ahead.

DAVID Beckham wants to be a movie tough guy, he revealed yesterday.
The soccer idol dreams of playing a heroic role like Mel Gibson's in
Braveheart or Russell Crowe's in Gladiator.
He spoke out after dressing as a Roman warrior for a new Pepsi ad, declaring: "I think I'd like to act in Gladiator or Braveheart, or
something with fights and battles.
"I also enjoyed playing a cowboy in last year's advert."
To help the England skipper feel the part, our computer wizards have shown how he would look in those two leads — and as the Clint Eastwood character in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
They have also imagined how precious he would look as Gollum in Lord of the Rings, and how Robert De Niro's role in Taxi Driver was
cut out for him when he had his famous mohican hairstyle.
Real Madrid star Becks, 28, talked of the advert — in which he kicks a rock-hard ball around with other stars in a Roman arena — in a question-and-answer session published on the club's official website.
He said his favourite part of the shoot was "putting on the costume" which included knee-length metal shinpads.
The former Manchester United midfielder said that though he had
plenty of real life clashes on the football pitch, the hardest battle
"was to be the best".
He told the website: "When you play with Rafael van der Vaart or
Roberto Carlos you try to be the best player of the season and youwork hard for that, although you know that they want to do the same thing."
