It's the qualification rounds and here are tonight's results. I could only find one, I don't know if any more matches were going on.
FBK Kaunas 0-4 Celtic
Here's a Champion's League poll:

Started already? How come Celtic need to have a qualification round?
muffins
Jul 31st, 2003, 05:52 PM
They finished second in the Scottish Premiership and as only the top two go through to the Champions League, the second one has to qualify. It's not like the English Premiership in that not as many clubs qualify for a Champion's League spot. Chelsea and Newcastle have to qualify soon as well.

Chelsea won 2-0 with their new stars.
Newcastle won 1-0, I believe.

Yes they did.
In UEFA Cup qualification Manchester City whooped League of Wales side TNS 5-0 at the new Manchester City stadium. The second leg is to be played at the Millennium Stadium on August 28th. I don't see them coming back from 5-0.

I'm glad Sky have taken coverage of the Champions League. Interactive matches!
muffins
Aug 20th, 2003, 06:38 PM
But that means I have to watch more of Richard Keys.
kev316
Aug 20th, 2003, 08:38 PM
Better than Des Lynam :p
muffins
Aug 21st, 2003, 01:03 PM
I'm not sure about that. At least Des Lynam has the occassional funny moment. Richard Keys interrupts the pundits all the time and he clearly doesn't like Arsenal. He needs to be objective. Gary Lineker is the best by far anyway. I like Gabby Yorath too.
kev316
Aug 21st, 2003, 08:01 PM
I like Lineker over Keys and Lynam too. Sky's commentary team are easily better than BBC's and ITV's IMO. Coverage on Sky is also better.
muffins
Aug 22nd, 2003, 06:15 PM
Yeah, I like Andy Gray and Martin Tyler (I think that's his name). I don't like Alan Parry (he says "Oh great ball" when he's kicked it into the stands!) and Mottson has lost his touch slightly. I think the pundits are better on Sky too. So, when does Champion's League start?
kev316
Aug 22nd, 2003, 07:30 PM
LOL at Alan Parry. He always gets players mixed up too. I believe the Champions League group stages starts on September 16th
muffins
Aug 23rd, 2003, 04:40 PM

Aug 27th, 2003, 04:14 PM
OMG. Nooooooo! Newcastle, how could it happen? They lost at home on sudden eath penalties. Aw. I don't think I'll be watching much Champion's League football this season. Oh wait, Celtic and Rangers qualified so I'll go with Celtic. Gotta love Celtic!
kev316
Aug 27th, 2003, 05:25 PM
Uh, Newcastle just blew it (and at least £10m). Man I wanted to see all 4 Premiership clubs make the group stages at least.
Dreamer7
Aug 27th, 2003, 06:40 PM
Newcastle's recent performance hasn't been really good, not being good on form must have cost them the CL place. Too bad, I wanted to see all the 4 EPL teams too.

Yeah there is! Here you go:
AC Milan v Ajax Amsterdam
Besiktas v Lazio
Club Brugge v Celta Vigo
Man Utd v Panathinaikos
Partizan Belgrade v FC Porto
Rangers v VfB Stuttgart
Real Madrid v Marseille
Sparta Prague v Chelsea
muffins
Sep 16th, 2003, 04:21 PM
Wow! Manchester United won 5-0. Chelsea won 5-0 and I think Rangers won at the death 2-1.
kev316
Sep 16th, 2003, 07:05 PM
Chelsea won 1-0.
I was watching Man Utd game first, once they went a couple of goals up I switched over to the Madrid game and that was game over by half time. Second half I think I killed the batteries on my remote. Too many live games to watch! I think i'm gonna watch the Arsenal v Inter game tomorrow.

C'mon Arsenal! I'm not a fan of the Italians at the moment so that's even more reason for me wanting Arsenal to win. It's going to be extremely tough. They'll need Henry on top form.
muffins
Sep 17th, 2003, 03:17 PM
Well, Arsenal were whooped at home by Inter Milan 3-0. Henry even missed a penalty, well it was saved. Celtic narrowly lost to Bayern Munich 2-1.

Maybe Arsenal needs some new players, I heard they ain't got a solid defence unit.
kev316
Sep 18th, 2003, 09:44 PM
They are getting exposed way too easily at the back. I don't think they have replaced Tony Adams since he retired. Also under the current financial situation at the club Wenger can't go out and spend big money on players
muffins
Sep 19th, 2003, 12:05 PM
It was a big mistake letting Upson go to Birminhgam especially for a titchy price tag! If they had got a bit more money for him then that might have helped. Upson wanted to leave because he wasn't getting enough first team action but I think Wenger should have played him more anyway!
kev316
Sep 20th, 2003, 08:43 PM
Yeah, I agree about Upson.

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - David Beckham hopes he can have a glorious night in Munich once again when Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich in Tuesday's Champions League showdown.
Beckham captained England to one of their finest moments at the
Olympic Stadium when Sven-Goran Eriksson's team beat Germany 5-1 in a vital World Cup qualifer and Beckham is dreaming of a repeat.
"It would be fantastic if we could repeat that," said Beckham. "If we play like that we will have no problems.
"Bayern look like they are there for the beating but that is just a
trick.
"We are not afraid of Bayern but respect them."
Munich has been covered in deep snow ahead of the game and manager Ottmar Hitzfeld is hoping the cold can throw Real, who are used to the sun in Spain, off their stride.
"We ordered the weather for the match," Hitzfeld joked. "The
Spaniards will not like the weather and I think we can profit from
that.
"Real are not used to playing in the snow that often."
Real's Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz also cited the weather as a disavantage for his team full of Brazilians and Spaniards.
"It goes without saying that the weather is an advantage for Bayern," confessed Queiroz.
Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldo admitted he had a lot of warming up to do in Munich.
"Ze Roberto told me it was cold in Munich," said Ronaldo. "I need
gloves, a hat and foot cream."
Oliver Kahn is expected to recover from a back complaint and take his place in the Bayern goal, although Hitzfeld admitted midfield playmaker Michael Ballack would decide himself whether he could play in the encounter after suffering from bronchitis.

something out of the newspaper:
From ERIC BEAUCHAMP
Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1
DAVID BECKHAM helped Real Madrid pull off their best result at Bayern Munich — thanks to a gaffe by Oliver Kahn.
Keeper Kahn played only after having a course of 14 injections to
counter a back injury.
But he was left red-faced as he allowed a Roberto Carlos free-kick to squirm under his body and into the net for a shock 82nd minute equaliser. Real had lost on all seven of their previous visits to the Olympic Stadium. And until Kahn's error it seemed Roy Makaay's header had put Bayern on course to finish the job in two weeks' time.
England skipper Becks said: "It is definitely an advantage getting
this result. We are happy with the away goal and the score.
"It is half-time and there is another game to go but we will be
confident we can get the win we need in Madrid."
But midfielder Beckham refused to put the boot into Kahn after the German's howler.
He added: "I wasn't surprised when it went in because Roberto can hit them and they swerve all over the place."

I actually managed to watch about 20 minutes of the 2nd half, when both goals were scored. The most hilarious part was that Bayern player trying to fake a face injury!!! Did you saw it? The ball was won, and his opponent foot was so far away from his face, yet he still crumble down holding his face. That player should be booked.

I think despite the lost, Man Utd still can win and advance in their 2nd leg, unless they really screw up again.
Chelsea needs to get scoring, they have been producing 1-0 results too often. He change the front 2 way too often imo.

Mar 11th, 2004, 06:17 AM
MADRID (AFP) - Nine-time champions Real Madrid edged out four-time winners Bayern Munich 1-0 here to squeak into the Champions League quarter-finals at the Bernabeu, completing a 2-1 aggregate success.
Real, missing injured Brazilian star Ronaldo and suspended compatriot Roberto Carlos, had French maestro Zinedine Zidane to thank for a narrow victory as he stabbed home 13 minutes before the break.
But the meeting of two giants who have won European football's
premier club competition 13 times between them failed to scale the heights, the contest reduced to a tense spectacle.
It was also marred by an ugly brawl right at the death as tempers frayed.
Real manager Carlos Queiroz like playmaker David Beckham may not get the chance this time round to play their former club Manchester United as they exited on Tuesday but the former was happy with the overall performance.
"It was hard out there even if it looked easy at the time," said
Queiroz.
"It was a great defensive performance from the team and I liked the way we managed to employ Bayern's virtues of physicality, winning aerial battles and marking."
Beckham for his part said that the side had proved that even without their Brazilian duo they could win the tough matches.
"We're very happy," said the England captain.
"We knew it would be a tough game but we worked hard.
"Tonight we showed that even when Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos are not in the squad we can do well."
Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld could not hide his despair.
"It is a huge disappointment," he said.
"We came here with a real hope of winning but it was not to be."
The teams, meeting for the 16th time, had parted 1-1 at the Olympic Stadium a fortnight ago thanks to Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn letting a Roberto Carlos effort slide from his grasp.
This time Real had to make do without their Brazilian wingback,
suspended for two European games for violent conduct in the first leg after he hit out at Bayern's Argentinian defender Martin Demichelis. Ronaldo was sidelined with a hamstring injury picked up at Santander last weekend.
His absence left Raul, top scorer in the history of the competition
with 44 goals, to plough a lonely furrow up front.
As a result the Real machine was running below full throttle.
Real took the lead in the 32nd minute with Zidane, in Ronaldo's
absence playing further forward than usual, hooked home from close range after Michel Salgado nodded on a hopeful Beckham cross.
While Beckham tried to cajole some magic for Real, Bayern had their own England man in the engine room in the shape of Owen Hargreaves, who was poleaxed after coming off worse in a clash between the two in the opening minutes.
Hargreaves did not reappear after the break, replaced by teenage midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger while Beckham, on a yellow card, had a quiet night.
Real keeper Iker Casillas, at 22 already a veteran of two European Cup-winning squads, twice saved the hosts' in the closing stages of the opening period, blocking a Ze Roberto piledriver with his legs in the 41st minute.
Two minutes later German World Cup star Michael Ballack bisected a square home defence to find Dutch dangerman Roy Makaay, but Casillas turned his rasping effort on the turn round the post.
The ensuing corner eluded Casillas but Salgado performed acrobatics to flip an effort from Claudio Pizarro off the line and over.
The Spanish league champions were missing Roberto Carlos badly, with 22-year-old Alvaro Mejia no substitute for the former's trademark surging runs.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who lifted the trophy with Bayern three years ago, threw on strikers Hasan Salihamidzic of Bosnia and Paraguayan Roque Santa Cruz for the final quarter.
But, urged on by a fanatical 77,000 crowd, Real drove themselves
forward and the margin could have been greater had Kahn not bravely denied Guti seven minutes from time.
Schweinsteiger had a last chance for Bayern but drove narrowly wide before Guti appeared to get involved in an altercation with several Bayern players to spark brief mayhem.
Real have traditionally struggled against the Bavarians, this
season's first leg draw the only time they have avoided defeat in
southern Germany, while the 'Meringues' also lost home legs in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons.
On the earlier occasion they still advanced through the group phase alongside Bayern and beat their rivals in the semi-finals, going on to lift the trophy.
Real cruised through the opening phase in winning four and drawing their two other games while Bayern won just two of their group games while managing to edge out Scotland's Celtic.

Yes decisions went against Liverpool. I was gutted but I still think Liverpool's tactics are still a bit negative. Heskey is a good providor for Owen and Baros is good and so is Kewell. I can't help but think if they attacked more we'd score more and therefore win more!

I do like Claudio and I really don't want him to be sacked, I love listening to his interviews. If they somehow win the double they could not possibly sack him! However, Arsenal have played some absolutely gorgeous football this season and it'd be a shame if they didn't win anything so I hope they win the Premiership. As for Real I don't know what happened as I was watching the Arsenal game. Real went 1-0 up and I thought oh they're through and had a shower at half time. I came out of the shower and Chelsea had equalised and Monaco were 3-1 up. I was like "How long was I in the shower?" Hehe.

Newcastle make it through to the UEFA Cup semi-finals by beating PSV Eindhoven 2-1 and 3-2 on aggregate, Gary Speed and Alan Shearer getting the goals from set pieces. Marseille are their next opponents who knocked out Inter Milan. Villareal beat Celtic and will now play Valencia who beat Bordeaux.

Chelsea are beaten by Monaco 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final. Not looking too good for the Blues.

It was better than tonight's match between FC Porto and Deportivo. It got better in the second half but it was nothing in comparison to the quarter final matches. I got the impression quite a few people thought that there would be a lot of goals but the first leg ended 0-0

to be honest i wasn't interessted in deportivos/portos match. that's why i didn't watch it. however, from what i read in the newspaper, it must have been a boring match.

In the UEFA Cup Newcastle were held to a home draw by Marseille in the first leg of the semi-final. It will be hard for Newcastle but tonight they did have a lot of players out injured. I hope they can get a result in Marseille.

Well Real have Ronaldo and Raul, both undisplacable when they are fit. Then next in line are Solari and Morientes and someone else I believe, well they had to let someone go, these players don't like warming up the bench don't you think.
I see a final between Monaco and Porto, two surprises!

I hope Chelsea can spring a surprise and comeback and I want Deportivo in the final too because of their quarter final match. However, if it ends up being Monaco v Porto I'll be rooting for Monaco.

Monaco draw with Chelsea 2-2(5-3)on aggregate)after Chelsea were winning 2-0 but missed an abundance of chances to go in front. My dad tipped Monaco and my uncle tipped Porto to win the Champion's League from ages ago! Hehe.

Awww. Not a good week for English clubs in Europe this week. Newcastle just lost 2-0 to Marseille. I was hoping they'd be able to win tonight. Oh well.
