DON'T expect to see Maria Shriver's much-ballyhooed exclusive "Dateline" interview with Britney Spears anytime soon.

The bubblegum diva abruptly decided not to cooperate with the NBC show, for which she was supposed to appear this fall, and has switched to another network, we're told.

"Britney's manager pulled her cooperation from 'Dateline' when ABC called up and promised her a huge prime-time holiday-season special," a source reports.

"ABC pulled out all the stops for Britney. They see it as a war with NBC, and they want to win. ABC promised Britney her own special, plugs on 'Good Morning America' and 'Entertainment Tonight' and nonstop coverage of her new album, 'Britney,' " our source continues.

NBC was said to be furious when Spears pulled out, since they'd offered her spots on "Today," "Access Hollywood" and other NBC shows. But insiders note that while "Today" regularly whips "GMA" in the ratings, "Entertainment Tonight" has more pull than "Access."

A spokeswoman for Spears had no comment. But a rep for ABC confirmed that Spears will be doing a special interview with Diane Sawyer on Nov. 13.

"NBC may complete the 'Dateline' interview at some point, but Britney's people won't allow it until after Diane's special airs," our insider adds.

Meanwhile, Britney's mom, Lynne, notes on Spears' Web site that the pop tart is working nonstop on her forthcoming album, but has taken some breaks.

"Britney took a well-deserved and much enjoyed break to a fabulous spa in Arizona," Lynne writes.

"Britney has really loved decorating her condo in Los Angeles. She says it's so nice to live where everything seems so convenient. Pool, spa, valet service and daily maintenance are great. Living near the beach is serene and the atmosphere is very women-friendly.

"Recently, Britney went to New York to attend Larry's (her manager) birthday party. It was a surprise party for him attended by a small, intimate group. [But] Britney is in a quest to finish this album and is hard at work in the studio as I write. She says it feels like her natural habitat lately."
