What is the one book that you cannot stand to read or try to read??? I know mine is "Lord of the Flies" ...i know that is supposed to be a classic and all, but to me it seemed poorly written, i never knew who was speaking! Maybe if I try it again someday I will understand why it is supposedly so great, but until then....

Oh, you guys are nuts! The Crucible, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies are some of the only books I've ever read for school that I actually liked. :D And A Land Remembered, but I think only Florida students get to read that one.

perhaps because it is written pretty straight forward; many people love it, many people find it boring, it's just one of those books.

yeah, usually when people are forced to read things, they don't absorb the information or even care to actually.

Little Women. I hated that book so much because of how sicky sweet all the sisters were. I couldn't even finish it and I almost always finish books even if I'm not liking them that much.

I didn't care much for Emma either...I couldn't keep the stupid characters straight and I finally gave it up. I guess I should try both of those books again sometime...

I have never read a book I dont like.

As for the Bible, many people have trouble understanding it at times, but when taken into context and studied, one can see that it is not hypocritical.

I read part of that book in high school, years ago. I can't remember much except that it's set in the Middle Ages and it has a whole bunch of different stories. But from what little I can remember I think I enjoyed it.

I would actually say that if read out of context, and just as another story or literary work, The Bible (or at least parts of it) can be quite interesting.

So have you not read many books, are you not very picky, or are you just very selective about the books you do read?

tiger_rascal
Feb 2nd, 2004, 08:16 PM
I have read many books, Im just selective and know what I like.

One book I almost did not like was Salems Lot by Stephen King. I was disappointed it was about vampires, too obvious, but there was a lesson to be learned about faith in that book and I admired that.

Wait, there was one book by Dean Koontz that I did not care for. I cant remember the name though. It was the only book by Dean Koontz that I did not like and I have read many of his books. I dont even know why I finished it, I suppose I just wanted to see what was going to happen, some books do not start out too good, but get better. It was an ok book, I finished it, so it must not have been terrible, but that was a long time ago and I can not remember my main problem with it, but I can remember that compared to his other books, it was lacking.

tiger_rascal
Feb 2nd, 2004, 08:32 PM
It was Funhouse. I was much younger when I read it, I need to look for all my old Dean Koontz books and I just may read that one again.

It contradicts itself a lot, but I don't find it hypocritical. Preachy, I guess that's its job. ;)

I know many hate what the Bible brings out in people, but that's not hating the book itself. Was just interested in your response.

Emma confused me as well, but after reading it a 2nd time helped me alot. i actually enjoy it very much now.

now back to answer the question.
first things come to mind are Ivanhoe & Eight Cousins. never could get into Ivanhoe. EC i read back in 8th or 9th grade, it's still one of the stupidest books i've read. i'm sure i've read other stupid books, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Nice avatar Bekah. :p

I've never read any full books by the guy, but I tend to hate most things by Mamet. And I tend to dislike most classic Russian writing, or at least what I'm told of it from reading only a couple of books (i.e. We by Zemyatin). That book, and the genre in general from what I hear, just builds up and then ends abruptly. The end sequence was like one sentence!

edit: nevermind on the avatar... It's no longer a red X.

I really hate Dickens' writing (I think he overstates everything, and all his characters are cardboard), so I avoid anything by him.
Also, there are many, many bland works of fiction around lately that I can't believe ever got published.
