Simpson shines in short concert
By SCOTT CRONICK For The Press, (609) 272-7017
ATLANTIC CITY - How big of a pop superstar is Jessica Simpson? Big enough, apparently, that the screaming teenagers that packed Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort's Xanadu didn't mind waiting 45 minutes for her to take the stage without an explanation.
They also didn't seem to mind that Simpson performed just eight songs - including one that wasn't even her own - in a set that barely reached 60 minutes. That's probably because most of the people in attendance had their $28.50 tickets paid for by their parents; and the parents that accompanied them probably were grateful for the show's brevity.
That said, Simpson proved to Atlantic City on Saturday that she is a dynamite vocalist who has both a killer range and a super-powerful voice. The stunning longhaired blonde, dressed in tight jeans and a black tank top, sang her heart out for the few songs she sang.
Television crews for ABC's "The Apprentice," an upcoming reality series where contestants vie to be Donald Trump's apprentice for one year, as well as MTV's reality series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica," starring Simpson and her husband, Nick Lachey, were buzzing around the Xanadu, filming the entire concert.
Trump, who introduced Simpson, donated $25,000 to Simpson's charity, Operation Smile, which helps Third World children born with facial deformities.
The night certainly was odd. Other than the long delay and Trump being much friendlier to the crowd in front of the cameras, the short concert was interrupted by a video for Simpson's charity, which Saturday's concert raised money for.
There also was a five-minute auction of a designer hat that someone in the front row paid $2,500 for. Lachey made an appearance during the bidding, standing next to Trump on the Xanadu floor.
Despite the many high-pitched shrieks urging him to perform, Lachey never got on stage, another oddity considering the couple celebrated their one-year anniversary Sunday and Lachey was scheduled to sing at least one song.
Oddities aside, the crowd loved Simpson, and rightly so. Although she is not the most dynamic stage performer, at least she doesn't rely on the tricks and gimmicks that Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera need to stay popular.
Simpson relies on her voice. Too bad her songs don't have a little more teeth. Out of the eight songs, five of them had "Love" in the title. Most of them dealt with her relationship with Lachey.
But despite the light subject matter, which the teen crowd seemed particularly enthralled with, Simpson and her five-piece band showed they have some musical chops, particularly on "I Wanna Love You Forever," the sultry "Sweetest Sin," a cover of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All," the new single "With You" and her biggest hit and the evening's finale "Irresistible."
Hopefully, Simpson will return to Atlantic City when she's on a major tour and can offer a bigger and longer production. But for the 2,000-plus Xanadu crowd, Saturday night served as a nice holdover they won't soon forget.

I was there, by the way. :P It was the best concert I've ever been to...the way she sounds on the cds and live television performances is NOTHING compared to how she sounds in concert...
