Yup I heard that too. Too bad she isn't releasing a ballad next, ala Christina. It'd be really great for her to gain new fans and respect if she released something like 'Everytime' or 'Shadow' next. Think about it: Stripped has sold over 5 mill. copies and look at how well the singles were chosen:
Dirrty = core pop audiance, and introducing Christina's "new" image
Beautiful = pop audiance, but appeals to more people than the "club crowd"...shows off vocal skills, gain recognition and have a single eligible for the Grammy's
Fighter = pop/rock crowd, especially with the "goth" video
Can't Hold Us Down= R&B/Rap audiance because of Lil'Kim
The Voice Within = pop, and ending on a highly respectable note
Kelly seems to be going the same route:
Miss Independent = pop, gains other fans than AI because of popular beat
Low = pop/rock
The Trouble With Love Is = pop, on a highly promotionalized movie's soundtrack, and show's off her vocal skills
By Britney releasing:
MATM: = pop, "sequel to Slave", good for a single because of Madonna & club remix.... she starts off the same way as Kelly and Christina with the upbeat song
but then by going to Toxic is like her releasing What U See is What U get, or like releasing Bombastic Love
Sure Toxic is my fave song, but it's clearly not the best track on the record. Besides, with radio stations already playing it, it'll lose spins fast, as it's not released as a single officially yet.
Her best bet would be to go with a ballad, and if she does need to release an upbeat song, then Outrageous or Boom Boom (although still not a great choice) would be better.

I've heard Boom Boom on the radio, but not Toxic.

I don't thinks she should release any ballads. I've never met anyone outside of hardcore fans who actually likes a Britney ballad.

Toxic is good, but her next single should be BOM or Shadow.

TOMH would also be an excellent next single.

Actually you guys are right...the next single should be TOMH or Shadow, I still think. Breathe on Me is bound to get a LOT of flack, because it's less...less like um, well it's more direct and stuff. TOMH is a little less obvious as to what it's about, and it's more subtle than BOM. I still think Shadow would do well, because it's a little like Michelle Branch's 'Breathe' or Avril's 'I'm With You', so I think that would do pretty well on the radio and MTV

I LOVE Toxic. It's a great choice. It has brought her lots of new fans and will bring even more if it becomes a single. IGTBB, Outrageous, TOMH, BOM, and Everytime should all be future split singles.

:( awww. I like Toxic but I dont think its going to do well.
I really wish Breathe On Me would be a single, it's my fav :)
Well I guess anything other than TOMH would be okay. I think TOMH is one of her worst songs ever. It sounds similar to the songs that didn't make the first album.

^ Seriously? I LOVE TOMH, and think it has a unique sound...nothing she has ever done before. But, just my opinion I guess. :)
Anyway, I love Toxic :) I hope it does well!

Releasing "Toxic" may just be the worst career move she's ever made, IMO.
The critics like it, the fans like it...but who else will? I guess we shall see.
From personal experience...I don't know one person offline who likes it. When it's on in my car (and I don't say who it is) people are like "WTF? Turn this **** off. It's annoying." Of course then Britney starts singing and they know who it is and then respond with "Oh, figures." :o

i think toxic is a better choice then boom or outrageous simply because it is what she is best at and people are familiar with. If she released boom or outrageous people would think she was trying to cash in on what's hot right now...hip hop. People would be quick to turn on her and say she was looking for a hit instead of taking risks and finding her own sound. Toxic is a pop song but very different from what she previously put out...i think its a great choice and can be a hit.

I like "Toxic" but I dont see it doing that good on the charts..even though I hate "..Boom"..it has a better chance as a second single...

even though boom is more hip hop, its still pop with the britney sound that everyone is more familiar with and that is why it would do better. the urban crowd would like it more and then the pop crowd will like it as well cuz its a mix of both. see what i'm saying?

After trying to choose between "(I Got That) Boom Boom" and "Outrageous," Britney Spears has instead selected "Toxic" as her follow-up single to "Me Against the Music." "It's a very fun, upbeat song," Spears said of the track, on which she sings of being addicted to the wrong type of guy. "Bloodshy did it, they're great producers. The way they did it musically was very cool, and really different, that's why I like it so much." ...
