Any one of Janet Evanovich's books. But I do suggest "To the Nines".

Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Five People You Meet In Heaven, The Lovely Bones (if you haven't already checked it out), The DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons, The Eyre Affair... I could go on and on but I won't ;)

Any of the twelve short story collections published by Pentti Haanpää. (Finnish)
Here's a link to a short review of the novelist, Pentti Haanpää, in English:

Now if somebody could just get some more English translations of his works available... Anyway, he did have quite an interesting perspective about life in general.

how about a Thor Heyerdahl book, Java? What would you recommend? 'Aku-Aku' or 'Kon-Tiki'?

Both of those are good, but you might want to try 'Fatu-Hiva' too.

Reviving a stagnant thread back to life... hopefully...- The Kalevala - ...now if the English translation could ever be even half as smooth as the original Finnish...

I heartily recommend Richard Feynman's Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, an amusing, thoughtful, and informative depiction of one of the most gifted minds of the 20th century.

I went to that link about The Kalevala that you posted long ago and it looked so interesting, but at the same time it was hard to follow or maybe I just didn't try too hard. I forgot, is there any way to buy a copy of The Kalevala in English? I'm thinking no because there was like a sale on ebay going by the thousands... Eh, help?

I have one but it's also in Finnish as well as Russian too – kind of a combination book with all three languages posted side by side, however it took nearly a year to get it through a friend originally from Russian Karelia who had contacts with local artists in his home country. Eventually one of them found a copy and snail mailed it to the States to my friend, and then my friend snail mailed it to me.

I will have to admit, that was a lot of work, plus time, just to get one book, but it sure was a nice one – hardbound and with pictures too!

Wow. That must look nice. Do you know why it's so hard to find copies of this book?
