KENTWOOD, Louisiana (AP) -- Folks in Britney Spears' hometown don't see the humor in the superstar's weekend wedding joke.

Spears' 55-hour marriage to fellow Kentwood resident and childhood friend Jason Alexander has engulfed the town in an unwanted media frenzy and it has rekindled an old question: What's she done for Kentwood lately?

"It's embarrassing to have the worldwide media attention with the buildings in such rundown, decrepit conditions," said Tammy Shaffett, a co-owner of The Hair Studio on Avenue F, the main street that once had traffic and a movie theater.

The wedding had the makings of a great yarn. Alexander — a hulking former high school football player — and Spears, wearing a white baseball cap, midriff-bearing shirt and torn jeans, jumped in a limousine and got hitched at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Strip at 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hours later, the 22-year-olds renounced their wedding by calling it a prank that went too far, and wrote the whole thing off with an annulment. Joke over.

But the stunt turned into an embarrassment for Kentwood — population 2,200 — as Alexander returned home to his family with a flock of reporters, television crews and paparazzi following.

Since getting home, the Southeastern Louisiana University junior was "kind of hibernating" and collecting his thoughts, said his father, Dennis Alexander.

The media hunt for Alexander overwhelmed Kentwood as reporters questioned the town's residents to find Spears' groom. Reporters staked out his family's home and sheriff's deputies were called in two days in a row to disperse the crowd.

"Yesterday it really caused chaos," said Robert Alexander, Jason's grandfather. He said Dennis Alexander, an auto mechanic, had to close his garage Monday because of the intrusion.

Downtown, television satellite trucks set up near the main intersection, causing locals to rubberneck all day.

Some said they want to be proud of Spears and her success, but think the pop star hasn't shared her wealth with her hometown, which is languishing from a dying dairy farming industry.

"I wish the improvement of our town got as much attention as Britney Spears' wedding," said Dylea White, a co-owner of The Hair Studio.

"She should give some of her money to the town. She should help out. I know if I had some of that money I would," said resident Heather Patterson.

Spears' publicist did not immediately return a telephone call for comment.

And now that Spears has abandoned her wholesome girl-next-door persona with tales of wild partying, her nearly nude magazine spreads and the kiss she shared with Madonna, many people here don't like what she represents.

"She's not building character. She's not a mentor to anyone," said Ellice Womack.

There are some signs that Spears hails from here: a mansion she built for her family, a few banners on stores and an exhibit at the Kentwood Museum.

The exhibit, done on a shoestring, includes faded photographs of the budding pop star. Items from her childhood bedroom, including dolls and her bed, are on display behind glass. Her "Mouseketeer" leather jacket hangs in a corner.

"She's just a very nice, hometown country girl," said Carolyn Nettles, a museum worker. "We all know her. She's just like one of us."

Britney should give money to the town, huh? Gimme a break. How rude is that.

Building character? Mentor? I'm a little fed up with people laying that on celebrities.

What she did was a little stupid and sure, it sucks to be Kentwood right now because they're overrun with stupid reporters trying to get the scoop... as well as nosy fans.

But for crying out loud... now the hometown people are not pleased? Tough luck. It ain't all Britney's fault. Go knock on Jason's door and tell him you're pissed.

I am sorry they're overrun - that really stinks. I'd be annoyed too. But those above comments just irked me.

Wow. That really annoyed you, didn't it? LOL!

Well, I dunno. I'd be annoyed too. And I'm pretty sure Jason has heard plenty of complaints about it as well.

And from the looks of the town, it is pretty run down. Not that she owes it to the town to help rebuild it, but it would be nice. I mean, if I were in her position, I would. And I'm not just saying that. If my hometown looked that bad and the buildings were that rundown and the economy were that bad, I would want to help my neighbors.

Well no I hear you. I do. I would help out my hometown too, a little. I mean I can't say I'd give millions, but I'd help out a smidge.

I just hate it when people expect things from celebrities, and then get publicly annoyed at them for not coming through.

But, hey, they're entitled I guess. And I haven't been keeping up with the news to see what the town looks like, honestly, so maybe if I saw it I'd feel more sympathetic.

I guess you were in between your room and the living room when Access Hollywood was on. But the town, other than her huge, beautiful home, is pretty bad.

Not saying, like you said, that she needs to give millions, but something to help get them back on their feet would be nice.

I agree that alot of times, people ask too much of celebrites and get annoyed when they don't follow through.

And on the flip side, I get annoyed at celebrities that complain about things and never do anything about it either. For example, those that complain that they are so over-worked and never get to see their families, yet when they have time off, they don't go home, but jet off to Hawaii or God knows where else.

interesting how they voice their concern now! Also interesting how the media is now listening...whatever!

I would understand their concerns if Britney Spears had never donated a penny to any charitable organization but though i'm not a huge fan of Britney's i'm not going to be blind and say she doesn't. So if she helped the town financially would they stop bad mouthing her and condeming her for the choices she has made...no! If anything Britney is bringing business into Kentwood when the media sets up camp there.

LA Lady...i totally understand where your coming from...people shouldn't expect so much from celebrities. I've actually seen the town and honestly it does look run down but the media circus surrounding Britney is surely helping the businesses there.

Jenn - LMAO. I agree with your comment. And yeah I remember seeing her house, but I don't remember seeing how bad the town was. Didn't notice I guess.

Ah well.

I don't feel she needs to give to her town, although if i was in her postion, i would!

I think the media is going overboard, however i can not say i feel sorry for Britney or Jason cuz come on now, you know what kinda attention this would draw. I feel more sorry for the town thats being bothered!

From what I know, Britney does give plenty to charity. And, to be honest, when a town's economy falters, it actually would take millions to rebuild the area.

I can understand that people in Kentwood want her to help out, but to come right out and say that is just rude! Britney is the one who has the talent; Britney is the one who has earned the money; Britney doesn't owe them anything at all.

And I truly never thought I'd see the day when I'd be defending Britney Spears!

Hell just froze over.

Or was that just Philadelphia?????

One day it's 80ish during the day and then suddenly, it's 45.

My blood had thinned and I can't take it anymore. I seriously feel like I will die.

The 10 degree situation is precisely why I moved down here!

But it's really windy! That's what gets me! Chills right to the bone!

Has anyone even mentioned about "giving back to your town?" That's what the residents of Kentwood, LA. are asking according to that interview. I was not far from Kentwood 3 years ago (I was in Hammond, 30 miles south, during a road trip stop), but that area is very quiet and the people are friendly. Now Britney Spears did that wedding thing with Jason Alexander for a joke now, but futher down the line it will haunt her for the rest of her life. Some celebrities move from their small hometowns to the flashy lights of L.A. or New York and never come back. Never do. They're too trapped in the now. I can understand some residents' dismay of their most famous native. Britney needs to rethink her future priorities instead of some silly, lame nonsense such as a Las Vegas wedding. She should donate some of the money she makes from her platinum albums to the town She has a tour coming up--get ready for that! And as for Jason, I'm sure he's had some hate mail and ridicule and doesn't want to show himself to the public. Admit it--he embarassed HIMSELF!!!! He even ducked his head in an interview. Don't expect some greedy reality show TV producers from Hollywood knocking at his door, because they won't go for this crap!
