Didn't see the link, but if Kate's other posts were taken from it, I'd say Chad was correct in removing it.
"Respect" is more than simply allowing people to say (or, in this case, post) anything they want. It's a matter of not going out of your way to offend others.
Yes, I know.....satire is a legitimate and honored form of humor. But to qualify as such, it has to have some redeeming value. If not, it's just trash, and needs to be removed before it starts to stink up the joint.

I know that you guys have a different sense of humor and you've got all these different ideas of how things should be but this is a PG13 board as has been set up by LD and we've all got to deal with it being like that. I'm sure there's been some people that have chosen to aggivate you guys by being rude and disrespectful but that doesn't make it okay to post sexually explicit links. You don't like it and that's fine but posting on LD comes with rules and there isn't much anyone can do about it, other than leaving.

What are YOU talking about? Why don't you find out what argument is on before involving yourself?
I can't believe ANYONE is offended by that.

She wasn't going out of her way to offend. If you knew Kate you'd know that, but instead you jump to assumptions. It HAD redeeming qualities, including being FUNNY.

I was offended. It wasn't funny and the only reason it is posted in this forum is to offend.

Jan 14th, 2004, 10:17 AM
I thought it was very clever, and parts of it had me laughing out loud. I didn't find any of it offensive, although I can see where hard line Christians may take offense. To me it's no different than any other satire.

You made reference to sexually explicit links, unsuitable for 13-yr-olds.
Leezard
Jan 14th, 2004, 11:07 AM
Yes, the links that were there lead to sexually explicit material. I am all for humor and satire but when it crosses the line it to offensive and lewd then that's a problem on LD.
Mattio
Jan 14th, 2004, 11:27 AM
Sexually explicit? It's hardly pornographic.

You agree to not use the Message Board to:
a. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
The second link posted was clearly obscene and the first one lead to it, according to the terms of service we all agreed not to post that kind of thing.

You mean the same Earl Purple who is strongly religious so probably didn't intend to offend as was claimed?
Leezard
Jan 14th, 2004, 11:58 AM
I don't think anyone is saying that the intent was to offend anyone, just that the link and what was on the page was not something that should have been posted on LD, anywhere because this is a pg13 board. Yes, it could have offended some people but I didn't see that to be the intent of posting it.

Give it a break would ya?. The post was explicit. End of story. Move on.........
Mattio
Jan 14th, 2004, 12:02 PM
Someone did actually claim that there was intent to offend.
And I never looked at the 2nd link, but to be offended at the first is high-strung in the extreme.
Kate

What WAS the second link? I didn't see it before it was censored. Someone PM me it or something.

Well you're offending our right to free speech.
America: land of the free. Yeah.
Leezard
Jan 14th, 2004, 12:17 PM
The constitution states that the government can't restrict our right to free speech, it does not say that private companies can't so that does not apply here.

Sorry about that, I didn't notice that post at first.
I'm confused about your second comment, what do you mean by "to be offended at the first"? I don't want to comment if what I'm reading that as is wrong.
pinky
Jan 14th, 2004, 12:20 PM
Oh, the old "free speech" argument?
Sorry, that doesn't apply here. The First Amendment of our Constitution guarantees each American citizen the right to speak out against the government. It does NOT cover speech that takes place within privately-owned enterprises, of which LiveDaily is one.
It's very similar to having someone in your home, and that person says things that are contrary to your beliefs. You absolutely have the right to ask that person to shut up or leave, and you are under no obligation to ever invite him/her back.
I was the one who mentioned posting to deliberately offend. Let's be honest: those of you who are new here have been around long enough to recognize how seriously many people in this forum take their faith. That link, if Kate's second post was part of it, was obviously posted to rile those members. You may think it's funny, but you are very aware that others would not.

I know I've mentioned this before in other threads, but there's a thread on 'Masturbation' on the Completely Off-Topic forum with well over 2000 replies.
So something like that is fine then?

... but I just wanted to share that I have no idea what the excerpted bit about Adam and Eve even means! I mean, being that it's Adam and Eve I can guess, but that does not change the fact that I am now officially old. :(

The first link, given by Kate could only be offensive to the most highly-strung of people. The second link, given by Neil (Earl Purple) is the one I didn't see.
Leezard
Jan 14th, 2004, 01:01 PM
Just to clear something up, as far as I know the link wasn't deleted because it was offensive to someone here, it was deleted because it was obscene.
Other boards have to deal with their issues the way they see fit for their board. Something that works here may not work on another board here and the moderators have been asked to take care of things like this as they see fit, the LD administrators and previous mods have decided who should do the job for the board.

You'd be surprised...I was quite amused at the original link, it's interesting to see how some people can take a book and turn it into something totally different.

Jan 14th, 2004, 08:40 PM
No I didn't think it was offensive, it was an interpretation of a chapter from Genesis, and reflected the events of that chapter.
If it's going to get people more interested then I'm all for it.

And I suppose that children should not read scripture because scripture involves sexual relationships, including 2 rapes, one in Genesis and one in Samuel II.
And in both these incidents the rapist was put to death by the victim's big brother.

Its certainly not worded the way it would be on the IRC site.
I actually attended Sunday school, voluntarily, when I was about 13. We covered a lot of topics, but not topics that would be sensitive to young children. The Bible is a large book, a life-long book, a child can read about that kind of stuff when they are mature enough.
Earl Purple
Jan 18th, 2004, 12:29 PM
I don't remember whether or not we learned about those topics in school - maybe, but I didn't always pay attention.
I'm pretty certain that I did learn something about Joseph and the wife of Potiphar and what he was accused of, and therefore why he was put in prison. It's very difficult to tell the Joseph story without that part.
Aside from that, we did learn about the escape of Lot from Sodom and Gomorrah but did not learn about what Lot did subsequently with his daughters, so we must have skipped that part, and also the immediate next section about Sarah and Avimelech, and probably went straight on to the birth of Isaac.

Pshaw, my dad read the whole Bible to us when my sibs and I were little tykes. Hearing about bad things that happened certainly didn't scar us because we were either too young to understand it anyway or we were old enough to discuss it and realize that **** happens, even in the Bible. It's not like it's really explicit...usually ;)

Well, this made it on the site:D!
There may be some things on this website that may offend some highly strung people. I suggest you just read the page I link to if you are offended by the use of a certain three letter word... Or things that actually go on this world. Stay hidden under your rock and don't peek at the real life things said on this nasty horrible link...
