View Full Version : Ok, am I being difficult?

Spring semester started last week. In that time I've changed my classes around a bit, trying to work it around my work schedule. Well, my Oceanography class got dropped because of a low sign up, and the only other one available is on a Saturday, 10am-1:40pm. I've been there for like, 2-3 years now and I have yet to take a science course, so I signed up for it.

I call my boss to tell her, and she's usually really good about schedules and availability. Well, anyways, I call her and she starts getting mad at me, saying I wasn't being fair to her. And this week is really a bad week for me to be working. I've got appointments out the ass, and I have an orientation class for my D.L class. With the position I have now (I just got promoted to 3rd key - really against my will though), I have to be full time. I told her I wouldn't be able to do that and go to school at the same time, which made her even more upset.

I told her that I didn't want to take the position in the first place, and I don't want to keep it. I'd be much better off going back to being a part time associate and working 25 hours a week. Otherwise I'd stress myself out with everything and I get REALLY bitchy (moreso than usual) when I get stressed.

But she thinks I'm being really unfair to her, because my school schedule is all over the place with classes and stuff. Ok, amd I right in thinking that school should come before work or am I imagining things?

Maf, you have to look out for your own best interests, just as your boss has to look out for hers. Unfortunately, in this case, the two seem to be opposing each other.

She's trying to run a business, and has to answer to other people. Obviously, you're a good employee, or you wouldn't have been promoted, and she wants to utilize that.

But, unless this is where you want to work for the rest of your life (not necessarily this particular company, but in this field), then you have to work on your education. At your age, that should be #1.

yes it absolutely should!!!!!!!!! It's amazing how bosses tell you of course it's more important we'll schedule around it, but try to do it and they get pissy b.c of the availability!! I think it's absolutely ridiculous!!! :redmad: Mine do that exact same thing

Thank you!

And it's not even all over the place! I have THREE classes, and only 2 of them I have to be in class for! I have my computer class Monday and Wednesday nights from 8:15-9:55pm. And then my Oceanography class from 10-1:30 every Saturday. My french class is distance learning so I'm only on campus for that a few times out of the semester

ERG!

i say quit school because a job in retail is far more important than an education. :D

or at least thats how all of our bosses make us feel! lol

Maf, that schedule isn't all over the place! It's only three times a week that you cant work, that leave more that you can work than anything. I think you're boss is the one being unfair. if you've been going to school that long and worked at this place during it, they should understand!
I guess i'm blessed with great managers at my store because i just have to write down what i can and cant work and thats how i get scheduled...

As a manager in retail I can understand both of your sides. But I have to agree with MC, your schedule should not be that hard to schedule around, especially since you are the 3rd key, not the ASM. Basically, all she has to do is schedule to open Mon and Wed. and probably a closing or give you Sat off. I think she is stressing over a non-stress point.
