Sunflower seeds

Ok, being the redneck from North Dakota that I am, we all eat sunflower seeds here in the shell crack them between our teeth, and spit the shell out. This is especially an enjoyable thing for us to do in the summer time.

A couple of summers ago I went to Seattle and visited some family and I was hanging out with my cousin and her friends and her friends thought that I was completely insane because I was eating sunflower seeds. They said it was bird food. Now I am just wondering if it is completely unheard of to eat sunflower seeds in your neck of the woods?

I prefer them without the shells, but everyone else in my family likes cracking them, spitting them out, etc.

Sunflower seeds are great. Since I played baseball in high school, I always had sunflower seeds. Pop a handful in my mouth, split the shell, spit out the shell, and eat the seed. Now this thread makes me want sunflower seeds. :D

I live in Australia and we usally cook sunflower seeds in a stir fry.

during softball seasons, someone on the team would get a big bag for each game and we would all eat them in the dugout
