The BBC reports that Sir Paul attended Brian Wilson's concert at London's Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday evening. Sir Paul was there to hear the first live performance of the Beach Boys legendary "lost" Smile album - a recording which is often tauted as the Beach Boy's equivalent to The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album. Sir Paul was present during one of the original 1966 recording sessions. He can actually be heard on the album munching on a carrot on the Vege-Tables track. Brian Wilson's London concerts are being recorded and videotaped this week, so we may one day have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Sir Paul in the audience.

Hi lucyinsky! I was just asking Dave about you the other day. I've temporarily lost my username "stk" that's why I'm posting as 2004kts. I miss your posts and wondering how you've been.
Paul and Brian have always been great admirerers of each others work. I truly believe that they have even inspired each other to higher levels of creativity.
My wish is that Brian willl take "Smile" to Hawaii. Doubt it, but it might happen. In the meantime, a DVD would be wonderful.

This is perhaps the most telling of the whole story if you ask me. EMI and the British scene was fascinated with experimentation. Sitar, controlled feedback, eventually playing things backwards, these are things the Beatles are creditted for "creating" in pop/rock music. The Beatles had been (since their start) slowly creating new sounds and they weren't afraid of p!ssing anyone off with their music. The company saw that people were eating it up and they knew what they had in the Beatles, so they had a hands-off policy.
Meanwhile, on our side of the pond, the Beach Boys were at their biggest crossroads. Pet Sounds came out to critical, but not commercial, success. Capitol was concerned; their number one home-grown band was cracking and changing, and in the process they were losing sales. As Brian alluded to in Shawn's first quote, the band was on the verges of pulling apart. Mike may have been as upset as he says about Brian and the drugs he was on, but more importantly (to Mike), Brian's creativity threatened to destroy the mainstream popularity of the Beach Boys. This was dangerous to Mike, because 1) he couldn't understand the creative magnificence of Brians music and 2) Quite frankly, Mike needed the money (I believe at this time he was already on wife #2, and paying child support to #1).
Then there was the lawsuit. Beach Boys history is filled with lawsuits, and this was the first. I forget which one this was, but I believe it was the ultra-messy one between the band and Murray Wilson over sng rights. There's no coincidence that Murray's name was Wilson; he was Carl, Dennis and Brian's father and Mike's uncle.
The pressure of being a genius was only part of the pressure Brian was under. There were all these other factors, from Mike, from his father (in the lawsuit), from Capitol and even from himself. When you consider that he always had a pretty weak psyche, made weaker by drugs, is it any wonder he cracked the way he did?

I think you're right, Dave- This was the point at which Murray filed suit to get control over the catalog.
As the quotes indicate, there were a variety of reasons and perceptions of what was going wrong, but history bares that this was the time when Brian really started cracking up. He was under intense pressure, he was extremely sensitive, and his use of drugs was messing with his sanity and the delicate balance required to keep the machine moving. Ultimately, it was Brian's decision to squash Smile.
