I'll start.

One pro about digital cameras is that it uses no film.

One con is battery life, they just dont last as long as they do in film cameras.

Does anyone take pictures these days or is this thread simply not being used as well as it could be?

I think you're carrying on the convo quite good by yourself Chad ;) j/k lol!

one con is that I've heard they usually come with VERY small memory cards... if you want more you usually have to buy a separate card

also, ignore all that "digital" zoom stuff... that's all hype, you could do that w/ ANY image editor.. it's just pixellating the image to increase the size.

on that note, "optical" zoom is really the ONLY zoom that counts, so it's usually good to look at how much of that zoom you get..

also if you fill your memory card and don't have either your computer near or a laptop that can read the memory cards, you can't take any more pictures (unlike if you can almost ALWAYS find film at some corner store)..

there's also though if you have an iPod a new adapter that will let you plug MANY kinds of memory cards to dump the images to the iPod (only on the newer ones I believe)...
so then you just take the iPod (which you might have while travelling ANYWAY), and this adapter for the cards w/ your camera, and you'll have QUITE a bit more storage avail..

I have yet still to go digital, but I do get photo CDs whenever I get my film developed. If I were to choose a digital camera, it would probably be one made by Fujifilm (probably between 4 and 5 megapixels with optical zoom), since from what I've seen, just about everything Fijifilm makes is of high quality.

As for zoom, digital zoom has its purposes but it doesn't create more detailed pictures - it just crops them, kinda... that's why you need the optical zoom too - for more details.

Now if I could just afford the one I want, plus the software and peripherals needed to go with it...

I haven't been in the market for a new digicam lately, but I went digital a few years ago and I've never looked back.

Right now, I own a Minolta S414 digicam which replaced my older Sony digicam. It's probably a bit dated by now, but it's 4.0 megapixels with 4x optical zoom.

Battery life isn't really much of an issue once you buy a few sets of rechargable NiMH batteries with a 1-hour (or less) rapid charger. Between that and having a 512MB memory card, it's all I need for vacations and what-not.

The thrill about digicams is being able to see what you've photographed immediately, as well as taking hundreds of photos without having to worry about film or getting them developed... saves a lot of time and money.
