Today begins the year in which they will break the curse. They have a better team than last year, one with much more depth. So take a seat back and enjoy the ride because today is the real beginning of the season. Not only will they start it but end it as world champs.

Yeah, wonderful start for the Sox... I love how the AOL crew wrote it up: "the Red Sox never recovered in falling behind the New York Yankees (1-1) in the AL East games-back column for the first time this season." :p

Pedro isn't pitching like Pedro. His speed's down and last night he was wild. The Sox have more depth if he's pitching well. If he's truly lost it, or doesn't get "it" back on a regular basis, they will be the same team with one ace and a bunch of mediocre pitchers.

In the field, Damon's still there, but how many of last years heroes stayed? Nomar is out 3 weeks at least, and he's been trampled by Sox management. Nixon's out. Manny is still there, and he too was kinda shafted this off-season. Usually the disorganization among the players starts late in the season. This year there might not be any harmony in the clubhouse at all. Plus tonight's Pedro start makes me feel more assured in the idea that Schilling and Pedro will be an issue unto itself. Pedro will not take being second fiddle well at all. Personally, I'm surprised Francona put the ball in his hands tonight.

Pedro was definetly a bit wild last night but theres a lot of things that could cause that. It was cold, there was a lot of wind etc... I think we all know that location is a lot more important than speed.

Pitched for 6 innings
5 K's
ERA: 3
WHIP 1.33

Our biggest problem in this game is that we kept leaving people stranded on base. I think pedro is definetly still an Ace. Its only the first game and the Sox will get their revenge on tuesday.

db44
Apr 5th, 2004, 12:46 AM
He's hit 89... Has he hit 90? Here at work they say "barely." Location may be important, but if his fastball isn't jumping the way it was, batters will be jumping on him.

One of my co-workers pointed out as well that even in October, he either had location or speed. Not both. He's a Red Sox fan and knows the game as well as I do.

Don't forget, batters also had to face the wind and cold as well. Yes it will have more of an effect on a pitcher, but the wind was also blowing pop-ups all over the place. Are you sure without that wind blowing in that there wouldn't have been any more home runs off of Pedro?

Batters are often slow in April. Neither pitcher nor batter has hit their stride, so for all the excuses for Pedro, they are the same for the batters.

I throw this out there, not believing it but just because of the timing: Note he loses his pitching strength during the steroids scare. He's never been bulked out so no I don't believe it, but the irony is there.

I guess those questions about Pedro have been answered.

7ER in 5.... And this was in his avoid the Yankees start.

Venisenvy
Apr 16th, 2004, 09:32 AM
This wasn't done to avoid his yankees start it was done so Francona could place the lineup in the way he has always wanted Pedro, Wakefield, Schilling. Pedro should pitch in the next series. And i wont make excuses Pedro was horrible last night but i do not believe that means the questions have been answered people have off days, and off weeks but they come back. I think all this negative press since the end of the season has gotten to him he needs to try to forget about all the critics etc... and he should improve.

Looing at it from a Yankee perspective, I do beleive it's an attempt to keep Pedro away from the Yanks.

There are a number of instances where the Sox rotation has changed to let Pedro play/not play against the Yanks. So it will remain a question to us down here.

Did he at least stay long enough last night for the press to ask him about last night's game and the series? :o

Venisenvy
Apr 16th, 2004, 09:18 PM
WOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Now that is what i call a game.

A 4 run 1st inning with 2 home runs, another home run later on. And Wakefield did an awsome job.

This also definetly helped me in the fantasy league.

Venisenvy
Apr 17th, 2004, 02:38 PM
Red Sox 5, Yankees 2 one more W for the Sox.

I guess if people think Pedro might be done that they must have already dug a grave for Mussina.

A great showing for Schilling, 11 pitches, 8 SO, and Jeter striked out 3 times.

db44
Apr 18th, 2004, 03:14 PM
Not yet on Moose, but it's heading that way.

Moose had some decent starts in the spring. The questions about Musina don't reach as far back as those about Pedro (as in his last five starts of '03), and Moose, as annoying as it has been, whines about having to be in his groove. Japan screwed that up. So, no, no grave yet. But as I said, the questioning eyes are looking at him more and more.

May I remind all those in Red Sox nation that it's only April, and we have (let's just say) a "few" more games to go with this season.

Though, if the Yankees keep having poor pitching and A-Rod not hitting, things could get ugly in da Bronx for us.

I love how the Pats won the Super Bowl this year, but all they could chant were "Yankees suck!"

I also love seeing Luis get his hopes up... I've seen such confidence so many times before, and seen it all come crashing down in a matter of a late-season meltdown.

I believe the Sox were SI's pick? Just another curse to contend with.

princessKT

Exactly, on Friday Fox kept saying "6 or 7 months ago today the Sox lost, and now they've won.." But who cares about winning these games? When it comes to the important ones, they choke.

Venisenvy
Apr 19th, 2004, 01:37 PM
They will not choke this year. They have fixed their bullpen, they have a great closer in Foulke. Their Lineup is one of the best and I believe this will definetly get them to at least 100 wins. Red Sox will once again make the playoffs and this time they will win. This year they will not choke.

Yes, the Boston fans are a bit brutal for me.....I would much rather see the games at Yankee stadium.....why do they need to stoop so low as to wait as the Yankees board their bus just to say rude obnoxious things??? Where is the sportsmanship in the sport?? Then when one of the Yankee fans there decided to defend them, she was verbally attacked by some idiot!

The Bruins having a 3-1 lead in the playoffs... How'd that work for ya?

We'll have to wait and see about Dubaya.

If Pedro pitches the way he has, your rotation is only 3 deep... About as good as the Yanks. The Yanks stilll have the edge in the 'pen. The Sox lineup is second to the Yankee lineup, especially whne you look at how all the bench players have been stepping up.

The one thing the Sox have which the Yanks don't is history. And in this case, that's the biggest cloud you could never want.

The Yankees got whooped really bad. 11-2 and amazing game by Lowe and Contreras is not a starting pitcher, the yankees need to figure something out because this bullpen wont get them far.

db44
Apr 24th, 2004, 03:45 AM
Contreras... Major mistake there for the Yanks... Jeff Weaver all over again.

The way the game started, you thought Lowe would be the goat and Contreras might hang on a little bit. Lowe had 30-something pitches by the end of the second, but we've seen him do that before; Be slow at first then wake up in the third.

Let's just see for the Yanks how Pettitte does after he gets off the D-L. Large Rumblin's in the Bronx could be headed our way.

I don't even know what to say after last night's game. At least my man Matsui came through with a homerun after I busted out the rally cap.

It's sad that the defining moments for the game for me were things like me yelling at Sox fans, instead of something good happening in the game for us. I didn't even hear Dave yell charge! So dissapointing!!!! :p

Venisenvy
Apr 24th, 2004, 03:26 PM
Today's game was an extremely well played game by both teams. The Red Sox need to start scoring more runs i have noticed for the last couple games except yesterday that they leave too many men stranded when they are in scoring position. And with this win the Sox have clinched the series now its time to go for the jugular.

stephj24

What a heartbreak today's game was. To come back from being down 2-0 to tie the game, and then just seem to not care about the outcome, and end the game, that was a heartbreaker to me. Though, all of us in Bleacher Section 53 had a great time (especially watching A-Rod's homer go right over Kapler's glove). :-D

And the Red Sox sweep the Yankees. Have the Pedro questions been answered now? 7 innings, 4 hits, 7 strikeouts, 0 runs, that sounds like an ace to me. 6 out of 7 for the sox, it is the beginning to a beautiful year. We finally have a complete bullpen and thats what is giving us these wins.

Im not sure if it will be bad or good to see Pedro go, i still believe he is a good pitcher who can be effective for many more years although he will have to change his style speed is no longer his strong point. But he will cost us a lot of money we might be able to do better i would much rather keep Manny than Pedro. Hopefully we can sign Manny and Nomar soon, Varitek and Lowe also need to be signed.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about the possibility of Pedro not coming back next year. I always thought he'd end his career in Boston, and they'd retire his # and it'd be all good. But if he ends up going to the Yankees...he will NOT get a good reception upon his return to Fenway park.

princessKT
May 2nd, 2004, 10:01 PM
I don't think Yankees fans want Pedro.

But honestly, why would he say this in the beginning of the season? It just brings strife to the team. One more nail in the coffin.

db44
May 2nd, 2004, 11:35 PM
As a Yankee fan, I don't want him here, nor do I think the Yanks would get him. I hated the idea of Boggs here, and still despise him (not true with many other Yankee fans), but was all excited about getting Clemens, and hold no ill will for him being in Houston.

Pedro has too much baggage with him, especially when it comes to the rivalry. His Ruth comment, his not always pitching against the Yanks, hitting batters (more so and seeming like with more intent than Clemens, IMHO), Zim. There's way too big of a hill to climb.

Add to it the way Pedro is pitching now, and I really can't imagine him here... No, the name I hear for the Yanks is Johnson.

I so wanted Jeter to hit a grand slam last night......there it was, right in front of him, but at least he got a base hit;)
He could have saved the HR from the earlier inning for then:D

I was also upset because my "Matsui-hits-a-homer-at-every-game-I-attend" streak came to an end.

Great game last night, but there seem to still be quite a few bases-loaded opportunities where they don't do much.

I wonder what it feels like to be three-hit by the Blue Jays. The Yanks at least were losing to decent teams with good pitching.

Their losing doesn't concern me. They tend to have August swoons, just never as bad a the Sox do. They got beat about a couple of years by Seattle, but then made mince meat of them in the post-season, so I'm not concerned their either. Especially when you rip the heart out of a team's closer.

The important thing here is that for all the Bostonians saying the Sox will have a cakewalk because of their pitching staff need to now realize that Lowe is reachable (which was reliatively new for the Yanks) and that the Yanks have Pedro's number (that we knew for a while)... in the 'CS, the 1-2-3 is now a 1-punch in Schilling.

Games 1 & 2 of the DS in NY should be during the week. Game 5, if necessary, may be on Sunday.

Games 1 & 2 of the CS (which I don't know when they go on sale) will be between 13-15 in NYC (Tuesday-Thursday). The weekend games will be in the other team's city, and then again somewhere between Tuesday and Thursday back here, again, if necessary.

The Astros showed that the Cardinals are human, they are an amazing team but we can win 4 games plus we have homefield advantage which against the Cardinals will probably be the difference between us winning and them winning. I wanted the Astros because of Clemens game seven, Boston Vs. Houston and Clemens is on the mound and the Red Sox just pound him to oblivion. Ironically enough Clemens helped the Red Sox he pitched the All-star game and because of his performance we have Home Field advantage.

Tonight will be a interesting game if they can get it in(weather is not the best). Pedro has had plenty of rest, we do lose 2 bats(DH and our 8th hitter will not be a factor cause our 9th is pedro...lol) So it all depends on how good supan(sp?) is. He was amazing against the Astros in game 7, but the rest of the year after 60 pitches hitters are hitting over .300 against him so it depends which Supan shows up. I guess the same will apply to pedro but i actually think we will see a great game by him.

Venisenvy
Oct 26th, 2004, 03:30 PM
So i just played the game on my PS2 with MVP baseball 2004 and it was quite an interesting game.

The Red Sox bats were on fire right away scoring 3 runs in the first, 1 run in the third and 2 runs in the 4th but thats all they would get. Supan was wild all night but the bullpen did its job keeping the red sox quiet the rest of the game.

Pedro was amazing, he had around 92-94mph fastballs and he was getting the pitches he wanted. In fact he had a no hitter heading to the 7th. How in the world could you take him out. But i have no idea what it is about Pedro and the 7th it seemed Francona had made a Little mistake because all the sudden Pedro cant get anything right. All the sudden the Cardinals which could not even get a baserunner on all night had 3 runs and no outs, then finally one out, then they got a 4th run and the tying run on first. But Pedro was able to pitch his way out of it. Timlin got to work he had a 1,2,3 8th he went into the 9th and got the first 2 batters out then came in Foulke and got the last batter out Red Sox hold on for the 6-4 win.

Box Score:

Damon: 1/5
Cabrera:2/5 2 Runs 2 RBI's, 1HR, 2B
Ramirez:2/5 2 Runs 1 RBI
Ortiz: 2/4
Varitek:1/4 1 Run, 2B
Nixon: 2/4 2 RBI's
Mueller: 1/4 1 RBI
Bellhorn: 2/4 1 Run
Martinez:1/4(yep he actually got a bloop hit)

(I wont type the Cardinals one cause its too much)

But if this is accurate the Red Sox Win.

How DARE you desecrate that young girl's loss of life to TAUNT??

utterly disgraceful

Can you read?

db44
Oct 28th, 2004, 11:10 AM
What taunt? It is a valid and legitimite argument, especially here in New York. One which has been taking place here since that girl died.

We are the ones with the bad reputation. When fans threw stuff on the field in game 6 (and all it created was a mess, as nothing was harmful), all the FOX people could say was how bad New York and its fans were for that.

But look at Boston: One dead, last night there were 35 arrests and 44 people with reported injuries: 14 bad enough to require trips to the hospital. Countless items were torched and in at least one occaision a car with New York license plates was destroyed. No such riots has ever happened from a Yankee championship. Then again, we've never started a fire in a ballpark which burned down the whole area around Huntington Ave.

It has nothing to do with not winning in 86 years, so don't tell me it's because the curse has been broken. It can't be for that reason as similar riots happened when the Patriots won their last Super Bowl.

Speaking of which, a Mets fan friend of mine went to see the Pats game on Sunday and he was taunted and harrassed because he was from New York and therefore presumed a Yankee fan. Lovely.

Tell me which is disgraceful. The blatant disregard for property and life or posting a cutesy newspaper headline or story connected to that sad and sickening disregard for things.

Actually, don't. Don't bother even posting anything else. Go off and have your fun elsewhere.

Venisenvy
Oct 28th, 2004, 11:55 AM
Dave the death of the girl is a tragedy and one which was not committed by fans but by the police and their own carelessness. So to blame it on Boston and the Fans is wrong. Its like blaming you when the cops in new york kill a minority in what seems pretty obviously like a racially motivate murder.

And i think you are being too easy on the Yankees fan the fact is the baseballs were dangerous and they were not only just thrown on the field but on more than one ocassion almost hit some of the Red Sox players.

The Red Sox have won, its a new era the Yankees through their greed have put upon themselves the curse of Alex Rodriguez and the era of yankee dominance is over.

I love school:
1.This morning in math class my teacher was in her Red Sox shirt all happy yelling Go Red Sox

2.My political science professor had a small slide show of pictures showing the players celebrating and with music playing in the background(We are the champions).

3.My english teacher cancelled class today so that we could all just take in the wonderful day in New England.

speaking of education....this came from the mouth of a Sox fan this morning....."the last world series won by the sox was 1918, it has been 86 years.....1918 plus 86 equals 2004...it was meant to be"......

In the article I posted in general news, one of the fans was asked about the idea of not allowing people to drink during the World Series. He said "they tried prohibition in the 1700's and it didn't work."

Riiight. Boston finally manages to win a world series after 86 years and from all this talk, you'd think they'd been winning them for the past ten years straight.

When Boston has 26 World Series Championships, come talk to me. Otherwise, the Red Suxx are not even close to the level the Yankees are on.

No one's world has been turned upside down, and certainly not the Yankees. We'll be back next year. Keep dreaming about the world order being different. :-P

The Boston Red Sox are the WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first post that started this thread was:

What a ride it was with so many turns which i could have never expected. But the end was clear in sight from day one we were going to become world champs and while all of you doubted we did it. The Boston Red Sox have won the big one.

Sunday begins another journey for the Red Sox and this will end the same way as the last. The Red Sox will once again win the big one.

The Red Sox are on track for another great year....the yankees on the other hand well lets just say they havent shown up since the ALCS.

Just a slow start...they'll show up. When you've got Kevin Brown pitching and no run support, that constitutes a slow start.

I bet you were saying the same stuff in '98 Luis. How bad did the Yanks end up that year, after a similarly horrid start?

The sox have won five in a row and from what I've read Steinbrenner is crapping himself.

Steinbrenner needs to react like this more often... 3rd inning and the Yanks are winning 15-2 with my boy Tino hitting a grand slam :D

I missed where Toronto became a contending powerhouse. :o Although he did hit one off their top pitcher last night... In a loss.

Layney

Yeah that loss really sucked considering Arroyo pitched awesome and Manny's huge shot...on the other hand the Yankees lost against Tampa Bay with Randy Johnson on the mound...*cough*

It is great to see that even without what many call our only ace and without Wells we are doing well. As for the other guys, there is so much i could say but i guess i shouldn't pour salt over such open wounds.

If we're gonna talk good-team, bad-team match-ups, how were the two teams on their West Coast road trips?

i saw Arroyo at an event recently and the emcee told him the Queer Eye guys did a nice job on him. Amusingly, Bronson was not on the queer eye show. The emcee changed the subject.
