eurosport did say possible 6-8 weeks off, but now Venus is saying she will be ready for French. She sprained or strained her ankle! Now it looks like she will need 2 weeks to recover.
I THINK SHE MIGHT PLAY NOW! phew...

Venus, Serena make major (fashion) statements
By Matt Cronin
Tuesday, May 25, 2004
Sisters Serena and Venus Williams aggressively strode down the Roland Garros catwalk and scored impressive first round victories on Tuesday.
Wearing a bold, new fuscia two-piece ensemble that showed up her diamond-studded naval ring, the limelight-loving Serena powered past the Czech Republic’s Iveta Benasova 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour.
For her part, Venus counted her good luck in a Kelly green dress that would have fit in nicely in a Dublin pub and stung Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-2 6-4.
Venus warmly applauded Serena’s bold choice of clothes.
"You can’t miss Serena," Venus said.
Playing for the first time on Court Philippe Chatrier since her highly emotional and controversial loss to Justine Henin-Hardenne last year, Williams unleashed a torrid display of groundstrokes and returns of serves, never allowing the talented lefty Benasova to string together a series of points. When the Czech nailed first serves, she was able to hang in points, but Williams forced her to trade death blows from inside the baseline and the Czech wasn’t nearly consistent enough.
Williams received a polite reception from the crowd and remarkably said that she never though about her meltdown against Henin last year.
"Honestly, it never crossed my mind," Serena said. "I don’t think I even thought about it once when I was on court. I put that aside a year ago."
Serena, who returned to the tour in March after eight and half months off due to a knee injury, wasn’t overly enamored with her play, even though she blasted 29 winners to only eight from Benasova. Williams also committed 29 unforced errors.
"I guess there’s some satisfaction," Serena said. "Going into the match I was a bit nervous. I’m much more calm now that I have that first round under my belt."
Serena was much animated talking about her outfit, which she said is sure to impress the fashion lords of Paris.
"I think they always appreciate the style and flair that I bring. It’s so fun. That’s why it’s always unbelievable when I come to Roland Garros in a stylish and fun outfit. To me, you have to when you come to Paris. There’s no excuse."
A more subdued person, Venus chose a more demur outfit and also played much more carefully as she’s nursing an ankle injury she sustained three weeks ago in the semi finals of Berlin.
She didn’t push herself past her limits, but did manage to lace 25 winners in the contest. Venus said she felt a lot of stress when she walked on court.
"I really wanted to be in the event and play pain free," Venus said. "My feet were slow. I was slow in general, making some errors. I had to leave that behind me in order to play the match."
Venus may not practice on Wednesday in order to avoid further aggravating the injury. She was ridging a 15 match-winning streak going into the Berlin final before she was injured and at the time, was looking like the Roland Garros favorite. Last year, she came into this tournament with an abdominal injury and was upset by Vera Zvonareva. She later said that she made a mistake by even playing.
This week, the 2002 finalist knows she must forget about her ankle if she’s to have a serious shot at winning her first title.
"I have to have confidence so I can play and not have too much on my mind," Venus said.
