Ferguson plots Gerrard move to replace Keane

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was reported to be considering a 20 million pound bid for Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to replace captain Roy Keane.

Keane has admitted he is unsure about whether he will see out the remaining two years of his contract at Manchester.

"You can't look too far ahead in football," said the 32-year-old Irishman who was believed to have infuriated Ferguson with his decision to come out of international retirement.

"I think as a player, you can't be looking too far ahead," Keane added.

" And in football, I think you should always expect the unexpected. I'm sitting here saying: 'I've got two years left on my contract'; many players have said that and before you know it, they're off."

And The Sun reported Ferguson wanted Gerrard, 23, to become Keane's long-term replacement.

Gerrard would be damned forever by Anfield fans if he left the club he skippers.

And Ferguson might face a battle with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who said he was looking for a "real gem" to bolster his league winners.

"If I can find a real gem I will make an effort," Wenger said.

I hope I don't tempt fate now but I really don't think Steven Gerrard would want to go to Manchester United. He's a Liverpudlian through and through who loves Liverpool. Rivaldo's agent has said that he has agreed terms with Bolton and Claudio Ranieri is apparently interested in a double swoop for David Beckham and Ronaldo. Michael Owen is apparently in talks with Liverpool to agree a new contract.

Yeah Gerrard won't. It is like Gary Neville joining Liverpool right muffins?

Dreamer7

Well if Ranieri is sacked then the choice isn't his anymore. I think he is a nice manager and all but the tactics he uses are not very good. Will be interesting to see Rivaldo joining Bolton.

Yup, it would be like Neville joining Liverpool hehe.

I think Ranieri is a nice person too but I think he is a good manager. He is doing a difficult job under pressure at Chelsea. It can't be easy to try and keep happy all those players and try and give them a game when possible and with all the speculation surrounding his job. And they're still second!

The Thai Prime Minister wants to buy 30% of Liverpool for £65m. I'm guessing some of that money would be made available for transfers. Speaking of Liverpool Heskey is going to Birmingham for an initial £3.5m which could go up to £6m depending on apperances. Cisse should also be moving to Pool in the summer.

Real Madrid sign Samuel from Roma

Real Madrid have agreed a five-year deal with Argentine defender Walter Samuel, the Primera Liga club said on its website on Thursday.
Samuel is set to join the Spanish giants on July 1 from AS Roma.

Financial terms of the signing were not disclosed but sports daily Marca said on its website Real had secured Samuel for 22 million euros ($26.22 million), beating off competition from Chelsea for the powerful 26-year-old who joined Roma from Argentina's Boca Juniors in 2000.

'We have reached an agreement in principle with Roma and with the player and we can finally announce we've signed a central defender, a priority for us for next season,' Real Madrid's sporting director-general Jorge Valdano told the club's website.

Real Madrid will end this season without a trophy despite having a squad including Brazil's Ronaldo, France's Zinedine Zidane, Portugal's Luis Figo and England's David Beckham.

Critics said the squad lacked depth and highlighted the team's weaknesses in defence.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez pledged earlier this month to sign another of the world's leading players.

Valdano praised Samuel as a 'thoroughbred defender' and said he believed he would help develop young Madrid defenders.

'He brings quality and maturity which will help our young players feel more comfortable and play better.

'He fills an important need the team had and does so in style because he is one of the best defenders in the world.'

Samuel's wish to play for Real Madrid won through despite interest shown by other clubs, Valdano said.

'He had a special determination and made it felt throughout the negotiations. That gave us an advantage in the fight with other very important competitors who complicated the negotiations at one point. They were rather difficult days, but finally Samuel will be at Real Madrid and there's great satisfaction in the club over the news,' he said.

Valdano said Real had learnt a lot from the 2003/2004 campaign. The club had a promising start to the season but a late-season slump erased their hopes of winning the Spanish league, cup and Champions League.

'We will try to have a balanced squad to avoid the problems we suffered in the end this season,' he said.

'We are aware of the needs and we are going out right now to fill them so that next season we have more guarantees in all areas and a deeper squad that will help us survive in all competitions and reach the last two months (of the season) wth guarantees to win a trophy.'

----------------

A good signing for Real Madrid, guess they woke up finally and realised they needed to get a good defender because their defence really sucked. I think they need another striker too, well that Morientes can return, I guess? I think Beckham should go back playing on the right side though, he is really the best in that position.

If Rooney goes to Man Utd, I presume RVN/OGS is going to leave. I think Real Madrid might be after him. Raul is horrible and they need a new striker to pair with Ronaldo. I don't see why Man Utd is going to spend so much money on Rooney, definitely not £50m. Chelsea, probably. But who knows Man Utd, they can go crazy and spend like they did for Rio. Anyways I think Rooney does needs to move to a better club so that he can gain the experience and be better prepared for the World Cup, etc.

Write-up:

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) _ English striker Michael Owen will join Spanish club Real Madrid, said the manager of his current club Liverpool said Friday.

No further details were immediately available.

"When I came here (Owen) had one year left on his contract,'' said Rafael Benitez, who took over Liverpool this summer. "Real Madrid knew that, and when a big club like them come knocking you cannot control it.''

Owen, one of the fastest players in the Premier League, scored 19 goals in 2003-04. A regular with England, the 24-year-old has appeared in two World Cups and played at Euro 2004 in Portugal.

Liverpool left him on the bench for Tuesday's Champions League qualifying match against Austria's Grazer AK, which the English club won 2-0.

If Owen had made an appearance, he wouldn't have been allowed to play for any other club in European competition in 2004-05. He had been in negotiations for months to extend his contract at Liverpool, but the talks stalled on Monday.

He completed a medical today in Spain and is supposed to be unveiled tomorrow. It'll be strange watching Liverpool without Owen. I am undecided whether to watch Spanish football or not. I wonder if he will get booed back at the Everton stadium when Man Utd play them. Lucky for Smith Leeds are in Division 1 because I can see how much the Leeds fans will dispise him for joining Man Utd. Haha!

Talking about over pricing, Man Utd seems to love to pay extra money for their players.

Yeah, ever since about Rio Ferdinand. He is a class player but I thought they paid too much for him.

Graeme Souness today resigned from his job as Blackburn manager and was announced as Newcastle's new manager today.

Now Blackburn are looking for a new manager and they keep linking Mark Hughes with the job. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I know he wants to manage a Premiership club and I don't begrudge him that but I want him to see the qualification campaign with Wales, even if it does go a bit wrong.

I didn't think he was in the running, so a bit unexpected. They did win today.

Yeah, Hughes is the new B'Burn boss & they beat Portsmouth yesterday.

Heard Man Utd is targeting Cudicini, Chelsea goalkeeper. He will be a very good buy!

Such a shame Hughes has gone. Only two more games left in charge of Wales. :( I wish him well at Blackburn but I'm stumped as to who will take over with Wales. Gary Speed is too inexperienced, Chris Coleman is happy at Fulham and has a job to do there as does Ian Rush at Chester(he's just started his managerial career). Someone did mention Dean Saunders but he wasn't on the shortlist in the paper today. John Toshack's name was also there as well as Gerrard Houllier. Apparently they'd like him to partner Ian Rush or Gary Speed in charge of Wales so the Welshman can learn and get experience while not being the only one making decisions. No offence to Houllier, but I'd prefer a Welsh person, or at least a Brit. It also said there was one other high profile name who had confirmed his interest in the job, I've been trying to work out who this is hehe.

Anyway, Cudicini, yes. Very good goalie. Any team would do well to have him on their side. I rate him highly.
