View Full Version : For Almost Famous: The PuppetSmack Story!

The beginning, anyway:
During the summer of 2000, we had a newbie join the board using the name PuppetGirl667. The "Puppet" part of it referred, I think, to the marionettes from No Strings Attached, while the "667" part obviously must have referred to the percentage of an entire brain the girl possessed.
Things started off well, until we realized that she completely believed that she was posting with the actual guys of *NSYNC in here. Now, shortly before this, some of the college students needed to blow off some steam during finals, so they registered using the guys' actual names and posted in fun. So many gullible folks began PMing them that they posted disclaimers in their signatures to let everyone know it was NOT JC, Chris, Joey, Lance, or Justin posting. However, despite these disclaimers, PuppetGirl truly believed that these posts were by the guys, posting on a high-volume message board under their real names! She kept posting to them, telling themhow much she loved them and their music, and stuff like that.
So some of the nicer members tried to explain it to her, both on the board and in PMs, because she was showing signs of being willing to give out personal information about herself, and they were concerned for her safety. She even posted a picture of herself in a thread addressed to one of them. However, no matter how often she was told, no matter how many different people told her, she refused to believe that it was anyone but *NSYNC posting under their names. She actually became nasty to everyone who was looking out for her safety.
She also got into trouble for posting pictures that were not hers. At that time, we were a lot stricter about that, because the LiveDaily legal eagles has been contacted by lawyers more than once about copyright infringements. I asked her, nicely even, to stop posting pictures that weren't hers. She then posted one of JC in her signature (we didn't have avatars then). I told her she had to remove it. So she dressed it up with some writing, and posted it again. I told her AGAIN to remove it. She did, but then a few days later she posted a picture of Lance in her signature....I'm guessing she figured I wouldn't complain about a picture of Lance! :D Once more I asked her to remove it, and once more she added some things to it, and claimed it as hers. Now, understand that every time she changed her signature, she posted a new thread, announcing that she was "just checking the new signature" rather than posting in the same thread as before. With a new signature pretty much every day, it got old real fast.....
She got really unpleasant with some of the regulars, and Angel320 said something to her like, "Listen here, PuppetSmack..." and the name stuck.
The fun started when a mod from another board sent me a PM with a link to a picture that was up on eBay from a concert in Missouri......PuppetGirl had posted the exact same picture in her signature, and she lived in Massachusetts, so I knew it wasn't hers! She got all upset when I told her to remove it, and when she got upset, her spelling and typing weren't the best. She started posting really hilarious stuff, like a thread called "THAT'S IT!1! I'm OFFICIALLY PISSED OF@ PINKY!!!1!!!1" in which she went completely off on me and everyone else. Then we had a series of "OFFICIALLY PISSED OF@" threads to each other. The mod who sent me the picture was hurt because she didn't have one, so I made one for her, at which PuppetSmack started another thread, telling me not to be mad at Juju!!!

Eventually, Richard got an email from someone claiming to be the girl's mother, complaining about how she'd been treated here. This person, or someone else who knew the girl, also posted on the board berating us for having been so cruel to an innocent young child.
That, of course, led to a whole series of new identities from the regulars, and about a week of insanity.
The really funny thing was, about a year after all this went down, someone from here was on IM with the girl, who randomly asked if it was JC she was talking to!
There's probably more, but I'm not remembering it at this point. Anyone who can add to the story should just jump in and tell what they know!

The part I enjoyed the most was using the term "puppetsmack'" whenever anyone had a typo...and there were a number of people posting here who were grammatically challenged. Some of them were genuinely hurt and after a while we had to stop.
Dang it!

It still comes up every now and then. As a verb. As in "you've been PuppetSmacked!"

o..m...g. I totally remember that.
And before anyone wonders how I can possibly remember that, I had an nsync related screen name. I registered in August 2000 and had about 6,000 posts in this board lol

Were those threads even saved for the golden moments?
It's weird, but I still remember one of the threads was entitiled "I'm officially pissed off at MelissaS97" I don't know why I remember that lol

Jun 28th, 2004, 07:51 PM
That's because Melissa was one of the ones trying to explain it to PuppetSmack, and I'm sure one of us put that thread in there to be funny!
And the amazing thing is, when I was typing that up, it didn't sound even one-tenth as funny as it actually was!!!
What was your old name in here????
I don't think we had a Golden Moments forum then. Unfortunately.

It's a quite embarrasing name. What can I say? I was only 18 lol. but I'll just say that I had the highest number of posts in the "Grand Opening of JC Land" thread in Golden Moments, if you care to go look :o
I was one of those people that really didn't get close to anyone, except for like one person, but I posted alot lol
As I was going through that forum, I saw that Nsync hot tub thread lol

It is still funny to me. I remember laughing so hard at all the posts that popped up after her "PISSED OF @ PINKY" thread.

Funny stuff...
As I recall, I was one of the "college kids letting off steam" my senior year of college :) I believe I even had taken on JC as my alter-ego. I actually remember sitting in my college computer lab laughing about the whole episode.
Fun times, fun times. Thanks for the laugh Pinky! :)

I LOVED me some puppetsmack that's for sure! I was a pretty darn good puppetmacker. ;)
And FYI...I still read this board on a daily basis, I just don't have much to contribute.

Wow Lisa - long time no speak? Or should it be "write"?
I think there are a number of people who still lurk but don't have as much to contribute anymore (myself being one of them)

Hi, Girls! Glad to hear things are going well for you both. :)
Lisa, the baby is two already!? Time flies.
I haven't had much time to check the boards over the past two years, but now that I graduated, I seem to have more free time on my hands. Who would have thunk it? ;)

Angel, that's awesome. And YAH, I'd say it's definitely time for a baby in your house. With me I'm thinking maybe next year....trying to get this one out of diapers first. We have good days and bad days but you probably remember what that was like.
Hey yourself Lanie. I've kept tabs on you even though I wasn't posting. ;) Glad your first year of college went well!!
