Aaron Carter Takes Control!

Sounds of "One Better" filled the ballpark in Staten Island, probably even heard on the ferry making its way toward Manhattan. Girls in mini-skirts holding cameras peeked through the gates as their pop idol performed soundcheck and properly cheered at the end of each song. There's something different about Aaron Carter than we're used to though. Yes, his voice has matured, afterall he is sixteen now and not the "little prince of pop" his mother had marketed him as since he was nine-years-old. But there is much more to this boy who had no choice but to grow up as life aged him. Aaron Carter is known for three things in this world: Backstreet brother, controlling mother and feuding girlfriends. His music somehow got lost in the headlines, which hardly ever mention his accomplishments like being in the Guinness Book of World Records at the age of ten, starring on Broadway and being multi-talented in many instruments on top of his dancing acrobatics and appealing vocal ability.

Sure, tweens and teens scream, cry and request Aaron on Radio Disney where even there he's lost some rotation to ex-girlfriend, Hilary Duff and former tourmate, Jesse McCartney. But why has Aaron Carter yet to receive full recognition as an artist in the mainstream world? Songs like "That's How I Beat Shaq" and "I Want Candy" were great for Disney, but honestly not really for an MTV audience. In an interview after soundcheck and of course after some goofing off--hey, he may have had to grow up, but he's still a kid at heart--StarShine asked Aaron if he felt his targeted audience was holding his music back from maturing. "That is in a way kind of what's going on, but then at the same time, it's not because I try to keep my music acceptable for all ears." Aaron explains. "But there's going to have to be a time fortunately--and unfortunately for the younger fans--where I do get a little more mature, but there's never going to be a parental advisory sticker on my CDs." It seems like a double-edged sword. His fans are what made him, but at the same time, parents of those same fans want him to stay a twelve-year-old boy forever and that's not fair either.

Hopefully, Aaron's next album will take him a step further in the right direction. Though no release date or title have been confirmed, Aaron has already begun singing his new single "Saturday Night" in concert. Aaron revealed he wrote the song by himself, which is still something relatively new to the singer who's worked with a list of fairly unknown writers on his previous albums. StarShine was happy to hear Aaron had a hand in writing each song on his upcoming CD, which he predicts will be dropped in September. "Saturday Night" has a great dance beat and has the teenage party vibe Aaron is famous for, but of course, as promised, it is a bit more mature. Since we were on the topic of the new single, I wondered if Aaron was nervous performing it live before fans heard it on the radio. "No, because I've [performed new music live] before and it takes a lot to get me really nervous." He says honestly. "I've been performing my whole life. It takes a BIG audience to get me nervous, like a million people. Which has only happened like a couple of times." Aaron laughs. A million people? Yeah, I think any artist would be pretty nervous about that.

Moving away from music toward personal problems isn't something StarShine likes to do normally, but Aaron was more than okay with discussing his mother and we felt she's an obstacle he's overcome in his career. Aaron made it crystal clear his mother, Jane has no say in his career anymore. "It's mostly myself who has the say and I'm happy with that too. I'm happy with the crew that's working with me because it's all people I hand picked myself personally and I have to say I'm happy with what's going on." Aaron expressed. He only said he was happy three times, I think it's safe to say he is. He keeps a positive attitude and shows true strength and maturity, especially when it comes to his mother who treated him more like a commodity than a son. "She'll always be my mother and I'll always love her and I will always like her..." Aaron says after explaining she still has trouble separating business and family even now. "I'm not the kind of person who dislikes anybody because I don't. I don't dislike them, but being unhappy with somebody is something different." He says. "I'm a forgiving person."

Suing and arresting his mother for battery of his father's then fiancee, now wife--though all charges were dropped--had to be one of the most difficult things Aaron has been through and may ever go through, hopefully. How does one keep their sanity through it all? "I would have to say just being myself and try to block off everything else that was going on. And I managed to do that." Aaron says somewhat amazed. "I also at the same time, I kind of raised myself too and I became my own person." He says, wanting to make sure everyone knows his decisions are his own and no one else's for a change. "I don't act and do things like my father and I don't act and do things like my mother or my brother or my sister." Aaron also says he's grateful to his parents for bringing him into this world, but now he's free. "Now I'm a bird." He says pointing out into the clear blue sky as we sat in the seats at the Richmond County Ballpark. "I'm going to fly away as far as I can and explore as many things as possible. That's my point in life and I recommend everyone else do the same." He advises with a serious tone, but a warm smile. Maybe this analogy is why Aaron has a strange reoccurring dream. "I'm up on a house and I jump off of this roof and I'm just hanging on a rope back and forth..." Aaron says motioning like a swing with his hand.

Rumors have been circulating that the Carter family are following in the latest trend of TV celebrities like the Newlyweds and the Osbournes. StarShine of course had to clarify that and Aaron confirmed there will be a reality series starring the family and says the reasoning behind it is because it's "interesting", but agreed when I suggested it as therapy and to keep everyone sane. "You know, I kind of didn't want the world seeing how my family acted because my family's pretty messed up." Aaron confides in all seriousness. The pain is evident in his eyes, but he stays positive. "Everybody's messed up no matter who you are. I'm getting better and I'm building a new family and it's getting stronger. My mom will always be a part of my family too. There's nothing wrong with having families all over the place. Then you have people to be there for you." He says, a smile on his face once again.

Aaron was definitely feeling as if family were around him that day in Staten Island. Not only were his father, Bob and new wife, Ginger present, but his dancers, both new and old, were there to just hang out and have gymnastic competitions on the ballpark's lawn. On top of that "immediate" family, some old friends were performing along with Aaron that night. Reoccurring tourmates, Casey, formerly of Code 5 and popular girl group and "Every Little Step" singing partners, Play were on hand to chill with Aaron for the day. The interaction between Play and Aaron is fun and a little flirtatious. Aaron even made a change to his set list once he heard Play singing their rendition of "Every Little Step" during soundcheck. They were both performing at the same concert, why not sing the song together as it appears on Play's new album, Don't Stop The Music?

Since StarShine was discussing personal topics, we of course knew we'd be screamed at if we didn't ask Aaron if he had a girlfriend. "Her name's Brooke Hogan." Aaron says with a nod. Hogan? Hmm, any relation to Hulk? Actually, yes. Brooke is not only an upcoming singer, but is the daughter of the most famous wrestler of all-time, Hulk Hogan. Both she and her father arrived later in the day to support Aaron, not only offstage, but onstage as well. They introduced Aaron to the crowd as Brooke discussed Aaron's looks and body, but Hulk rolled his eyes and discussed his talent instead.

Before the show, Aaron posed for pictures for StarShine as well as for some star-struck stadium workers as the gates opened and ticket buyers flooded the ballpark. He quickly ran toward the dressing room seconds before he could be bombarded by his adoring fans, but soon met up with some of them for a meet & greet. Later on, Aaron had some time to hang out with his girlfriend and Play as well as grab a hot dog. StarShine has been familiar with Aaron for a few years now whether we were watching him onstage, backstage or in a press room, but we learned a lot about him that day in particularly. He has a sweet spot for kids as he proved pulling a little girl onstage and dancing with her. He doesn't sit still very often, that's something that will never change about Aaron though. He has learned a lot in the past year or so, but he understands how to balance his career and his youth. He makes sure he has time to mess around with his friends and crew and when he hits the stage, he makes sure it's all about his fans. As always, Aaron's stage presence is fun and extremely interactive with the audience, who all bum-rushed the stage despite the fact they were being scolded by security.

What's really surprising as well as concerning about Aaron Carter though is how underestimated he is as a performer. There weren't any hi-tech pyro or elaborate wardrobe changes like his Jukebox tour, but Aaron knows how to entertain and that's what he does best. Without the confines of his mother and keeping in his mind to move forward, we have a feeling he will creep up on the older audiences one step at a time as well as renew the support of his already loving fans. Aaron Carter will not only fly, but he will soar and you can quote us on that.

Hey frackgrl! I thought that was a damn good write up! Honestly, I went straight to the pics first and had no intention of reading the article since I went to that concert. However, I started reading it and I couldnt stop! I was not expecting such a well written article! You definitely have talent. I wish I could write like that! I am in English AP, philosophy and yearbook and I suck lol! I agreed with much of the stuff and it gives a lot of hope that Aaron will receive more credit like he deserves! awesome dude! xoxo
