Happy release day everyone!

Okay, maybe I'm a little excitable right now... Deal with it!

*Jaw drops*

Yes!!!!!! Yes, he is a genius! He is a God!

There are some slow parts to the album, I'll give you that, but overall it is fantastic!!

The middle movement is by far my favorite. I guess I should have seen that coming, as three of my favorite pieces/songs are here ("Wonderful," "Child is Father of the Man" and "Surf's Up"). It is incredible though; Parts I never knew, nor have I ever seen mentioned as pieces connected to one another come together naturally, making me feel almost foolish that I never saw some of the connections!

Parts are refined, in my contradicting opinion to the RS review. Some parts are definitely not. Some things, like "Heroes and Villians" sound so much more full. For the most part, whimsical comes to mind, as well as happiness. At a few points it is a well-orchestrated tempest, in contrast.

"Good Vibrations" closes the album, and it is a great combination of the released version and some of the alternate versions some of us disciples know. For instance the chant is in it and the lyrics are a cross between well-known and semi-known versions.

Wow.

By the way, I agree with the reviews. Just making sure that came through. ;)

Off to listen again!

I'll be getting paid tomorrow and buying it. Glad it was what you were hoping for.

It also comes with huge liner notes. I can't wait to read them. It looks like it's the story of SMiLE and the complete lyrics.

lol, you're like a little kid on Christmas morning. How cute ;)

Is Smile better than Brainwashed? Wait...don't answer that. I won't like the answer, I'm sure.

No, you won't like my answer. :p

Bit don't forget, SMiLE is something many have heard in bits and pieces for about 40 years. To hear it finished is like a miracle.

So...basically what you're saying is that the fact that people have had to wait so long that it's like food when someone has only had crumbs for years.

So, this long wait and anticipation could conceivabley taint their opinion of it, making them think it's better than it really is simply because they were starved for it.

I understand completely.

Basically, yes. haha

I was at Target last night with my parents and thought they might buy it for me and I could pay them back the next day. Target DIDN'T HAVE IT. It was nowhere to be found.

So did you not get it yet? And is it that they didn't order it or that they ran out?

princessKT
Sep 30th, 2004, 12:21 PM
Didn't order it. They always have tags in their bins for CDs, and neither in the new releases, popular releases, or under Brian Wilson. Pretty sad if you ask me.

bekahbeans

why don't you just go to Best Buy? I'm sure they'll have it.

princessKT

Well, yeah, I'm sure they will. I just happened to be at Target right then and hadn't gotten paid, so if I would have found it I would have asked for a loan.

Well, I'm finishing up the new BTS today... Hopefully you'll be able to hear "Good Vibrations" on the show by the end of the day.

Ha! I heard Smile.

I have to admit, it's pretty damn awesome.

Heard it? Is dad going to be playing it for a month?

bekahbeans
Oct 2nd, 2004, 07:39 AM
Yes, a month at the least. He also had to run out and buy it the moment it came out.

He felt I needed to sit and give it my full attention and then play certain parts for me to show the genius that is Brian.

I thought it was really good though; very much ahead of his time. Though...I'd still rather listen to the Beatles. ;)

What are your dad's favorite parts?

bekahbeans
Oct 2nd, 2004, 08:23 AM
He says his favorite is the second movement, "Wonderful, Song for Children" etc. He likes the other ones he's heard before like Surf's up, Good Vibrations etc too but he thinks he likes the originals of those better.

What are your favorite parts?

Edit: nm, you already said what your favorite was in your second post. Looks like you guys pretty much liked the same part.

I always thought the chanting belonged in Vibrations, so I'm glad they are back. But I do like the lyrics they decided to use for the original release better.

I've heard the extended Heroes before, and like both versions. I think I like the SMiLE version better as it has more of the "Wall of Sound" feel to it, and I like that they have the whole intro now.

I think he'll get used to the new versions. He said he hasn't really listened to it closely enough yet. I like this version of Good Vibrations better.

I actually listened to it on my way home today and I think I like the first movement the best, closely followed by the second. Though my favorite song is Vega-Tables, hands down.

I'm thinking the last movement is my favorite, but I like them all. The second's nice, ending with Surf's Up. (always one of my favorites) But I also like the first movement with the beautiful a capella heading into Heroes and Villians. So hard to pick.

I said this to Dave yesterday, but I think the whole thing is so weird to me because Brian Wilson's voice sounds so old in certain parts. It's also so weird that it's not the Beach Boys singing the parts, but it is still remarkably good. Brian was definitely on some drugs for this creation, huh? lol

I've only listened to it a couple of times, I need to listen to it more.

bekahbeans
Oct 3rd, 2004, 10:42 PM
haha, he sounds old? I didn't notice but talking about the album makes me want to listen to it again - I'll try to listen for his old voice :p.

Damn it all, if I get hooked on this I'm blaming you two.

Yes, Heros and Villains is why I think I like the first part so much. It's done sooo nicely.

Katie was complaining about Vege-tables yesterday too besides saying he sounded old. She said it was too "Takg Good Care of Your Feet" weird. Then I told her that in the first version, Paul McCartney was a guest "chewer."

bekahbeans
Oct 3rd, 2004, 11:33 PM
That's the only great part of that song. Paul's chewing is almost magical.

With the album doing so well so far, do you think Mike Love is:

1) Seeing the error of his ways in the 60s and kicking himself.

2) Hoping to tour with Brian now that he's back on top.

3) Contemplating what kind of lawsuit he could level against Brian to make some cash off this all.

princessKT

I still skip Vegetables.

bekahbeans
Oct 4th, 2004, 10:14 AM
Aw, Katie. I know you'll feel better if you'd just send us in your letter an' tell us the name of your favorite vege-table.

princessKT
Oct 4th, 2004, 01:09 PM
Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of a lot of vegetables, and that's why I don't like the song.

Spinach is probably favorite.

bekahbeans
Oct 4th, 2004, 01:40 PM
Spinach...or baby spinach? This is an important distinction.

princessKT
Oct 4th, 2004, 02:09 PM
Spinach. I don't think I've ever had baby spinach.
