Go see "Finding Neverland". There are very few films that you see where you say I would go back and see it again - I would definitely go back to the cinema again to see this. Cannot wait for the DVD.
Johnny Depp deserves the Oscar this year for his performance. As a Scot, I must say his accent was excellent.
Great film, great acting (especially the kids) and brilliant performance from Johnny Depp.
Take some tissues with you, though, as it does pull at the heart strings.

Saw "The Incredibles" this weekend with my daughter. It was awful! My daughter wanted to see The Polar Express but I kept wondering how they could take a 20 page book (which I have read to her about 20 times) and turn it into a 2 hour movie?
I did hear from several people that Neverland was very good.

My daughter (5 yrs.) and I just got back from the Polar Express, 3D IMAX version. Pretty damn cool, lemme tell ya...We too have read the book a billion times and the movie was perfectly expanded to fix an hour & 30 min. movie. The 3D was incredible, simply incredible. The graphics were freaky real, kinda claymation on acid. And, of course, the story is timeless...Well worth it, especially 3D (see Ebert review below which was spot on BTW)...

I too saw The Polar Express, 3-D Imax version this past weekend with my kids. It was fantastic. The animation/real life visuals were superb. Well worth seeing.
My kids have seen The Incredibles, and basically they said it s u c k e d. My oldest kid, a son, went to see SAW, and he loved it. He said it wasn't all that gory, but pretty intense.
My 12 y/o daughter saw The Grudge, and gave it a thumbs down. She said it wasn't all that scary and was 'pretty lame.'
I don't think any of them will grow up to be movie critics.

This film aired at the London Film Festival in October and won so much critical acclaim. However, it has yet to be given general release in UK. All reviews praise Imelda Staunton in the lead role.
I'm sure it will make it to the BAFTA awards but do you think the Oscars will take a chance on it?

Paulie, let us know how National Treasure is.From the trailers I have seen I am just not impressed. It looks really ill-conceived but I have been wrong before about movies. I'm not a real big Nick Cage fan, although one of my favorite movies is "Faceoff".
Neverland sounds just awesome. I heard Jonny Depp comment that the kid that was in Neverland with him is going to also play "Charlie" in the remake of Willy Wonka.

Sideways. Just went into wider release out here in LA. By the same guy that did Election (with Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick--a great movie). Sideways is about 2 middle aged men who go to wine country together as sort of a Bachelor party for one of the guys. Very well acted, and very good.
My husband liked The Incredibles better than my kids.
Grudge was lame.
Seeing Friday Night Lights tonight--supposed to be good.

Has anyone seen the new Bridget Jones yet? Know that it isn't supposed to be great, but neither was the first one and I still loved it. Edge of Reason is such a funny book. They did a limited release a week early last weekend, but Burlington, Vermont wasn't on the priority list......

Hey! See the new thread I just posted: Ian Anderson seems to think Burlington's a cool place to play!!!! :redcool:
I dread what they might do to Goblet of Fire, since they chopped up Azkaban so much. I don't understand why they can't follow the book: we like the book for its story, why change it? That's why Holes was such a well done movie, it followed the book so closely.
Of course, no one in thier right mind could keep Goblet and Phoenix in one piece, unless they make them into mini-series or something!

That's too funny about Ian Anderson. Bethie grew up with two brothers who were/are HUGE Tull fans, and she developed a liking of their music. On the other hand, if I never hear "Aqualung" again, I'll be a very happy person!! But to each their own...have a good time!!
There had been talk of making Goblet into two movies, but they decided against it. They'll basically have to focus almost entirely on the Triwizard Tournament and the return of Voldemort. As for Phoenix, I have no idea what they'd be able to cut. That's really gonna be a challenge.

Well, I saw Bridget Jones today. I don't know, Mo. It was not so great. I didn't find any charm in it, and they completely changed it, with a few exceptions. I don't understand why they can't figure out that the reason why people like to see their books made into movies is because they LOVE THE BOOK! I can understand having a different vision of the story, and cutting out certain sub-stories for time's sake, but why do they have to completely mutilate the basic story line, and the personalities and roles of the characters?
By leaving out the heart of the book, all the little funny scenes that made thier relationship special, the final result was a one-dimensional, much more boring repeat of the first movie.

You are quite right that they took poetic licence with the title - it does not resemble the book, but it was the same with the first film. I agree, they did not capitalise on the Bridget/Darcy relationship as much as they could have but there were still some funny sequences in it.
Quite agree with the book to film problem. If you read the book first, the film is usually a disappointment and vice-versa. As the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time.
Sorry it was a disappointment for you.

We are so far behind, we'll never get to see half of the movies we'd like. It got a lot harder once we had kids. Our oldest is now 6, so that means we're about 6 years behind.
I was sick last week, so I stayed home and FINALLY saw: Spider Man, Big Fish, and half of Gosford Park (until I fell asleep).
On the other hand, we are really up to date on: Barbie - Princess & the Pauper  the Care Bears movie  and Shrek 2. Next up: Clifford's Really Big Movie.

I really enjoyed the IMAX version of Polar Express but think it would lose a lot of impact on "ordinary" screen. The train itself was excellent.
Watched the special editions of The Lord of The Rings trilogy over the past 3 days, culminating with the Return of the King on Christmas night. AMAZING! Shame the Christopher Lee bit was cut from the original film. Don't understand why Peter Jackson killed him off in the new version - not true to the book, but then again the same can be said for other bits of the films.
Also watched Elf - what a surprisingly good film.

We watched The Terminal last night. I liked it, Douger didn't. It wasn't a great movie, but it was good. I didn't think they needed the Catherine Zeta Jones character either, but I figure they have to keep the males in the audience happy with someone to look at because it was more of a chick flick.

Think that's because for the first hour there is not much for the kids to laugh at or take interest in. The kids around us were getting bored and wanting more popcorn, etc. They did not start to get excited until the last half hour, when all the action really started.

Nuclear, Which did you like better?
Hero,
The Last Samurai
or
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
I know all three are somewhat different and all of them offer uniqueness.
I can't see how "Hero" did not win an Oscar for Art Direction or Cinematography or even Visual Effects. At best it should have won best foreign film of 2002.
nuclear
Dec 31st, 2004, 07:37 AM
Have to say that Hero wins for cinematography and all round best picture. Crouching Tiger was amazing, in my opinion because it was really the first "big" picture to come out of this genre of historic Chinese epics and open our eyes.
Crouching Tiger, I think wins for story line but it lost a bit in translation - the subtitled version was better than the English version.
Last Samurai comes third, mainly because it was too "Hollywood" and manufactured. Love Tom Cruise, but Samurai was not in the same league as the Chinese films. Samurai was a Tom Cruise movie, not an historic movie. Also, they cast Billy Connolly in it and I cannot fathom that accent he tried to use - he should stick to what he does adequately - stand-up comedy, in my Glaswegian opinion.
Perhaps it is because we do not know the Chinese actors as well as the hollywood stars, therefore no one person stands out from the main cast to focus attention away from the plot.

Just saw Polar Express on a regular screen, and I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. I went in skeptical because I felt like it would be like Christmas lights in March, seeing it after Christmas, but the Incredibles was sold out, so we had little other choice. Can imagine that the IMAX version is pretty intense!

Yesterday, I saw the Aviator and I think it was done very well. I think all the actors did excellent jobs. Before going I had some apprehension with believing Leonardo DiCaprio could pull off the role of playing Howard Hughes. But he did indeed do a very good job and his portrayal of Hughes problems with OCD (unknown at the time) and hypochondria was excellent. Almost so good to a point of disturbing. I'm not a huge fan of Leonardo but I did like him alot in the movie "Catch me if you can".
Cate Blanchett portrayed Katharine Hepburn and IMO she deserves an oscar nomination for her job. She was very good and nearly stole the movie.
Alan Alda also was very good in his role as Sen. Brewster.
Kate Beckinsale portrayed Ava Gardner and did a very good job too. But her portrayal came across as Ava being a real bitch and mean spirited.
Alec Baldwin was ok in the role of Pan American's bully tycoon Juan Trippe. I have never really been any sort of fan of this Baldwin boy.
Martin Scorsese should receive a Oscar (his first I think) for his directing. It was phenomenal.
The movie is very long at nearly 3 hours but the film is so captivating I hardly realized it was so long.
The movie chronicles Hughes life up to around 1950. Before his Vegas days and more. However a sequel could be in the works to show the remainder of his life.
I'm glad I went to see the movie. The visuals in it are very good and anyone that enjoys Aviation should like this movie too.

So I took the girls, 12 and 8 to see "Finding Neverland" last week. Liked it alot, the 8-year-old liked it too, but it wasn't "exciting" enough for the 12-year-old. Too much Harry Potter for her......
Took them all plus three other kids to "Incredibles" on Sunday. We all enjoyed it, but it certainly didn't make you feel all warm and cozy the way the Shrek films and Toy Story did. I go by whether I wake up the next morning and remember it immediately. I didn't.
We did rent "Around the World in 80 Days" last week, and we all thought it was a hoot. Only problem is now keeping five-year-old from attempting wild martial arts on his sister and friends.
Watched "13 Going on 30" the other night and it had its pluses and many minuses. Liked Mark Ruffalo better than I usually do. Didn't not like the movie. It was just uneven. My twelve-year-old had seen it, and didn't want to again, so that was key warning, although I realized while watching that it really is not a teen film like "What a Girl Wants" or "Chasing Liberty". It's much more aimed at adults.
Doing a lot of movies lately. Have to do a lot of hibernating in weather that doesn't go above 0.

Thought The Village was quite good but realised very early on what was happening. Interesting film. Excellent "extras" with the DVD.
BAFTAs were last night - Imelda Staunton won Best Actress for Vera Drake.
Sad that Findl=ing Nvereland won nothing, I'm sure it will turn into a DVD classic.
Well done Jamie Foxx for Best Actor for Ray, although I did not find the film that good, his acting was nonetheless superb for the character he was playing.
Anyone any thoughts for the Oscars?

It's been a slow summer for me to catch movies but some of my favorites this summer are:
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Batman Begins
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Cinderella Man
Crash
Sin City
Crash has to be one of the best and most powerful movies I have seen in a long long time. Just left me speechless when I left the theater.

Johnny Depp creeped me out, the way he played Willy Wonka, and they left out the most important scene. Loved Deep Roy as the Umpa-loompas.
Christian Bale annoyed me the way he talked when he was decked out as Batman.
Revenge of the Sith did not impresse me, and there was one scene that mortified me, as a parent.
Madagascar was cute but nothing special.
And that, I think, is the extent of my movie going this summer. Pathetic, huh?
However, rented Dear, Frankie the other night and LOVED it. Gerard Butler and a good old quiet story about real life.
Has anybody seen The Island? Love futuristic stories, is this one worth it?
Deb
Oh, yeah, I think it was a summer movie: loved Robots.

I took the kids to see Willy Wonka on opening night...two things struck me: 1. They could have saved a lot of money in make-up artists fees, etc. if they had only recruited Michael Jackson to play the part of Willy (but I guess he was a little tied up), and 2. The entire theatre erupted in applause when the movie ended. It's been a long time since I've seen a movie where that happened.

Went to see The Aristocrats, as a former high school classmate of mine is the producer/director.
It is a documentary about a joke, mostly told by comedians to comedians. It is vulgar, crude and incredibly funny. Do not go with your kids or your parents.

Took the kids to see Sky High today. It was much better than I expected. A refreshing way to tell a high school angst story. All the same old stereotypes, but done in a fun way. Everyone enjoyed it, from the five-year-old up.
This is the first movie in a long time that I decided to buy on DVD before it was even over!

BTW, the previews for Chicken Little are adorably hysterical, and the Chronicles of Narnia looks stunning. And it looks like they might actually get Harry Potter right this time around.....

We finally rented Million Dollar Baby and Sideways the other night. MDB was really great and I really thought that I wouldn't enjoy it because I do not like boxing. Wonderful acting, cast and script.
Sideways on the other hand was quite over-blown in my opinion. It had a few really funny parts but mostly I felt that it was a pompous look at men and their mid-life crisis'. I thought the characters were undeveloped (sometimes I feel that way about men too...) and the acting was slow. I guess I was really disappointed because it got such great reviews. Oh well...

P.S. I can't wait for the Narnia movie too.

I agree with you on both movies. I truly disliked Sideways and could not understand what the hubbub was all about. I loved Million Dollar Baby. Liked it enough so that I bought the DVD but it's a basic bare bones DVD not too many extras.
