The city's tourism department says a 20-percent increase in tourism from Japan pushed the number of visitors to the Big Apple to nearly 40 million people.
The tourism bureau says 350-thousand people from Japan visited the city - many who came to see New York Yankees outfield Hideki Matsui.
The United Kingdom sent the most international visitors with 970-thousand people coming from the other side of the pond.
Canada was second with 750-thousand visitors coming south of the border.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the number of international visitors is on the rise for the first time since September Eleventh, 2001.
The mayor says 5.4 million foreign visitors came to New York City in 2004.
