Finally an easy question!

What are you listening to this week?

----My kids whining
---people at work complaining
---and some kind of ping, ping, ping from my car:)

Seriously, sadly I've gotten out of my music listening habits, but am aiming to get back into it.
Lately, in between the above:

Loretta Lynn: Van Lear Rose (I can't get the duet Portland, Oregon with Jack White out of my head-----earworm!)

Los Lonely Boys (my 2 boys put Heaven on full blast and dance around)

Bob Dylan: Time Out of Mind

Picturebook by the Kinks because I had to look it up online to see who sang that catchy thing on the HP commercial.------which reminds me---(sing in a low voice)--Draggin the line, doesn't Mitsubishi have attention getting music in their commercials?

What about Pittsburgh Flood Aid, Dukie? Not yet. YET?.

I listened to 30 seconds of "This Hard Land" and thought; how many friggin times have I heard this song and then proceeded to remove the disc from the player. Pretty nice Audience recording though....

I've got some SRV studio outakes and a 1981 Stones SBD from Seattle waiting to be burned for tomorrow. Flood Aid? I need some fresh Bruce material to get me to have any interest in him at this point.

The 6 discs in my changer at the moment...

1) Ari Hest - Someone to Tell: Just picked this one up. Folks had been talking about him after his performance a few weeks back, so after checking out his website, I bought the CD.

2@&3) Jesse Malin - The Fine Art... and The Heat: The Heat hasn't really grown on me yet - I like the first disc a lot better...

4) Jason Mraz - Waiting for My Rocket

5) Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane: I got into this album over the summer but stopped listening to it in the fall. I think some of the non-hit/radio songs are actually better than the ones that got overplayed.

6) actually, it's empty at the moment - waiting for the new U2, which I haven't picked up yet...

This Hard Land is the first unreleased Bruce song I ever heard, it was a 12 inch vinyl with demos for Glory Days, My love will Not Let you Down, Frankie...you know that one? It will always have a special place and I don't think it will ever get old for you

I just got outtakes of Bonham's tracks (drums only) from the studio sessions for In Through the Out Door. His bass drum is so huge.

The second single from the new Green Day album is a bigtime ripoff of On With the Shpw by Motley Crue, which I bet those "punkers" would find horrifying. It also rips offa Summer of 69.

Waitasecond, you didn't listen to Factory?

Maybe it's that you listened to the "same old" Bruce songs to death and okay on This Hard Land, but Factory, whoa, been a long time and yes I stood through the whole slow song and was wowed right back to 1978.
Try it again...it's a great recording, with opera house echo.

Yeah, a bit confusing.....
"Rearviewmirror" is the title of Pearl Jam's 2-CD Greatest Hits 1991--2003. (It's quite good, btw.) "Rearviewmirror" is also a song on that greatest hits collection.

The tracklisting on Pearl Jam's greatest hits "Rearviewmirror" was organized cleverly, with the first disc "The Upside" featuring all of their rockers and the second disc "The Downside" featuring their slow, brooding tunes.

It's been Al Green for a week - especially one song, "Belle." Has anyone else heard it? It's not the song, as much, I think, as the singing - the singing comes from somewhere really far inside, really true. I've been dreaming that song - enough that I'm getting ready to cut myself off from listening to it, for a while.

Well,the same thing:

My children whining
people at work complaining
and some kind of ping, ping, ping from my car:)

---and "Bless your beautiful hide, wherever you may be....." sung in a loud booming voice over and over because 7 Brides for 7 Brothers was on recently and then we rented it and some of the family members seem obsessed with it.

but I did squeeze in a little of the new U2 and the radio. I want to dig out my Steve Winwood Arc of a Diver after being reminded of it when I read about the Capaldi/Traffic/Winwood connection. I was so amazed at that album because I think he did the whole shebang----wrote, sang and performed all the instrumental parts.

Some of you all have a lot of time to listen to music. Lucky you-----maybe not, if it is those long commutes.

Enigma - Greatest

My favorite Tracy Chapman cut on this album is : Remember The Tinman. It's great.

There are locks on the doors
And chains stretched across all the entries to the inside
There's a gate and a fence
And bars to protect from only God knows what lurks outside
Who stole your heart left you with a space
That no one and nothing can fill
Who stole your heart who took it away
Knowing that without it you can't live
Who took away the part so essential to the whole
Left you a hollow body
Skin and bone
What robber what thief who stole your heart and the key

Who stole your heart
The smile from your face
The innocence the light from your eyes
Who stole your heart or did you give it away
And if so then when and why
Who took away the part so essential to the whole
Left you a hollow body
Skin and bone
What robber what thief
Who stole your heart and the key

Now all sentiment is gone
Now you have no trust in no one

Who stole your heart
Did you know but forget the method and moment in time
Was it a trickster using mirrors and sleight of hand
A strong elixir or a potion that you drank
Who hurt your heart
Bruised it in a place
That no one and nothing can heal

You've gone to wizards, princes and magic men
You've gone to witches, the good the bad the indifferent
But still all sentiment is gone
But still you have no trust in no one

If you can tear down the walls
Throw your armor away remove all roadblocks barricades
If you can forget there are bandits and dragons to slay
And don't forget that you defend an empty space
And remember the tinman
Found he had what he thought he lacked
Remember the tinman
Go find your hear and take it back

Who stole your heart
Maybe no one can say
One day you will find it I pray

I haven't stopped listening to him for two weeks. He has been compared to our friend. He has a sorta folk sound. Whoever hasn't heard him, find the songs "the great american novel" or "thunder and rainbows" or "Let's talk about it in the morning" or "have an angle walk with her". Also, check out his web site martynjoseph.com where you can hear and even download some videos.

Where has this guy been my whole life. Anyone else know or like his music?

sort of a countryish Sheryl Crow, but much better
just saw her at Bowery Ballroom last night, she rocks!

I agree. One of the best shows I saw in 2004 was Sonia Dada at Rams Head in Baltimore. I stood right in front of the stage, was able to come and go to get beers or use the bathroom and go right back to the same spot....but the band played with the same effort you would expect if they were playing to full house at CAA...

* Rolling Stones boot from Los Angeles, 1975 (man, was Keith f'd up back in the day - "Happy" is just a train-wreck at this show)
* Joy Zipper - American Whip (really liking it - worth a listen if you like Brian Wilson-style atmospheric pop)
* Jennifer O'Connor - The Color and the Light (liking it - wide-ranging singer-songwriter from the indie label side of the tracks)
* Maria McKee - Peddlin' Dreams - (not thrilled at first spin - this one will need a good headphone listen to pick apart what works for me and doesn't)

I've been carrying the new Bruce around for a couple of days and haven't gotten around to more than a quick flip through the songs. I'm holding off for the weekend to put on my best headphones and give it a serious couple of spins.

Richard...Maria McKee is a big mystery to me...i thought Lone Justice was going to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time--what potential. And even solo, i thought she'd be so huge. Back in 83-84, i would have bet the house that she would be next great female rocker.

The Wailers- Live at Leeds 1973
Possibly the best musicianship of any band I've ever heard live. Certainly the best harmonies. Stunning in its brilliance.

The White Stripes- Blue Orchid (single-available at iTunes)
Great riff. Super energy. Jack doing his best Robert Plant. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Little Feat- Live at WLIR 1973
For me the warmer weather means it's time to put on some Feat. This band was as tight as any and Lowell George can't be beat as a vocalist and slide player. I said, he can't be beat. The definitive recording of their career and one of the best sounding sets of music I've ever heard.

Bruce Springsteen- Reason to Believe from the Paramount Theater
Shows that the genius can still be released every once in a while. Stunning Delta blues howling that is the spookiest thing Bruce has ever done live topping even State Trooper.

Rave On,

One day last week when I got home from work and I tuned into The Ellen Show. On the show was Christina Aguilera performing an old Leon Russell song with Herbie Hancock. She sang " A Song For You"...Man it was great! Then Ellen announced Herbie Hancock has a new album out with numerous guests called "Possibilities". I thought I would take a chance and buy it. Especially when I read that Damien Rice (I buy anything I can get my hands on of his music) and Lisa Hannigan do an old Billie Holiday take of "Don't Explain" on it.
I have to say this is one of the best albums I have heard this year, Really Really good stuff. If you like mellow, soothing bluesy, and jazzy then you should like this.If you get a chance to pick it up it will be well worth the cost.It was originally recorded for a Starbucks compilation but I think the interest in it has caused it to be marketed at most places where music is sold.Of the 10 cuts on this album the only one I didn't really care for was Sting's "Sister Moon" and Paul Simon I have never really been a fan of his so I can take it or leave it on his "I Do It For Your Love". Raul Midon's take on the old Stevie Wonder song "I just called to say I love you" is great and in fact I read on the notes that Stevie does a harmonica solo on it.
Some of my favorite cuts are (not in order) :

Stitched Up-John Mayer
Safiatou- Santana and Angelou Kidjo
A Song For You- Christina Aguilera
Hush, Hush, Hush- Annie Lenox
Don't explain-Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan
I Just Called To Say I Love You - Raul Midon
Gelo Na Montanha- Trey Anastasio

My current contender for best album of the year:

"I Believe to My Soul"

Mommy-O picked this one up at Starbucks, of all places. I just rolled my eyes, until I saw the lineup of artists, read about the cause, and of course, heard the music.

Joe Henry (who produced Solomon Burke's 'Dont Give Up on Me') brings together five of the greatest living artists of soul: Ann Peebles, Billy Preston, Mavis Staples, Irma Thomas, and Mr. Allen Toussaint.

OK...you definitely have my attention

Starbucks and Rhino are donating $10 of the purchase price of every CD sold at Starbucks to aid in the Gulf Coast's recovery following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Donations will be made to the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross.

Excellent cause. That alone is reason enough to buy this.

From the back of the CD cover:
"This is a new soul record done in a classic mode, not a re-creation of classic soul music. It is a record authentic to where these five great artists find themselves today--and in relationship to each other. It is music steeped in tradition, but played with no particular reverence for it."

And the music:
1.You Must Have That True Religion--Mavis Staples
2.Both Ways--Billy Preston
3.Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You--Ann Peebles
4.The Same Love That Made Me Laugh--Irma Thomas
5.Mi Amour--Allen Toussaint
6.Keep on Pushing--Mavis Staples
7.As One--Billy Preston
8.Loving Arms--Irma Thomas
9.River Boat--Allen Toussaint
10.That's Enough--Mavis Staples and Billy Preston
11.Turvalon--Allen Toussaint
12.When the Candle Burns Low--Ann Peebles
13.We Are One--Allen Toussaint

Ok, you take three of the top five female soul vocalists of all time, add the incomparable Billy Preston and MR ALLEN TOUSSAINT, and let a producer who knows what the h*ll he's doing, and you have an album that is so good your head will be spinning. We adore Irma Thomas, and to hear her sounding so good, all along while realizing that she lost pretty much everything in the post-Katrina flooding...well, it's overwhelming. Her vocals on 'Loving Arms' are perfect. Ann Peebles brings that Memphis soul to the party, and Mavis Staples continues to be a national treasure. Pretty much everything Billy Preston touches turns to gold. And every time I hear Allen Toussaint play the piano, I smile and literally feel my spirits lift. :music:

Daddy-O says check it out!

I think I will listen soon again to Marah's "If you did not laugh you'd cry".

Wow - kind of disappointed. May check 'em out on Friday night in Hoboken ($10? Can't beat that for true rock and roll!) but this was really poorly recorded - they were going for a live sound and lost most all the vocals on the raveups. There are three or four tunes that are stand outs - on a first listen. Man.

Stevie Wonder's new album is the opposite - heaven for the ears and a morning of excitement for the mind at the bus stop of pedestrian lyrics.

McCartneys' album is quite promising on first listen - perhaps it is as good as they say.

I could listen to this guy sing the telephone book. In fact, when I first saw the title of this record, I wondered if that was what he was doing...working backwards from the end of the alphabet.

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen - Sounds a lot like Modest Mouse, but the closing track is straight out of the Springsteen playbook. Even the song's title, This Heart's On Fire, is Springsteen-like. But the record's best song, I'll Believe in Anything, might be the Track of the Year for me. Loud and very intense. Great stuff.

Bruce Cockburns' new "Speechless" is an sonic celebration of a musical delight. My gf said "watching him Saturday night, I closed my eyes and believed there were 5 guitarists up there - there was so much music coming from him...."

So much beauty, so few moments.

I did get the Ray Lamontagne cd, some of the songs sound very similar----but what can you expect from solo acoustic?

---Also, only because I was a captive audience in the car, Patty Griffin: A Kiss in Time; and worse, Disney's Beach Party

Try the Griffin House disc - great, great stuff especially "Amsterdam".

Patty? From "Living with Ghosts" to "Flaming Red" to "1000 Kisses", she is a giant. A true giant with the voice of generations pouring out of her....

got some new music this week:
John Coltrane-A Love Supreme.
It's as good as it gets
James Blunt-Bedlam.
I'm slow to discover this guy. He's great with great lyrics. Reminds me a bit like Damien Rice.
Toni Braxton-Ultimate
Toni is going to have an ongoing show at the Flamingo in vegas starting in August 06. Can't wait to see her again.
Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones- New York City
Had this one for a long time. good mellow stuff.
