View Full Version : Your opinion on Janet Jackson and her influence on Britney? ...

To start off this post, I do realise that Britney's image now is more leaning towards Madge, but that's besides the fact...
When Britney first started out, her influence and the way she performed, the way she sang was much more influenced by Janet Jackson.
Do you think that's a good thing?
Around "Britney", Madonna started to become more of an influence music and stage-wise. And since then I noticed that Britney has had a slight decline in the way she performs and sings live. I'm not trashing Madonna, but I think Janet was a much greater image to go after then Madoona.
Why? Because Madonna is THE Madonna. While Janet is my favorite artist, Madonna posseses something that just can't be reproduced, and looks silly when others try to immitate it. Britney was clearly more delighted by Janet when she first started out. She talked about her more often, and recognized her more as an entertainer and an influence on her career.
Now she's trying to be Madonna, and it's simply not working for her. I mean it's nice that she's trying to do something a little more progressive as an artist.
But don't you think she's pushing it a little too hard to make her image bigger then her music? (Like Madonna)
Don't you think she's knocking down what she so firmly worked for? (LIke Madonna, but Madonna could re-build what she worked for as an even bigger empire, but Britney isn't managing that well..we'll see)
In conclusion: I think Madge was is a bad influence on Britney. Do I think Janet would be a better influence? Sure. But that's now what I'm getting at exactly. I think Britney needs to break off and finally be something that can't be reproduced...That my friend, would finally get her into the "Legandary league".
Thanks for your time. :)

Much greater image? Britney wouldn't sink that low and expose her boob. She wore Madonna's shirts not Janet's. While I do agree that she mentioned Janet as one of her influences but does she mention her now? Nope. She can't be reproduced. Look at all the other female wannabe britney's that came out. By the looks of it I can see why she wouldn't want to be compared to Janet. :p

What are you talking about when you refere to much greater image? And why bring up the boob incident? Are you old enough to realise that Janet had a career 20 years before that?
Wannabe Britney's and Christina's are cool because they were the 'it' thing. It was the 'it' thing to be a blonde girl who shows her belly button. That wasn't much of a 'wannabe Britney'', it was more of wanning to have an image that was hot at the moment.
Look at stars like Brooke Alison. She came out BEFORE Britney and Christina and Britney...about a year maybe? She started getting buz and flopped horribly. But appearently Britney and Christina's record labels thought she was good enough to mold their stars after her...the blonde innocent thing.

Anyways, this post wasn't about disrespecting Janet, or about Janet at all.
My main focus is that Britney would be so much further in her career if she spent a little more time trying to be an artist instead of the image in front of one. So would Christina (Since you're all going to bring her up, ANYWAY). It doesn't matter about writing 'deep' or 'inspiring' material. That's not what defines being an artist.
But her last few projects have been embarsingly sloppy.

All the record companies tried so hard to mold their up and coming artists like Britney but she was the original she has the "It" factor. Just look at how Mandy, and Jessica failed miserably when they tried to be like her, and when Christina back then was always mentioned as the second Britney. I'd be furious to be called the second Britney, or if I failed horribly but it seems these girls took out their anger out on Britney for what the media had started. On the Janet comment do you really think that the boob incident was not planned? Why did they choose that song to perform when at the end it says "better have you naked by the end of this song" Come on now. I feel bad for Janet because all nite (don't stop) was a good dance song but she was trying to hard to be like Britney and her video for Slave. Just watch both of them and then talk to me about who is getting their inspirations from.

I'm going to start off saying that Christina was called the 'second-britney' because of "Genie In A Bottle" Vs. "...Baby One More Time". Calling her second-britney turned into a press rivalry instead of a comparison, so I do recognize what you're saying, but we both know that Christina being called a 'second-britney' didn't last very long because of how different they are.
Do I think the boob incident was planned? Of COURSE I do. The only thing I find stupid about the boob incident is people, like you, try to bring it up to discredit Janet. It's a good cop-out to say "She isn't anything because she showed her boob". Also, this is where the Britney thing comes in. AMERICA totally were over-reacting about the boob incident, like people are over reacting about Britney's stupud moves. So you can relate to that, being a Britney fan, that people make a big deal out of nothing....you are doing just that. The need to bring up the boob incident in this discussion is proof that you're trying to snub giving Janet credit where credit is due.
"All Nite(Don't Stop)" was not directed by Janet Jackson, so she was not trying to be britney. I don't know why she'd want to copy a song that didn't do so hot anyway(Yeah I know it was clear channel's fault, but it's still not something iconic, or great that was done to be copied by Janet Jackson. Janet doesn't need to copy Britney. And if you think she does, you're on a major 'ego-trip' about how far along Britney is in her career exactly.

Britney never said she was inspired by her image. She was inspired by some of her songs, and her stage shows. Where as Britney was singing Like A prayer when she was 5.
So you're trying to say that Britney's image was inspired by Madonna from the jump? If you are, then I won't be discussing this with you any longer. I'll wait for someone with a more un-biased opinion comes along.
When Britney first came out, she did an interview(I can't remember which one, but I'll be sure to ask a Britney forum), she said she had always dreamed of being like Janet and doing the stuff that Janet would do. ALSO, on the "Dream Within A Dream" tour, she was giving an interview and was giving a tour of a tour bus...and right in view, you can see the "janet." CD sitting promtpy by her stereo. :)

I know "All Nite(Don't Stop)" flopped, as well as "Damita Jo". I'm not biased. But peaking at #27(FIRST SINGLE) isn't exactly anything to call home about. It didn't do so hot for a first single, not at all.

Oh and I did say that Britney liked Janet's songs. She was dancing to her songs and Michael's songs during various photo shoots. So I'm not discrediting Janet I just think that Madonna had a much bigger influence on Britney. Oh and Britney did go to Janet's Icon Bash. They looked cute together during their photos. I think Madonna and Janet were both very big impact on Britney's career. But I think she often tries to give Madonna a lot more aknowledgement to gain a little more respect. Madonna and Britney couldn't have been more different from eachother when Britney first came out....the only thing they really had in common was chart success. Image-wise, music-wise, Britney was nothing like Madonna.

Jessica sounds nothing like Britney on "Irrisistable". I don't even like Jessica, I think she's trash...but copying Britney? Nah. Jessica was trying to go for somthing different....A girl who can sing really well. She even had a hip-hop remix to "Irrisitable" to continue trying to immitate Mariah. Someone else did it better, though. ;)
If you looked at Jessica's career a little closer, you'll see that the people who was prepping Jessica at Columbia Records, they were the same people who helped Mariah get her career off the ground. They tried to give Jessica Mariah's "it" factor. Not Britney's.

Janet didn't have any industry connections when her career really started. Before "Control", her first few albums were tottal flops. She cut ties from her manager and her family, went out and got her own record deal and founded her own image. Janet didn't have any help.

actually i agree with you in someways but then again someways i disagree. I really didn't listen to madonna much until the ray of light album than i begin to listen to more music and enjoy her music more. I have always liked Janet she can dance and sing and her image is amazing its very well crafted. But however i was listening to some of madonna material from the 80's and her style is alot like britney when she first came out. Musically i think Britney got alot of her style from Madonna partically voice, rythm, beats all that. But Britney when performing on stage is more like Janet in terms of her dancing. Janet is a better dancer than madonna. Madonna is a better singer than Janet. I think the style Britney has recreated now speaking of the "My Prerogative Era" I think is a style that is completely her own. I think the stlye Britney has created now has alot of similar things with Janet and Madonna but is distinctly her own. I have noticed alot of girls trying to emmulate Britney stlye i.e Beyonce, Hilary, Lindsey, Gwen, Jessica, Ciara. So in conclusion to this to say Britney has alot of her style from madonna and Janet is true but we have to keep in mind. Britney was alot younger then madonna and Janet when she started the buisness and fair to say more succesful than both combined? I believe Janet has sold 70 million + albums Madonna somewhere in the 100+ but Madonna and Janet have done alot more albums than Britney. Britney has sold nearly 70 million albums just based on 4 commericial releases and 1 greatest hits. So to say Britney is copying Madonna and Janet is a true statment but also a huge understatement considering everthing Britney is. Britney is bigger than both artist combined when they were 23....she's the Queen of Pop. It is fair to give equal to janet and madonna being, Janet Pop Icon. Madonna Queen of reinivition. 50 years from now people will be saying how Britney is the Queen of pop and how she has influnced the music scene and Madonna and Janet will be known as most likely early influences for britney.

i'm a huge fan of both britney and janet and i think they should do a duet. omg that would be the most famous duet in all of history, and who ever said that madonna sings better then janet has a huge hear problem or must be somking.

I think that Britneys image, dancing style, and just style in general is a complete mirror of Janet. SHe is a wannabee whether or not Britney fans will admit it. Stronger is just like Janets video when she danced with the chair, and Boys is copy of All for you during the dance off part. I think the reason why Britney always claims Madona is her #1 inspiration is so she can secretly imitate Janet Jackson on almost every level. I could post pictures as well if I have to.

You can tell her dancing and even her manerisims on stage are very Janet..
But the things with Janet was, that she was so shy.. You would think with being this whole show biz family, she'd just be jumping out there and making herself known..
And a great thing about Janet is her lyrics.. That's one thing I don't think people can deny her or Michael.. Their writing skills are so prolific.. They both really know how to express themselves in writing..

I really love the Rhythm Nation video. But the dancing to me look to MJ inspired. I know she was on of the choreographers and all but to me it looked very inspired by Michael. All in all I still love Janet for her dancing, and some of her songs.

That's because it was supposed to be inspired by Michael. He somewhat came up with the dancing concept for that video.

Yeah she was and is still very shy. That's what I like about Janet...she can be very sexy and very shocking, but still a girl you can marry.
And yeah, Janet's an excelent writer.

I know. Michael came up with the concept. The choreography was his idea. Janet asked if she could us it.
