A musician who played alongside John Lennon and Paul McCartney in a skiffle band has died, it was confirmed today.

Eric Griffiths, who was 64, played guitar in The Quarrymen along with Lennon, McCartney and fellow teenage friends Pete Shotton and Rod Davis.

He was in the band, which took its name from Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool, from 1956 to 1958, before joining the merchant navy.

Lennon and McCartney went on to form the Beatles.

The Quarrymen re-formed in 1997 without its two most famous members, and the band toured the world and recently recorded an album.

Mr Griffiths, a married father of three, died last month of pancreatic cancer.

Bandmate Rod Davis said: “I owe Eric a big debt, because he invited me to join the band.

“He was a perfectionist in a lot of ways, but he had a great knowledge of music and a great sense of humour.”

I doubt they stayed a group, but I think they just figured it was time to capitalize on their history. '97 being about the time of Anthology and all...
