"William Wendell "Billy" Gilman III was born on May 24, 1988, and hails from Rhode Island. Billy started singing when he was just 3 years old and started performing at age 6 1/2. At age 8 he started working with a professional voice teacher and by 11 years old he was touring! His popular "One Voice" single was released on April 18, 2000 and the full-length CD's US release came on June 20. On July 19, 2000, about 1 month after the release of the full-length CD, the album went GOLD. To top that, on September 12 (less than 3 months after release) the album certified PLATINUM, having sold over ONE MILLION copies! Billy Gilman is the youngest artist ever to have his album achieve GOLD status, and the youngest solo artist to ever have a PLATINUM record. Billy had taken to the media like a storm - on radio, TV, and in the record stores. The phenomenal success of his album, single, and video had made Billy Gilman the best-selling debut artist of 2000.
Billy's second video, "Oklahoma", started showing on the Country Music video stations late in September and the single was released on October 10, 2000. The CD single includes the song "Warm and Fuzzy" from his second album "Classic Christmas", released in the US on October 17, 2000. Less than two months after its release, "Classic Christmas" was certified GOLD!
On Friday, November 10, 2000, Billy made out like a bandit at the Billboard Music Video Awards. The Epic Nashville clip swept all four categories in which it was nominated: best country new artist clip, best contemporary Christian clip, best contemporary Christian new artist clip, and best jazz/AC new artist clip." January 3, 2001 brought Billy and his fans some very exciting news - he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for "One Voice", and the song is also nominated for Best Country Song. (Unfortunately, neither nomination garnered a Grammy). Less than a week after this fantastic announcement, Billy won the American Music Award for Favorite New Artist - Country Music on January 8.
On May 8, 2001, Billy's third album, "Dare To Dream" was released. The album debuted on the Billboard Country Albums charts at #6, Billy's third top-ten album! It also debuted at #45 of the Top 200 Albums (all types of music).
In the summer of 2002, Billy took some time off from touring to work on his next CD, and to rest his voice after a bout with pneumonia. As his voice was recovering and maturing, the youngster still found time to go perform for the American Junior Miss Pageant, and on the "Go For It" Roadshow, and record a song for the "Stuart Little 2" Soundtrack!
