Banig Roberto has the voice of Whitney Houston and Patti LaBelle conmmbined
There are singers who can hit high notes and croon to the right melodies. And then there are singers who can perform with utmost passion, those who sweep listeners’ emotions and send them to tears at the end of each song.
From a child singing
sensation in Manila
Josephine “Banig”
Roberto is now a 22
-year-old world-class
performer
One such talent is Josephine “Banig” Roberto, who rose to local fame from a 7-year-old amateur in Ang Bagong Kampeon to one of the top singing talents in the United States. But for many years, little news about Banig has been heard in her homeland.
Whatever happened to this gem of a talent?
Apparently, Banig—all grown up at 22—is still making waves in the United States!
In an e-mail to the Life & Times this week, good news came from across the Pacific Ocean that the powerful belter has a new single that just hit the airwaves of over 80 radio stations in the United States.
Dubbed “Boogie On the Dance Floor,” the single recently stole the No. 3 spot on the urban chart of top radio trade publication CMJ Magazine. It also landed in the top 10 urban and dance play lists of FM stations KCSS, KGFN, KMUD, WDCE, WRFT, WRST and WSHC. Already, the song has been tagged as “the great club hit for the coming summer!”
The single, which is fast earning a following in the Miami club scene, is a cut from Banig’s sophomore release, the crossover pop-R&B dance anthem Silent Whispers. The single features different remixes, including an urban Atlanta flavor mix (“Ruff Party” Remix) with a tongue twisting rap sequence by up and coming female rapper Jojo. It also includes the “Red Velvet” mix, a strictly bass driven track with overlapping dubs and intense breaks. A raw a capella version showcases Banig’s vocal range.
More than a powerful voice
Her talent goes beyond a powerful voice. Banig projects this ability very well, but according to audiences she goes the extra mile by making every one feel like “she is singing to you alone.”
Banig’s first television appearance was at age 7, when she joined the eighties’s amateur singing contest Ang Bagong Kampeon. There she became champion for 7 consecutive weeks. Two years later, Banig started hitting the local concert scene. Her biggest break in the US entertainment scene came when she joined the International Star Search competition at age 10, and became the first and only Filipino champion to date.
The Star Search victory was followed by numerous guestings in mainstream television shows, such as The Arsenio Hall Show, Maury Povich Show, Into the Night with Rick Dees, Super Osborne Show, Good Day L.A., AM Los Angeles, and more.
“She’s got the vocal range of Whitney Houston and Patty LaBele combined. Watch out Whitney, careful Janet. We got a 13-year-old singing explosion!” exclaimed DJ and host Rick Dees in his show after watching Banig’s performance. Host Maury Povich said: “What a voice! We want to comeback as the next Whitney Houston, the next Mariah Carey, and better than that, the next Banig Roberto!”
The young talent thereafter sang the “Star Spangled Banner” in several sports events in the United States.
More concerts followed suit in 1989, a concert in Manila which was attended by half-a-million people; sold out shows in the Atlantic City Trump, Taj Mahal; solo concerts in the Wiltern Theater in Los Anegles, Cow Palace in San Francisco, City Center in New York, The Roxy and Hollywood Palladium in L.A., San Diego Convention Center and Copley Symphony Hall and many more.
In 1994, Banig finally released her first US album, entitled Can You Feel My Heart. She promoted this album in Southern and Northern California schools, and was warmly received by students of various races.
Perhaps still unknown to many, Banig doesn’t only dance and sing. She also plays musical instruments and collaborates with her younger sister, Jhoanna, in writing songs. Jhoanna is talent herself. She is a songwriter, dancer, choreographer, rapper, musician and producer—a testament that the performing arts run in the Roberto family’s blood.
Now a singer, songwriter and producer, Banig is currently working on her very first Hollywood movie soundtrack, which will include three songs that she wrote and produced with her sister. The soundtrack will be used in a film up for release in the late summer of 2005, featuring music artists Jordan Knight, a former New Kids On The Block member; and Mario who is a recording artist of J Records.

"I love it!!...It's my new perculator!" quotes Brad Corbitt, MD of WRFT.
Another DJ said, "I've listened to two of the cuts so far (the radio edit and the Ruff Party remix on the single). I love them both. They straddle the line between rhythm and blues (R&B) and house nicely, and I love her voice!" --DJ Muse, WCUW. "I feel that she has real talent!" -Scott Kerner, MD of WGDR. It's also spinning on KTUH (Honolulu), KECG (San Francisco), KLC (Portland), WAHS (Detroit), WIIT (Chicago), WPPJ (Pittsburgh), WKDU (Philadelphia), WRGP (Miami), WRUW (Cleveland) and WSHL (Boston).

The thick harmonies and soulful adlibs on the raw acapella version surely showcase Banig's vocal range. "Boogie On The Dance Floor" certainly possesses the potential of a club hit and a party favorite. It is also starting to hit the club scene in Miami, the US dance capital.
Singer/songwriter/producer Banig has also landed her very first Hollywood movie soundtrack project, which will include three songs she wrote and produced with Jhoanna Roberto, an up and coming songwriter/producer/rapper.
The movie will be released late summer of 2005. As a Filipino songwriter/producer, having songs included in a movie soundtrack is a great accomplishment.
The music artists in the movie include former New Kids On The Blocks Jordan Knight, J Records recording artist MARIO (with the hit song "Let Me Love You "), and a few other named artists who will also be on the soundtrack.
