Among other albums... Interesting mix
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Nirvana is going into the Library of Congress. Nirvana's 1991 album "Nevermind'' is among the 50 recordings being added to the National Recording Registry. The designation means the album will get special preservation. Other albums included in this year's induction are James Brown's 1965 "Live at the Apollo,'' the Beach Boys' 1966 "Pet Sounds,'' 1971's "The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East'' and Public Enemy's 1989 "Fear of a Black Planet.''

Nice selections! Me thinks they should've preserved PE's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" instead of "Fear Of A Black Planet", but oh well.

Well ya know, Dave needs a place for the Beach Boys, and I need a place for Hendrix, neither of which are on LD. What better place than the Beatles forum? Somehow me thinks Hendrix discussion wouldn't go down to well in the Backdoor forum.

Have you bought Michael Tolcher yet? DO IT
Also, Maria Mena, Inara George (soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooo good), Nellie McKay, Stroke 9, AND IF YOU DON't HAVE ANY STEELY DAN YET YOU'RE GOING TO HELL
There you go, now what are you doing still reading this? Get to work!

But I AM an expert on the subject of Steely Dan. The band, jerk. mwahahaha.

I like them alright. Haven't heard enough of their music to really make a decision.
If I was home right now I could download some songs or something, but instead, I'm at the library wasting time until my choir practice. I just saw an ex-boyfriend walking here, I'm in a crappy mood because the Yanks lost to the Sox, but other than that I'm peachy.

Oh Gran'pa J, don't say that! You're not that old!
And Dave, you're just mad because Steely Dan has lasted longer than the Beach Boys and they write cooler songs. It's okay, you can admit it and you won't shrivel up and blow away. And we'll all respect you more once you do and then you'll be free to come out of the closet as a Steely Dan and Donald F@gen fan.
db44
Apr 13th, 2005, 07:18 AM
Lasted longer? Uh, no. The Beach Boys, and especially Brian, are still out there, and they started about 10 years before SD.
I find most of Steely Dan's music boring and unimaginative.

Apr 13th, 2005, 01:37 PM

Wait a second, you're only like what, 2 months older than Dave? Loser.
And Dave, last time I checked the Beach Boys weren't together and putting out new albums consistently, nor do any of Brian's songs feature music similar to that of the hell stage in Earthworm Jim. As such...I win.
db44
Apr 14th, 2005, 12:50 AM
Well I haven't heard of SD selling out venues in recent years, or being consistantly on tour selling out venues like Brian. And what was the last movie that featured an SD song?
bekahbeans
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:23 AM
Last time I checked when John Fogerty goes on tour and releases albums he doesn't claim the glory for CCR, just for himself. Whatever Brian does on his own is not the Beach Boys. What I said still stands. Your argument is irrelevent. And since when does having your song in a movie mean you've made it?
db44
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:26 AM
It means as much as being part of Earthworm Jim.
Brian says he'd be willing to tour with Mike again. Sometimes it sounds like it will happen, although there's only three original members now (I guess you could include Bruce too, so four).
bekahbeans
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:27 AM
Guess that's true. Dammit.
And so what? The point is they haven't toured together and they haven't put out an album together or even announced they're back together. So until Hell freezes over again there is no Beach Boys to speak of today.
db44
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:31 AM
Maybe not, but there is still a larger Beach Boys fan base out there than fo SD I would wager... And The Beach Boys did much more to revolutionalize music than Steely Dan. What did SD bring that was so new?
bekahbeans
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:33 AM
A band doesn't have to revolutionize music to bring a lot to the table. I can't think of one band that has the same sound or feel as Steely Dan. They're unique and creative. They're also consistantly good. They don't have one bad album, and that's why they rock.
And they've never ever written a song about being true to your school.
db44
Apr 14th, 2005, 07:38 AM
But they wrote about going back to their old school. :p
