Yeah, I think it might've seemed a lot like "Joan Of Arcadia," but that's sad because it's not even close. I actually tried watching an episode of Joan its first season, and it was so boring, I couldn't even get through it. I saw that show more like a Touched By An Angel type of show. Wonderfalls, ::sigh:: great show.

Yeah, you're right Alias did get picked up somewhat early -- I think end of February time -- because ABC had faith in it. But in the beginning, Alias wasn't making the transition from the whole cult favorite situation to garnering high Nielsen ratings. They were actually getting an average of about 9.2 million viewers, which is pretty low for a big network like ABC. I remember Alias not getting the viewership that it deserved back in 2001 though. ;) But it's all good because it's a great show and rightfully picked up more and more viewers. ^_^

And then for Veronica Mars, we weren't supposed to hear about the season pickup until May time. I guess that is somewhat late, but we've only recently (like within the last month I guess?) been hearing about other shows on ABC I think...hehe.

lol, yeah it's really hard for a show like VM to draw in viewers with such an unknown cast. Francis Capra (from "Kazaam" haha) and Enrico Colantoni. Kristen Bell is a rising star though, and I'm in love with Jason Dohring (Logan). On Alias, Jennifer Garner was still somewhat unknown (at that point, people knew her for being on Felicity, Dude Where's My Car, and that failed Jennifer Love Hewitt pilot). Michael Vartan was relatively big with his role in Never Been Kissed. And I'm sure people knew who Victor Garber was. Maybe Kristen Bell can follow Jennifer Garner's lead and win a Golden Globe. I would be so proud of my little marshmellow. Hehe. :love:

Smackdown does...but you're generally correct. 2million for UPN is very good. But they don't compare it to their own shows...they compare it to the other networks shows. And when ABC, WB, FOX, CBS, NBC, MTV, HBO, SHOTIME, and other channels are pulling in 3 times that amount, the execs aren't happy.

You don't see car companies going "Well...the car isn't selling that well..but since it's more than OUR other cars...we'll keep it." No they want to be better than somebody else...it's stupid really..how many talented actors lose their jobs because the damned executives need to out do other networks to compensate for the fact that they are no longer pleasing their mistresses in the bedroom any longer :(

The big difference here is that UPN likes Veronica Mars, actually believes in it and feels it's the sort of show that enhances their brand. NBC was never so generous toward Boomtown, which was manhandled during its first season and only got renewed because of the accolades it received, including the coveted Peabody. NBC was pretty much shamed into renewing Boomtown, but retaliated by giving it an inhospitable Friday time period while attempting to dumb it down. I can't guarantee that Veronica Mars will become even marginally successful in its second year, but I feel confident UPN will at least not stand in its way.

And June wrote in to ask, "Do you think UPN should start the second season of Veronica Mars in January instead of September? Since Veronica, by definition, is a seasonlong mystery, it would be better for the audience to see a new episode each week instead of waiting through the long break between Thanksgiving and New Year's. I can't imagine a show like Veronica would repeat well. On the other hand, would waiting this long hurt the show's ratings even more? It's a delicate balance, but I'm just thankful UPN hasn't given up on the show."

This is a really tricky but smart question. As I've often written, I'm a big fan of the straight-through scheduling of Alias and 24. But Veronica, and UPN, are operating on a different and smaller scale. I'm thinking that Veronica needs to be on the air more often than not, whether in repeats or originals, so the maximum number of people have the chance to catch the show even though its serialized arcs work against casual, hit-or-miss viewing. I still have a feeling UPN wouldn't want to keep it out of sight for so long, even if it could afford to.

Good points, but Boomtown is one show. Many others (which I cannot name off the top of my head) haven't faired so well. I mean just look at Dark Angel for FOX. FOX LOVED Dark Angel, and they ditched it....quite randomly.

UPN Loved Enterprise. They Loved being part of the Star Trek empire. Ratings slumped, they BARELY got a renewal, and it ended up being canceled anyways. Star Trek FANS wanted it to keep going, because they wanted to know how deep into the series it went. If TREKIES can't keep a show going, which range from ages 70something down to teenagers, I doubt a bunch of Veronica Mars fans would fair much better -shrug-

Star Trek needed to end, the damn show was outdated. That argument isn't valid IMO.

Besides if the show really was in going to get cancelled next season by UPN, I think they would pitch it to other networks...The creator said HBO wanted it but wanted the show to have more sex...if I remember correctly. Maybe after seeing how well the show is doing now though (well it's fanbase, ratings eh, but I think this will change as over the past few weeks there have been a ton of new fans), they would take it (of course this is just if UPN decides to cancel it but I don't see that happening)

^My nieces watch the show. I've watched it before, didn't dislike it, I just found other shows around that time more interesting. But after seeing Kristen Bell in the Shotime movie, I realized she was a pretty nifty actress and I've watched the last 2 episodes.

Ok I'm starting to get mad! They keep teasing me putting Logan and Veronica together than something happens with like 5 min. left and it all goes down the craper! :crazy:

First off, let me say tonight episode was sooooo awesome! I was in shock when Duncan told her they were brother and sister. I had my hand to my mouth lol. I thought Logan was very sweet in this episode and boy were they sexing it up there for awhile. But the cameras at the end was another hand to my mouth moment. I think the cameras will play a big role in the murder case for sure and that it wasnt Logan who set them up. I think maybe Aaron put them there.....hmmm.

Now Logan and Veronica got more problems to deal with ugh....Veronica has once again left Logan all alone wondering what the f happened. He was just preaching to Veronica that she should trust him. Umm hmm problems coming for them.

Duncan smashing that window has a lot of promise for drama because he isnt over Veronica. Yikes. Then the last scene with Lianne returning after Veronica just found out she was Duncan's sister has got to be odd......THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD.

As for next week..woah! It looks a horror movie...I can't wait to see who the murderer is and what trouble Veronica has to get herself out of. I have never loved a show this much....and that says a lot because I usually hate everything.

It's tough to explain the show in words, you just have to try watching it. Kristen Bell plays Veronica with so much spunk, you gotta love it. I dunno, I thought it'd be cheesy too, but it's not. I watch a lot of crappy television (just because I do, okay? lol) but Veronica Mars is definitely not one of them. :)

You mean when we saw Lilly bludgeoned by Mrs. Kane by the pool? That was us getting to see inside Veronica's head as she played out different possibilities of Lilly's death. Lilly was Mrs. Kane's daughter. No one has been trying to kill Veronica (yet).

We still don't know who killed Lilly actually. And as mentioned above, the scenario with Mrs. Kane killing her daughter was actually one of many that Veronica was contemplating. She was trying to figure out what could've possibly happened. We don't find out until next week who really did it. :eek: Can't wait.

well if this person watched last nights episode as their first episode, i'd say they would be completely lost...it's the one episode before the finale, that's a BIT late in the season don't you think?

over the show's break they did show repeats of episodes and there is a community that has links to episodes in which probably 200 people join every week with comments like "ive heard it's so good i wanna see it from the beginning" and they are replaying the show this summer, plus with the dvd out in september before season 2.

i think it'll bring in higher ratings next season definitley.

I think it's most likely either Logan or Duncan. Cause they showed the clock as being 3AM (and some change) for a reason to indicate that significant time has passed since the supposed beat down (which I'm hoping doesn't happen haha). But I'm leaning towards Duncan because her reaction to Logan wouldn't be that happy. She'd act more solemn because of her false accusations, and if anything, Logan would be looking a hot mess (all beat up and stuff) if he were knockin on her door. *sigh* I love this show.

I actually think it will be Wallace. When Veronica answered the door she looked like she was really happy to see that person. Considering what has happened with her and Logan, I dont think her facial expression would be the way it was if Logan was there. Same story with Duncan...after all they have been through she would have an awkward face if he was at the door. But with Wallace, they are BFF so she would be happy to see him. Plus Alicia probably told him what happened because Veronica came to her earlier to go comfort Keith...so ALicia probably told Wallace to go comfort Veronica. Yeah, it just dawned on me the inprobability of it actually being him. THOMAS: I’m worried about having as good a Season 2 mystery as we had in Season 1, but I really love the idea. I love our Season 2 idea, so I’m actually moderately confident.

THOMAS: I probably have Season 2 as planned as Season 1 was, when I went in, which is to say, I know the broad strokes, I know who did it, I know how it was done, I know the big arcs, but we’re always filling in the details. Those are week to week. It’s a week to week challenge in the writers room figuring out how much information we want to dole out to the audience.

THOMAS: There is going to be death, if that’s vague enough. I wish I could say more than that. People will die. I can’t do a VERONICA MARS season long mystery about insurance fraud.

THOMAS: My wife to be is friends with Charisma Carpenter who is a huge fan of the show, so I’m waiting for the right moment to throw Charisma into it as well. Between Charisma and Alyson, that’s the extent of my BUFFY plans.

iF MAGAZINE: Is the season finale is a huge action episode and more ambitious than the normal episode?

THOMAS: That’s totally true. Our normal budget for an episode is right around $1.7 million, and I think we spent $400,000 extra. We shot a full extra day with our normal unit and three days of second unit, so there is more action than you’ve ever seen on VERONICA MARS.

iF MAGAZINE: Will the season finale be satisfying or will it be a cliffhanger?

THOMAS: We’re going to pick up next year, at the beginning of the school year in the show. I think there’s going to be 80 percent total satisfaction. People will know who killed Lilly Kane. And there won’t be that twist at the end that "perhaps they didn’t do it." I’m not going to be leaving people like that. However, at the end of the episode, it gives us a pretty big cliffhanger question as well.

iF MAGAZINE: Will the DVD box set come out before Season 2 comes out?

THOMAS: That’s the plan, but there’s a downside to that. There was much worries on our end trying to decide what to do. We were given the option of "you can release it January next year with all the bells and whistles or we can rush it out before the next season starts, but it will just be the episodes and maybe a blooper reel." After a lot of consternation, we chose to get it out sooner, make it so it will help introduce the new season. I know I’ve been introduced to series through complete box sets. I watched Season 2 of 24, because I watched Season 1 on DVD. That’s the trade off. Of course the ultimate wish is five years from now we’re doing the complete box set retrospective, where we get to add all the commentaries

The scene with them in the pool was weird because I never knew Kristen Bell was so tiny, and you really wouldn't think Amanda would have the curves that she does, but first seeing her in that episode of "House" and now on here, it's like o_0.

Exactly my sentiments...before sticking it out through all the episodes. It's not groundbreaking or anything, and the yet-another-high-school-superteen theme made me not want to like it, but it turns out that it is a worthwhile show--certainly better than all the other overhyped shows it premiered with. And the finale is well worth your time (heralded by critics as one of the best finales ever--if not the best.) But of course, you won't be able to fully appreciate it w/o having seen the season as a whole.

Now, regarding my fruitless efforts to get Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas on the phone to discuss the show's alleged Season 2 overhaul, there's been a major development on that front. After weeks of going through the proper channels to set up the interview and getting nowhere, I was contacted by Rob himself! Turns out he read the latest SOS I posted in last week's AA and tracked me down. That's the kind of stunt that earns people titles like "The Coolest TV Producer on the Planet (Next to J.J. Abrams)." And it gets even better: Less than 24 hours after first contact was made, Rob gave me an exclusive, no-holds-barred, superscoopilicious interview in which he addressed all of the rumored changes happening on Mars — and then some. In fact, he gave me so much good stuff that, instead of sprinkling his responses throughout AA, I decided to present the entire Q&A in its entirety. But if you're one of those folks who doesn't like knowing what's gonna happen before it happens, stop reading now. Trust me, it's a spoilerphobe's worst nightmare come true. With that said, I interrupt this week's AA for an exclusive, no-holds-barred, superscoopilicious interview with Rob Thomas. (Non-Mars fans can scroll past the interview to read the rest of AA. Ausiello: So what are these changes UPN president Dawn Ostroff wants you to make to Veronica Mars next season? I'm worried.
Rob Thomas: They're not major. She wants more presence from twentysomething characters in the show. She wants a bit more diversity in the cast. And she wants it sexier, which we feel we're accomplishing by playing up the Logan-Veronica-Duncan triangle in Season 2. They're not jamming us too hard on anything that hurts the integrity of the show.

Ausiello: What twentysomething characters? New ones?
Thomas: I know the Tara Reid rumor got out there, which really tended to freak people out. Per UPN's notes, they feel like, "We're putting you guys after our top show — America's Next Top Model — and we want you to retain some of the audience. So put somebody in there who represents that age group." Which was fine. I had planned on adding a sort of trophy wife/stepmother to Beaver and Casablancas next season. And then we were just putting lists together of people who could play her and Tara Reid was on a list. I'm not sure how it got to the point that we had hired her, but that's not going to happen.

Ausiello: Tara Reid's not going to happen?
Thomas: Right.

Ausiello: Phew.
Thomas: But the character is — at least partially to address UPN's desire to get more of a twentysomething presence. They wanted us to have Veronica take some college classes to bring more twentysomethings into the show.

Ausiello: You're joking. Please tell me you're joking.
Thomas: It's not even creatively that I hated that note. I didn't. It's just that we're so stretched financially. And budgetwise, I don't have college sets; I don't have college actors. It would have been a huge budgetary problem, so we're trying to address the twentysomething note in a more financially prudent way.

Ausiello: Tell me a little bit more about the trophy-wife character.
Thomas: She'll be in her mid-twenties, a former Laker girl. Think Bonnie Bakley but with better looks.

Ausiello: The diversity thing kind of baffles me. Your cast is already pretty diverse.
Thomas: That's what I thought, too. [Laughs] They have asked for another African-American female in our cast, which we are going to do. She will be a student.

Ausiello: What about rumors of a new, older love interest for Veronica?
Thomas: That was just one of the things they threw up on the board. And it was all wrapped up in that "Veronica can take college classes and maybe she can become involved with an older guy" thing, which made me think, "Didn't we do that last year?"

Ausiello: Do they watch the show?
Thomas: They do watch the show. It's funny, following Top Model, they're really hitting us to appeal to that audience. And I'm happy to do that as long as the integrity of the show remains. The 28-year-old trophy-wife stepmother is sort of a traditional noir character, so I'm happy to include it. I think we can find a happy balance between art and commerce.

Ausiello: Is it true that you're killing off a major character?
Thomas: No. The thing I read was in Episode 6 we're gonna kill off one of our main characters, and that's not true. But in order to make the budget work, a number of actors on the show lost a few episodes in their contracts. I wouldn't have done that of my own volition. That was forced on me.

Ausiello: Were Logan or Papa Mars impacted?
Thomas: No, it's not Logan or her father. It's just about everyone else.

Ausiello: Are we talking drastic reductions? Like some characters are only gonna be in one or two episodes?
Thomas: No, no, no. Far from that. It's like one went from 22 to 16. One went from 16 to 12.

Ausiello: Weevill (Francis Capra)?
Thomas: He's gone from 16 to 12.

Ausiello: Deputy Leo (Max Greenfield)?
Thomas: Max has a new comedy [Modern Men] on WB next fall. Max is one of my favorite people to work with. He has said any day he has off he's willing to come down to San Diego and shoot Veronica Mars. I actually have him written into a scene in the first episode. The question is whether his schedule and our budget will allow it. But the scene won't be, "He's going away!" I think we could always go back to Deputy Leo. I like having him handy. I like Veronica having a relationship with somebody in the local sheriff's department.

Ausiello: Aaron Echolls (Harry Hamlin)?
Thomas: We actually have him in the budget for two episodes. Seeing Aaron again in Season 2 around the time his trial rolls around is something we're planning on; it's on our storyboard. But at the same time, we're going to introduce a couple new important sets of parents, in the same way we got to know the Kanes and Ackles in Season 1.

Ausiello: Whose parents?
Thomas: One will be the father of the new African-American character, who we have not cast yet. I think the name of the character is Terrence Chase, and his daughter is Jackie Chase. And then we're going to meet a character who's running for mayor named Woody Goodman, and he's going to have a daughter who goes to the high school, who we never met. We'll introduce her.

Ausiello: What about Amanda Seyfried, who played Lilly Kane? Will we see her again?
Thomas: There are no plans to see her. Again, we adore her. She was such a money character for us this year.

Ausiello: And Alyson Hannigan?
Thomas: She also has a new series [CBS' How I Met Your Mother]. But if we can work it into her schedule and we've got a story line that would work for her, we'd love to see her.

Ausiello: OK, I've got a couple story-line-related questions: Is Logan's mother really dead?
Thomas: Yes.

Ausiello: Will Veronica and Wallace become stepsiblings this year?
Thomas: I don't wanna give that away.

Ausiello: Who's at the door?
Thomas: [Laughs] This is what I will tell you: I feel like our audience will feel cheated if it's anyone other than Logan or Duncan. A lot of people online have made very valid cases why it would be Wallace, and that the reaction Veronica gives would only be for her true friend, and I understand that. And yet, we have set Logan-Veronica-Duncan up as the first leg of the romantic triangle of Season 2, and I feel like it would really disturb the fans if we copped out on that answer. And I'm not going to cop out on that.

Ausiello: What can you tease about this season's overriding mystery?
Thomas: It'll be significantly different from Season 1. It won't be, "A friend of Veronica's dies and she seeks justice." It will have a different flavor, a different motivation than that. And yet people can assume that we're not going to do a 22-episode mystery about insurance fraud. So it'll be big.

Ausiello: It all sounds great, but I have to admit: I'm troubled by the level of interference on UPN's part.
Thomas: Last year for four or five episodes they were in our grill, and it was a very difficult working environment. But once they started seeing the cut episodes and they started airing and getting feedback, they became incredibly supportive — the most supportive environment I've ever been in.

Ausiello: And now?
Thomas: They are nervous once again. They have given us their best time slot and they want this to work. So, again they're back in our... [pauses] the notes calls are taking a little longer and we're having a minibattle here on the first episode. But right now we're not shooting anything or writing anything that I'm not happy with, so they haven't tinkered us into silliness.

Hey gang,

As promised, I'm writing to give some early scoop on Veronica Mars.

I'm afraid that I'm unable to respond to each letter I've received personally, but I have read all of them. Thanks for the very kind words and the criticism. The writing staff went back to work last week. We've broken the first two episodes of Season 2. I'll write the first one and Diane Ruggiero will write the second.

First, let me clear up a few of the rumors floating around out there.

We are adding some new cast members. and Beaver Casablancas will become series regulars. We will feature their step mother, a former Laker girl, current trophy-wife to Big Casablancas. Her name is Kendall Lacy Casablancas.

We have not cast this role, yet, but in an early meeting, I described the character as Bunny Lebowski "ten years later." (Those of you who haven't seen The Big Lebowski, go rent it now!) Consequently, Tara Reid's name came up. She is/was one name on a very long list. We have not offered the role to anyone. The network wants us to cast a name actor, but most name actors won't do a six to ten episode arc on UPN, so my best guess is that eventually we'll be allowed to cast it normally.

We're also casting the role of Jackie Chase, the daughter of a future hall of fame baseball player, Terrance Chase. Her father will be the baseball equivalent of Magic Johnson. Jackie has spent the previous 17 years of her life living with her mother in Manhattan, but her mother has given up on wild child Jackie and is sending her to live with her father in Neptune.

Another scoop. You heard it here first. Keith will be asked to, once again, run for sheriff by the shoo-in candidate for mayor, Woody Goodman.

We are not killing off a character six episodes in. The network asked us to add a few characters. Unfortunately, no one gave us any more money in our budget, so we did have to trim the number of episodes of some of our regular characters to make financial space in the show. I hated to do this. I love our cast.

Alyson Hannigan's show got picked up, so it'll be tough to get her back next year, but we love her and if there's a chance, and we can afford her, we will.

Max Greenfield's (Deputy Leo) show also got picked up. Same story for him.

Kyle Secor's show got picked up. He plays Geena Davis' first husband on that new NBC series.

In personal news...

I'm married. Katie and I made it legal May 7th. Greta turned 11 weeks, yesterday. Here's a current shot. Tomorrow will be my first father's day that I've been on the receiving end. Very exciting indeed.

I spent what should've been my honeymoon/hiatus down in an L.A. County Courthouse. I was selected as a juror ALTERNATE for a two-week rape trial. It was no fun at all. You might expect Veronica to get selected as a juror this year on the show, as I had plenty of time to brainstorm on this particular idea.

Also, as I mentioned on the TWoP music thread, I'm going to have a contest this year.

Here's how it works. You e-mail me MP3s of unsigned bands. I'll make sure that at least once every four episodes, we'll use one of these bands in the show. We'll pay the band $1000 for the use. Send these MP3s along with band contact information to music@slaverats.com. I'd love to use bands that are actually fans of the show, but it's no requirement. As most of you know, I've used quite a few songs by Austin, TX bands. That's my home. Those are the bands I know, but y'all have the chance to enlighten me about your particular region now.

DVD news...

As I mentioned here on the site, Warner Home Video gave us a choice between releasing the season 1 DVD before season 2 began without bells and whistles or putting out the DVD in January with
commentary,
etc. We opted to get the DVD out as early as possible. Now, unfortunately, the DVD won't be out until October without all the extra goodies. It's been explained to us that they don't want to compete with the O.C. and Desperate Housewives DVDs that are coming out in September. I'm very bummed out about this, as I wanted people who didn't watch the show last year to be able to get the DVDs and catch up before season 2 began. Oh well...

Soundtrack news...

We still haven't found a label that wants to do the soundtrack. We
think we will, but we haven't, yet.

Here's my idea for more music use in Season 2. I'm being
"encouraged" by both the studio and network to have a bigger music component in the series. I can't imagine that every week goes to see the Killers play the coffee shop. I don't want to break reality in that way.
BUT,
I think what might be cool would be to have musicians come on and sing karaoke. So, imagine if we get Beck to come on and play just some random karaoke singer doing a version of... oh... I don't know... "Three Times a Lady" or Tegan and Sarah doing "Barracuda." We'd actually use the new song they want to promote elsewhere in the episode, but we'd get something unique for the show.I'm not sure if the labels or artists will be into the idea, but I'm going to push for it. It could make for a cool Season 2 soundtrack.

Other news...

The show has gotten some great Emmy buzz. TV Guide listed Veronica Mars and Kristen Bell among their choices for Emmy nominations. Entertainment Weekly mentioned Kristen. The Television Critics of America nominated Veronica Mars for "Best New Show" and Kristen for Best Performer in a Drama." She was the only woman nominated. Television Weekly picked Veronica Mars as a "Best Drama" nominee, Kristen as a "Best Actress" nominee and the Veronica Mars "Pilot" as a nominee in the "Best Writing in a Drama" category.

Due to some idiocy on my part, I lost the e-mail addresses of the first 75 people who wrote to me. If you know one of these people, please pass along my regrets and ask them to write in again. I'll try not to screw this up again.
