(Indianapolis, IN) -- Fourteen of 20 cars dropped out of Sunday's U.S. Grand Prix race before the first official lap. The decision enraged thousands at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and puts the future of the race in jeopardy. Teams that withdrew say they feared for their drivers' safety. [driver] David Coulthard blamed unsafe Michelin tires that they use and knows that no one is happy with the decision not to race.

The remaining six cars that used Bridgestone tires finished the 73 laps needed to accept their rewards. The problems with Michelin tires began Friday when two drivers encountered serious deflation problems during practice. Replacement tires flown in overnight from France reportedly had the same problems. The race's sanctioning group, FIA, requires a team to use the same set of tires for qualifications and the race. All that winner Michael Schumacher could say as he walked back to his garage was that it was a very unique Grand Prix.

The fans were throwing things on the track.

yea i read about this.....i think id be pretty upset if i was them....F1 should have done something to prevent their drivers from boycotting.....in my mind, F1 didnt put safety first as the teams did...they are now calling all the teams to Paris and are saying they will be punished.....i think its pretty sad when a sport punishes their teams for something like this....im a huge race fan, racing is awesome...but no matter what you have to put the drivers safety first and F1 didnt in this case...they wanted to stick by their rules and have their teams run unsafe tires....someone could have been killed easily.

Bridgstone racers apparently raced the previous races on unsafe tires, and took the losses because of it. They just raced slower. The Michilin teams are apparently upset now because the shoe's on the other foot, but they didn't give the Bridgstone teams any quarter.

My friend is a big F1 fan. He said the teams which use Michelin should have raced slow and instead of worrying about the one dangerous they should have just cut through pit row.

all but one team signed a petition to put a chicane in before the turn...the team that didnt sign it...finished 1 and 2.

personally, id rather the drivers stand up and boycott when the series wants them to race in unsafe conditions....purposely "racing" slower, is not racing to me.....also...would they go down pit road at full speed? thats unsafe in its self for all the pit crews....why take a chance at running a race if you know you arent going to win and you have to "sit back" the entire race...you take the chance of hurting a driver, crewmember, and destroying a car.

the fans need their money back though, and F1 needs to shoulder some of the blame on this.

How do you punish a team which played by the rules and lost other races though, just because now everyone else is feeling the pains they had.
