PageSix.com:
"WHILE Starbucks draws the line at anal sex with a prostitute, oral sex in a theater is apparently OK. The coffee mega-chain recently passed on selling Bruce Springsteen's new CD, "Devils and Dust," at its stores because of a song graphically detailing an encounter with a hooker. But Starbucks is selling Alanis Morissette's new acoustic re-recording of her smash 1995 hit, "Jagged Little Pill," which includes a tune with references to a movie theater romp as well as other sexually graphic lyrics. A Starbucks spokeswoman says the explicit Springsteen lyric was one factor — but not the main one — in the decision not to carry the CD at its stores nationwide. With Morissette, "we see it really as an event album for us. We're really excited about it.'"

As far as we know, Alanis didn't pocket any coin for "going down on you in a theater" . Probably the moral line the coffee heads consider for banning music.

......new acoustic re-recording of her smash 1995 hit, "Jagged Little Pill,"...
...."we see it really as an event album for us. We're really excited about it.'"
She's re-recording her first record (actually third if you count the two disco records that tanked) and it's "an event album". So why am I not excited?

I find it odd the Alanis who has time and time again spoken about sexual repression and censorship...the hypocrisy of the morally rightgeous, would be linked to a company that picks and chooses what is acceptable. Or maybe she is oblivious to the whole Brew-ha-ha. Clever coffeehouse having a spokewoman doin the talking. Not ok to pay..but fine to give it up. Curious as to the "main reason" D&D wasn't marketed."Event album"?? as opposed to what other category? I was just screwing round in the studio album? My drummer lost a leg and we wanna test out the new kit album? My whole band went in for therapy album?

I bet the anal sex with a prostitute was a front (or back :D ) for the real reason...
My guess is that Bruce didn't want to get into the 'endorsement' issues that Alanis now has herself into... with the re-release of her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill being sold exclusively at Starbucks for 6 weeks prior to being released anywhere else.

"As of June 13, HMV will be removing all Alanis products from our stores, consistent with the views of the majority of our customers, and will be returning all Alanis product to the record company,'' he wrote in an e-mail Thursday.

I'm with you on this one. It's like she's coming out with a reunion album, except the reunion is with herself.

Starbucks pulled Devils and Dust mostly because it was not going to sell much. Why waste store shelves on an album no one will buy. Jagged Little Pill was one of the best selling albums of all time... there's a better chance of someone picking up the acoustic version of that album than Devils and Dust. Most people (outside of the Northeast) don't like Bruce's E Street stuff, why would they his solo disc?

Well if you ever have gotten a coffee at Starbucks and cruised through the discs laying there...trust me, Devils and Dust has a lot better chance of selling than most of them. Most of the discs are themed. Like Love songs in the Spring" or other artists doing songs that influenced the Stones or something. Or a very watered down Sinatra thing. There's only a few regular discs there...so i have to disagree. I mean an Etta James compilation is great stuff but they will sell more Bruce anything so i have to disagree.

And not to be too picky with you but the "most people out of the northeast thing" kinda threw me too. Did you see the 3 shows that have beedn scheduled in Ohio..somehow us farmers got the word that it's ok to like him--LOL.

We here in Wisconsin, Kinda consider Ohio, at least Cleveland, Toledo to be part of the industrial northeast. Cincy on the other hand....................

Paul --i guess if i lived in Wisconsin maybe i would see that but even Pittsburgh is not considered part of the Philly, NYC, Boston northeast thing. Besides the Big Ten goes as far east now as State College, Pa. so i guess it's up for interpretation. And Columbus seems to be the part of Ohio where things seem to be different...sort of like Ohio is 2 states. My point was the attitude of the post was sort of like if you don't live in Jersey or NYC, how could you possibly get the E Street Band thing..which was baffling. By the way, I went to a Brewers game a few years back and saw people tailgating for baseball(obviously were getting ready for the Packers to start) which made me smile...so salute to you.

From the Big East Conference Website:
In 2005-06, the league will add five new members: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.
Marquette and DePaul aren't even in the Eastern Time Zone, sheesh

hey Annie, I think you're stretching the amount of cred you should give Alanis...
also, would you have dissed Bruce if he closely aligned himself with Starbucks? maybe not a full exclusive like Alanis, but what about a disc with an extra song or two sold only at Starbucks?
Dirty Annie

Yeah D...You know I would have dissed Bruce had he alligned himself with Starbucks. I hate the coffee. And I am pretty sick on an extra song or two...the word exclusive....and all the other crap that is feeding people a little bit at a time. I know the marketing stategies and all but I am tired of it. Nice little packages...half cds..cute boxing. What's in it?
I happen to like Alanis's interviews regarding oppression sexual or otherwise and realize she went through a meat grinder when "Jagged" did so well and I myself would try anything to be heard as she put it. And yes I am giving too much cred for somethin thats probably out of her hands. I give too much credit to a lot of things...lol.
My beef in a nutshell...whats with the splitting hairs about what is acceptable? It's stupid. Make the coffee ...just make the coffee.

Great point. Problem with selling "product" at retail is that you have to deal with people whose main business is selling lawn chairs/clothes/coffee what have you, and they dictate the creative process.....as an album is being written/recorded/designed the thought is always, can we sel this at Wal*Mart/Target/Starbucks whatever.
It's really sad.

So D, as a musician, you are saying that what you thought of that on the demo tapes or on current material with AB? Get it to the people whatever way possible? Would you be as selective as they are... Maybe not Home Depot but Bed Bath and Beyond? Or would you leave the whole thing in your marketing department hands and lawyers and just have them send ya the check?
Where does it stop? Would artists then create songs based on the demographics of a specialty store hoping for a subliminal tie in to the pleasantries of purchasing plungers and music? A f'd up version of "Do ya know the muffin man" for Starbucks? Baby, you can Drive my Car" for Toyota Dealers. I know I exaggerate. But ya get what I mean?
I have spoken to some people regarding the loss of creative and financial control on CDs...the concept of marketing via the internet. With the capabilities of do-it-yourself wizardy could a band attempt to cut out the middle man and keep more for themselves...have control over their creative processes. No deadlines set...no budget guidelines? If they take a fall it's on a small scale loss ....if the buzz is good then they proceed forward in other avenues. Is it possible not to be a slave to marketing at Krispy Kremes nowadays? Are you saying no way in hell? Would it be wiser to do the demographics check and distribution investigation and then start writing music? Not trying to be a smart*ss but this is stuff that crosses my naive and twisted mind. Sad indeed.
I always have wondered what drove an artist on the jumping off point...creative expression?I would hope so at first. And then at what point, if not from the beginning, does making money reign supreme and the machine take over and you find yourself doing the jig to time constraints and cash flow? I do love the confused part of an artists coming into their own, like Alanis, or Bruce for that matter ,when they take misteps or as she did, have to flee to India to chill. I believe in so many cases the best prior to great success came from stabs at things and not supreme knowledge of
how it's done. My fear is that with anything else sophistication and slick knowledge kills creation, binds it or worse yet drives it.
