‘Hogan knows best’ for sure
Not too long ago I wrote a column about how I missed Hulk Hogan the wrestler. Never in a million years did I imagine I would get a glimpse of Hulk the dad.
Hogan is featured on a reality TV show “Hogan Knows Best” each Sunday evening on VH1. Hulk, best known as the bright yellow T-shirt ripping, muscle-rippling brute from the WWF, has a softer side, his family.
I worshipped Hulk as a young girl. I thought he was the best wrestler - I still do. Hulk has a charisma that leaves a lasting impression. And now, he is taking his dramatic and strong personality to the tube in a hilarious, heartfelt show.
I watched the series premiere in which Brooke, Hogan’s blonde-bombshell of a daughter, gets asked out by a college guy named Adam. Brooke, just turning 16, is thrilled at the idea of dating the 22-year-old “hottie.”
Brooke tells Adam, “I have to ask my parents.”
I remember the first guy who asked me out on a real date. His name was Aaron. I was 15 and he was 17. My dad and mom said “No way; You aren’t old enough to date yet.” I was devastated, because I had a huge crush on him. Now I know they were probably right.
Poor Brooke, she was in for a real scene. First she asks her mom, Linda, who tells Brooke she must ask her father.
Linda seems to be willing to give Adam a chance but just as soon as she bends to the idea Hulk body slams it.
“Not as long as my name is Hulk Hogan,” he said.
I love Hulk. He is quite charming inside the ring, but outside the ring he is even more charming as a provider and protector.
Soon after, Brooke works over her stout dad and he says, “I’ll sleep on it,” with a quick grumble.
Adam is exactly what dads all over America don’t want their teenaged daughters dating. He is easy on the eyes, he drives a loud, fast, souped up car, he is in college - which means he has “experience” if you get the drift and he is cocky and confident.
After Hulk sleeps on it he decides that Brooke can go, but she must be home by dark, she must call him a few times during the date, she must take her car and, what every daughter dreads, he must have a talk with Adam.
I remember the talk thing. My dad never had much of a “talk” with my dates, but he did insist on meeting them and you better believe he watched out the window to see if they opened the door for me - if they didn’t I heard about it later.
After Brooke gets the good news from dad, she goes running off to plan her outfit or whatever and Hulk, once again, lets out a grumble. Soon grumbles turn to a master plan. Enter Nick Hogan, Hulks other teenaged offspring. Hulk and Nick decide planting a tracking device in Brooke’s car is the perfect way to “keep an eye on her.” Hulk calls the plan “extra protection.” While Brooke is too busy engrossed with the thought of her date, Hulk and Nick escape to the car dealer to have the device installed. Hulk is ready to meet his match.
The time arrives for the date and Hulk is poised and prepared for his confrontation.
Adam knocks on the door with flowers in hand. Hulk intervenes taking the flowers and whisking Adam off for “a talk.”
Adam does the proverbial kissing up to Hulk, who shows no appreciation and quickly gets to the point: sex. Hulk wants to know all about Adam’s sex life and even goes so far to ask the hunky college guy if he has had an AIDS test. The talk ends with Adam assuring Hulk that they are both in the same “arena” and Adam refers to it as “Hulk’s arena.”
So, off Brooke and Adam go. He doesn’t open the door for her. Ouch.
Hulk exclaims, “That was the first jabronie move.”
Not even five minutes after Brooke is out the door, Nick and Hulk are talking and Nick starts spilling information about Adam that makes Hulk and Linda cringe.
There is only one thing Hulk can do at this point: follow Brooke on her date.
Hulk and Nick pull up seats, snacks in hand, to watch Brooke’s car on the computer screen. He called her twice and kept a sharp eye on that tracking device.
In the end Brooke came home in one piece and Hulk was right at the door when she got home. There would be no kiss for young Brooke this time. And according to Hogan, there wouldn’t be a next time.
During the show I was cringing for Brooke and laughing at the same time. I felt for the young coming of age Hogan hottie. She’s just being a normal teen, but in the end, Hogan does know best.
