BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ A Stamford woman was sentenced for forging her daughter's checks and depositing them into her own bank account.

Lia Russo Gomez yesterday was sentenced to a year and a day.

The Stamford woman and her daughter who was nine years old at the time were injured in an airline crash on Long Island that killed 73 other passengers in 1990.

Gomez received an 850-thousand dollar settlement. Her daughter was awarded about eight thousand three hundred dollars a month from the ages of 18 to 25.

But prosecutors say Gomez told her daughter the checks came every two months. She forged 29 of her daughter's checks for four years, acquiring more than 241-thousand dollars.

Gomez says she began taking the checks when she ran into financial problems on investment properties. Her lawyer says she used them to support her family.
