WASHINGTON -President Bush said Tuesday that "I take responsibility" for failures in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and said the disaster raised broader questions about the government's ability to respond to natural disasters as well as terror attacks.

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at joint White House news conference with the president of
Iraq.

"To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said.

The president was asked whether people should be worried about the government's ability to handle another terrorist attack given failures in responding to Katrina.

"Are we capable of dealing with a severe attack? That's a very important question and it's in the national interest that we find out what went on so we can better respond," Bush replied.

A little humility goes a long way. I'll probably never be a fan of this President, but a statement like this-- as I read it (I didn't see him say it) --makes me actually feel like he is more in control of the situation. I know that there are many in his camp that probably feel like he looks weak, but I would disagree.

I agree, Slim.

This might be a first for him, but I'll take it.

I'm suprised none of you libs have pointed out that at 38% what does he possibly have to lose  I think it's great that he's taken responsibility...perhaps his lib counterparts involved in this disaster (namely the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of LA) will admit they FIUBT too.....but I doubt it...that's not the lib way

We are not just Bush-bashers.

I had not heard this, but if this is what Bush said, then I have to give him credit that he said the exact correct thing.

Spot on George. Now get to work on it.

How can you say its not the lib way? The past 5 years have proven admitting mistakes is definitely not the NeoCon way.

He admits responsibility ONE time and now we're supposed to accept Bush as the great person who admits his mistakes? Its more likely he finally realized there was no way he could spin himself out of this one.
