Oh, wait...that's not right. Even before Tropical Storm Rita officially became a Tropical Storm LOCAL FLORIDA KEYS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS BEGAN MANDATORY EVACUATION OF TOURISTS AND VISITORS from the lower keys (as is there policy given the large amount of time it takes to evacuate the keys). Republican Gov Jeb BNush already declared a State of Emergency (something else that tends to happen in advance)...
Imagine that... local and state officials can get the job done with out whining to the federal government!

That's right. Right after Jeb bailed his son out of a Texas jail, he got right back to work. Here's his mug shot. Looks kinda swarthy to me. Maybe we should call Homeland Security.

And in case you have already forgotten, the Governor and Mayor declared a State of Emergency before Katrina hit also. Difference in the Keys is that there is not a huge preponderance of poor, elderly and frail folks without any method of transportation.

Like I've said, and the main reason I have to post this stuff, is that you libs can always find something to nit-pick. The thing you fail to realize is that you often end up contradicting yourselves (as for example pointing out that the keys is not New Orleans, but you would expect a strong government response in places, such as LA, which are also not New Orleans). :noway: And your last sentence proves my point on several levels, but the one I deem most important is that it underscores why local and state officials in Louisiana should have had their act together well before the storm hit.
But I think the collective cry from the lib quarters since Katrina has been that it is the federal governments job to keep your liberal a!!es out of high water.
And just because the Keys does not have the same poverty levels (not sure I agree with your assessment as to the overall number of senior citizens), surely does not mean that the local Florida Keys should not do what they have always done -- and that's move people out of potential harm's way well before the storm, is, well, sometimes even a storm.
And thanks for pointing out how well Jeb Bush can multi-task -- perhaps his counterpart in Louisiana could learn something :D

Duplicate entry. But here is a map to go with the next post:
The Green shaded areas are Qualified Census Tracts.

How are Florida officials moving people out? Are they not simply telling them to leave, or are they providing buses to get people out? Because in NO they told them to leave, but the poorest of the poor had no way out, and there is plenty of blame to go all around on that. But there is no comparison at all between an evacuation of the Keys, where I would venture most if not all denizens have methods of transportation, and a city with a population so poor.
Let me tell you what a Qualified Census Tract is. Let me start by saying that Monroe County, Florida, which encompasses the keys, has not a single QCT. Zero - 0 - none. A Qualified Census Tract is any census tract in which 50 percent or more of the households have an income which is less than 60 percent of area median gross income. $58,450 is the HUD median income for a family of 4 in Monroe County. Orleans Parish, with a median income of $51,000 for a family of 4, has, by contrast, 89 QCTs. 89 in that one tiny little tract of land. So many poor people with no way of getting anywhere due to their terrible poverty. So please, don't compare the evacuation of tourists and those in the middle and upper income bands, with what the people in those 89 QCTs faced.

First, glad you found time today to respond -- apparently Friday you were working (just another contradiction, I suppose :D ).
Second, all this data you are dumping (and it is a rather impressive data dump) is just more reason why the local and state officials in Louisiana should have had their act together :D or, are you saying, when it comes to poor folk, the federal government is responsible??????
And as for the Keys, that they choose to exercise prudence regardless of whether the people are poor or rich, black or white, residents or tourists (I did read in a news article that buses were deployed to move the tourists -- Key West airport being so small :] ) is perhaps a model from which others can learn -- even you, David :D
Arff, arff -- listen to the libs bark :]
