The publishing companies for Detroit rapper Eminem filed a lawsuit accusing five Internet companies of allowing customers to download his songs to their telephones and handheld computers.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit by Eight Mile Style LLC and Martin Affiliated LLC, said the companies have infringed on Eminem's copyrights.

The defendants are Cellus USA Inc. of Colorado, Matrixm Inc. of New York, Exinde Inc. of New York, Fanmobile LLC of Georgia and MyPhoneFiles LLC of New Jersey.

The suit said the Web sites have allowed customers to download -- for a fee -- such songs as "Forgot About Dre" and "The Real Slim Shady" since at least October 2004.

The suit, which alleges copyright infringement, unfair competition and unjust enrichment, seeks an injunction to halt the practice and profits derived from the sale of the songs.

Martin administers Eminem's copyrights. Eight Mile Style has exclusive rights throughout the world to use, publish and permit others to use his compositions.

Bruce Ellis, the chief executive officer of Cellus USA, said he couldn't comment on the suit because he hadn't seen it. Representatives of the other companies couldn't be reached.

No hearing date has been set in the case.
