Catholic School Principal To Students: Thou Shalt Not Blog
Students can be suspended for a lot of odd reasons these days — wearing "objectionable" T-shirts, cross-dressing for prom, planning elaborate senior pranks — but a principal at a Catholic high school in Sparta, New Jersey, has added another offense to the list: having a blog.
The Reverend Kieran McHugh stunned the 900 students of the private Pope John XXIII Regional High School at a recent assembly when he told them that, effective immediately, they would have to dismantle their personal pages on sites such as MySpace.com and Xanga.com and any other blogs, or face suspension.

suspending kids for wanting to express themselves and be social with other people and get to know people from different lifestyles is BS. let the kids do what they want, as long as they aren't doing anything truly horrible in school, why punish them?

I herd about this on TRL yesturday. I personally think its bull. They shouldn't be allowed to tell people what they can and cannot do outside of school. If its such a big deal in school then have a system to block the websites from the schools servers. This sounds like their messing with peoples rights and amendments.

My county is one of the only counties in the US that provides DELL laptop computers to every single student. They have a huge list of blocked sites, myspace, and xanga are to name a few. Along with game sites, and stuff. But we always find a way around the blocks with certain words, or using http://myspace.com, instead of "www.myspace.com" This right here is ridiculous though. They can't tell what their students can and cannot do outside school. This little rule wont be in effect for long b/c I'm sure people will complain the hell outta themselves! It's not like they're actually gonna search for all of their students on Myspace through the "Search" thing. There's no way for them to know if they've actually taken down their myspaces, or not. If anyone should be tellin these kids to take down their blogs, it should be the parents. This principal dude needs to be more worried about what's going on inside his school, and in it's classrooms, than be so concerned about what his students are doing at home.

---If a school gives you a laptop I understand why they block site like MySpace the laptop is for school use not personal use. Buy your own damn computer if you want to do whatever you want with it.
---Librarian should yell at kids for getting on sites like MySpace your at school, your there to learn and do educational stuff on a computer not catch up on your personal life thats what after school and weekends are for
--- I do think it is crazy that people are getting in troble for having one we do live in a free country we kids should be alot to have a blog if they want one.

that is stupid and ridiculous. i go to a catholic hs too and everyone has one. like someone said on here, you cant tell them wat they can do outside of school if it has nothing to do with anyone else like in a violent way. it be different if someone was like im gonna kill this kid or this girl is a slut and slept with this guy and what not, to a degree which you could hurt someone then its different and i can see y he would suspend. but if no one brought it up, then i say dont fix wat aint broke.

They got suspended cuz of WHAT was on their myspace, not for having one. It's like those kids a few months ago who got suspended because they were on sports teams where they vowed they wouldn't drink alcohol, and then they posted pictures of themselves drinking alcohol on their myspaces and someone ratted them out. If kids are that stupid, they have it coming.

Myspaces aren't the school's business. I don't see why the school is getting into it.
It's not like it's a school run site.
Why should they care what's on a students personal website?
Schools don't have the right to get into that.

Schools didn't check the myspaces. They were brought to their attention by other students. All it is being used as is proof that students are disobeying oaths (like the example I gave) and rules that jeopardize their participation in school activities and academics. It's simple, if you know you're not supposed to be doing something....don't post it on your myspace. Duh. I'm not "duhing" you Beth, just everyone's "theory" behind this. lmao :p
