I saw it too and I agree with you. It's worth seeing but it's not all that. I never read the book..or is it books? so I can't compared it to how close it followed the book except that I did here some other people at the theater making the comments that it did stay pretty close to the book.

If you haven't read the books you should just shut it.
I shall see it today and give you my expert review. Because I have read the books, therefore I am credible and knowable and expert-like.

A movie is made as a stand-alone piece of work, not as a companion piece to a book.

You're wrong. If someone makes a movie out of a book they expect it to be judged in comparison to the book, and they ought to do their best to do justice to the book. It is not a stand-alone piece of work because it is not an original piece of work.
And just to really prove you wrong I saw the movie. It was excellent. It wasn't Lord of the Rings caliber, but it was definitely a great movie and did the book SO much justice. And Lucy was way better than the miniseries girl. yeup
I do believe I have proven my point. Thank you and goodnight.

Many people see a movie without reading the book. The book is the basis for the movie, however the movie must be able to stand alone or the studio is wasting money making the movie.
You haven't proven me wrong, you have proven yourself to be naive about the nature of the movie business.

Sure it needs to stand alone as far as who can watch it, but it still isn't a stand-alone piece of work - there is a difference. It's inevitably going to be compared with the book. If people who haven't read it can't enjoy it whatsoever then it's a bad movie. But that doesn't mean that it's made in a vacuum and how it compares to the book, or how it presents the book is irrelevent. And if you're going to make a movie out of a book, it better do justice to the book or it should be burned.
I have proven you wrong. It was easy, because I know everything there is to know. You're just too naive to realize it. :greyno:

Saw Memoirs of a Geisha last night. It was faithful to the book, but could have been better if it hadn't been so close.
Sometimes a movie benefits from not following the book. Forrest Gump is a crappy book, but the movie is okay.
