Madonna:
"She doesn't want to live off camera, much less talk" declared Warren Beatty when he was Madonna's beau. Sure enough, by dint of blonde ambition, a pink bustier and 20 years of gossamer dance tunes, Madonna Louise Ciccone became the biggest, nerviest Pop star of all time. Never out of the public view for long, her ascent from Rochester Hills, Michigan, dance student to the woman with the most #1 hits in History was "as forceful and well-organized as D-Day," TIME once noted. Her early personas-ragamuffin Boy Toy and cooly seductive Material Girl-spawned young copycats: "Madonna wannabes." Meanwhile the videos that showcased her talents invariably launched controversy, pulling sexual, racial and social boundaries with nudity, religous imagery and touches of S&M. Impossible to ignore, unapologetically in control, she had become, said The New York Times, "a secular goddess." Desptie numerous tries, big-screen success largely eluded the MTV Queen until her Golden Globe winning performance as Eva Peron in Evita. After becoming the Maternal Girl in 1997 with the birth of daughter Lourdes (by personal trainer Carlos Leon), Madonna defined working motherhood in her own terms. She released the critical success Ray of Light, then met future husband, British directer Guy Ritchie, with whom she now shares son Rocco, 2. Still as sure of herself as ever, "I'm not going to get caught up in thinking you have to stay eternally young and perfect," Madonna said on the eve of her latest album, American Life. "I am what I am." An American original.

Tina Turner:
What's age got to do with it? Judging by the way sexy soul singer Tina Turner shimmied on stage in her trademark 4-inch heels for over 50 years, not a heck of a lot. "She stands for strength and reslience and beauty," said close friend Oprah Winfrey. "She reminds us of what we can do and what we can achieve." Turner's tale is well-known thanks to the hit 1993 film What's Love Got To Do With It. There was the hardscrabble childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee. The tumultuous years as Mrs. Ike Turner, when the duo enjoyed hits like "Proud Mary" -but she indured Ike's beatings and infidelity. Finally, there was the 1976 decision to get out of her marriage that left her in debt and living on food stamps. Turner's luck turned on a dime with 1984's Private Dancer, which produced a slew of #1 hits. Six Grammy's followed and a seven figure deal to strut her famous legs in Hanes hosiery. When Turner, at 60, decided to hang up her heels to spend more time with her family at her homes in France and Switzerland, she staged one last roll licking farewell tour. It was a massive success, breaking attendance records worldwide. "What a way to go," she marveled. "I can step down and say 'I did it, I enjoyed it and I went out the right way."
Mariah Carey:
She once compared her life to a fairy tale. "It's so unbelievable!" said Mariah Carey on her rise to fame, which climaxed with a spectacular 1993 wedding to Tommy Mottola, the record exec who discovered her. "I mean, it really is like Cinderella!" Carey modeled the nuptials on the Charles-Diana extravanaza, but the marriage fizzled four years later. With her five-octave range and rampant sex appeal, her cometlike career roared on, with Carey's worldwide album sales topping 200 million units. Her fortune turned in 2001, when her debut film, Glitter, and it's soundtrack bombed. Then, after a hospital stay to recover from what her rep called "an emotional and physical breakdown," her record company opted to buy her out of a five-album contract for the send off price of $28 million. In 2003 Carey bounced back on a new label with Charmbracelet. "She's a trouper, to say the least," said her "Heartbreaker" video director Brett Ratner. "When you're with Mariah, it's like, 'Jump on and go for the ride.'" Just be sure to fasten your seatbelt.
