Will Bonds break the home run record?

It'll be a sad day in baseball, but he will definitely pass Ruth for number 2. I think he needs 48 this season to break the record, and I don't think he'll do it.

I'm a fan of the Giants, and I like when the guys have a good season individually, so I wish him and everryone else the bast of uck this year. I hope you're right. I think he is maybe 6 home runs(at least in the beginning of the season) from Ruth. He is the only player that I can think of who hits more home runs as they're getting older than they do when they're younger.

Coming into yesterday's game, he hadn't hit one home run yet. If he hits very few home runs this year(a year where he's probably being tested very frequently), I think that could easily be a sign that he was using some form of drug to enhance his performance.

*Bonds can cry and moan all he wants about his treatment but the fact remains you don’t average 30-40 homeruns your entire career, (AS AN MVP CALIBER PLAYER NO LESS) then enter your late 30’s and kick up your production about 60%. Every other player in history starts to lose batspeed and visual acuity in his late 30’s, but not Barry. I can tell a lot of people don't like him. That can explain why he's booed on the road so often.

My father bought a newspaper that was comparing Ruth and Bonds. Other than than the home runs, there's nothing that can really compare the two. Bonds will make the Hall of Fame(unless he is caught using some kind of illegal drug), but he is certainly not in the same league as Ruth, Mays, or Cobb. They also said that Ruth was a womanizer and an alcoholic. I thought he was a better role model than that.

I don't really feel too bad for him. I'm assuming he's being watched this year and he's probably not taking any drugs. I don't think he has hit one home run yet, so, if it was only because of the advantages he had that he hit so many, I think he deserves the kind of treatment he is receiving.

i used to love McGwire..the home run chase was fun to watch...but now i cant stand him....i honestly think that if McGwire was still playing today he would get a lot of boos...would he get as many as Bonds? no...but i think a lot of that is because everyone that has a brain knows that bonds has used roids and has a shot at breaking the biggest record in american sports...i think that if McGwire was on the verge of breaking the same record and people know what they know now about him, then he would be getting the same treatment as bonds is now.

Let's not forget where McGwire began his career. And if you wanted to speculate more, how about the fact he got out as soon as the questions started coming up. He had a number of years left if he wanted them... Most would have tried a few more years, and those who did get deserved crap: Palmiero, Sosa. McGwire is the same.

Yet we only target Bonds at this point. 'Cause he's the only one still there challenging records?

An interesting thing I noticed last night at Chase: Bonds was the only Giant to applaud Gonzalez when Luis hit double #500. To become one of 21 players with 300 HRs and 500 doubles, and the only active player besides Bonds at that plateau.

He has missed several games already, so I really can't see him reaching Aaron's record at this point. He's maybe 3 home runs from Ruth now, so that looks to be inevitable. He has said that he will probably retire after this season, no matter where he is on the list. I have a hard time believing that though.

It's a real shame that he has tied Ruth. The media rarely mentions this, but he has needed more than 800 more at-bats than Ruth did to tie him. That would make Ruth the better home run hitter.

I just knew this would happen. Bonds was quoted as saying that he would probably retire after this season no matter where he is in home runs. ACtually, quite the opposite. The one Interleague weekend was up something like four-percent attendance-wise so far this year, and at the time of that release, they also said attendance in general was up.

I was referring to TV ratings;not attendance. They've been slipping pretty much every year lately.

So have sports on TV in general... Thanks partially to the Dish, people can now watch whatever game they want, and that doesn't show in the ratings.

I had heard that Bonds plans on being a designated hitter in the AL next year just so he can break the record. Is there any truth to that?

The report surfaced about a month ago. He hasn't said anything as far as I know, but his agent suggested it.

He had 12 home runs at the break. I think it's time for him to retire. He's more of a nuisance(sp?) to his team at this point.

I guess Bonds hit two home runs yesterday, but I'm amazed at how quiet he has been lately. My guess is that he'll sign with the Yankees next season to play DH but still won't even break the record.
