LONDON - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said Monday on TV here.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.

"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said....

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

If she kills off Harry, whatever is next definitely won't be as big, 'cause of all the saps who will say how betrayed they felt.

If she already has written the final chapter, it leads me to believe Harry will live. But we'll wait and see (mind you, I wouldn't feel betrayed if he did die).

When she says main characters, who do you think that includes? Are Harry, Hermione and Ron the only main characters, kind of how Kirk, Spock and McCoy were the only main characters really in Classic Trek? How far does that circle go? Does that include Hagrid, the other Weasleys, or even Snape? I have a sneaky suspicion Longbottom gets it, but again, does he count as a main character (say nothing about Dumbledore, if he's still alive).

The way she responded, I presume she's only talking about good guy main characters and not the likes of Voldy or the Malfoys.

Dave, were you the one who suggested that Harry's scar might be a horcrux? I think that's entirely logical, and if so, he would almost have to die in order to defeat Voldemort.

I even mentioned that to a friend who is a Potter fanatic, and it had never occurred to her, but she also thought it made sense.

Guilty as charged, although I believe Chad said he'd thought of it too.

He'd have to die only presuming that Voldemort is defeated. Can you imagine the uproar if evil triumphs?

What if she leaves it without all the loose ends wrapped up?

Considering her apparent distaste for ghost writers in the quote above, I don't think we have to worry too much about that.

There was another recent interview where she also revealed a few more details.

Can't wait for the last book ..

I can't wait for this book to come out. I think in a way it would be fitting for Harry to die.

I always thought she would kill him so that there was no way he could come back, ie pressure to write more books later on, closure and all that. I hope she doesn't but the way I can see him dying like suggested above is defeating Voldermort. I think there would be a huge uproar if evil won on the day! Good god I can see parents writing in at lightning speed!
